Notwithstanding the fact that the ADVERTISER is frequently of fered tempting prices to publish whiskey advertisements, we con-! tinue to say NO to all of them, and feel that we lose nothing by refusing. It has been rumored for some time that there were gross irregu larities i ri the finances of Saluda county. Supervisor Padgett is out- in a card asking that a thorough investigation be made, so as to prove the truth or falsity of Buch rumors. The wave of anti-dispensary agitation has not yet reached Aiken, but that county will have to. hold an election any way this fall to choose.a successor to Hou. L. B. Etheredge, member of the House of Representatives from Aiken comity, who resigned re cently. Let us hope thattherp will not be a repetition of last year's disgraceful' conduct in the Horss Creek Valley. In the northern cities many persons are now prostrated by the heat, deaths being reported every day. In the south, we mean the extreme south, that dread disease, yellow fever, is .terrifying the peo pie. After all the most favored section in all the world is -about midway between. New York and New Orleans. It only restrains-does not prohibit. So with prohibition. It restrains or reduces the evil-does not pro hibit absolutely. See the point ? It is bad enough for a farmer, who ha sstruggled hard lo make a crop of cotton, to suffer loss in the price fluctuations at the hands of speculators, but in finitely worse when the entire pro ceeds of ? year's work are deliber ately stolen by parties in whom confidence was reposed. A few more ugly failures like the one above alluded to will cause far mers to be afraid to ship cotton to any factor. Therefore, the honest commission merchants, for their own sake?, should also be interested in the punishment of the dishonest ones. Doing Tlieir Own Thinking. The dispensary is nothing new to our people. They have seen ils operations for twelve years, and, having made up their minds pro or con, no amount of argu ment from politicians will change them. The citizens of this coun ty,are more intelligent, better io-j formed upon public questions now than they were a decade ago and are doing their own thinking, and will do their own voting. For thie reason we confidently believe that every individual who attends the mass meeting on Saturday next, ;whelher ho be for or against the dispensary, will have thp same views and convictions. | upon this very important ques tion after the meeting as he did before. "We do not believe that any question involving as much as this questiou does to our people, T should be passed on without a fall j ' and free discussion. We believe i that euch elector will-ba better qualified to cast his ballot for 'ht? best interest of his community himself aud his State after hear ing such a discussion on this Sub ject. "For the purpose of having such a discussion we hereby call a mass meeting to be held at Edgefield Court House on Saturday, August 5, 1905, and request Senator B..R. Tillman, the Hon. J. C. Sheppard, the Hon. W. J.Talbert, all of oui representatives from this county in the Geueral Assembly, and any other person who feels disposed to participate in said discussion, to be present and address the peuple on the question at issue." This call bas been signed by about three hundred citizens, whose names we rcgiet our in ability to publish. A vast majori ty of ihe signers doubtless favor the dispensary, while some favor ed the public discussion aud affix ed their signatures but are op posed to the sale of liquor. The Farmers' Institute. On Tuesday a small but repre sentative body of farinas inet in the court house to hear the ex cellent addresses that were de lived, by the' professors from Clemson College. The meetiug was presided over by Mr. S. B. Mays who intro duced Prof. D. W. Daniel as the first speaker. This gentleman made one of the best addresses upon the hackneyed thorne, "Education", that we hav? eyer listened to. Would that every lath( r and mother in the county could have heard it. The eloquent words of Prof. Daniel would have caused them to firmly resolve to make even greater sacrifices to educate their Suns and daughters. The next speaker was Prof. C. L. Newman who discussed agri culture in a general way, besides answering very thorovg'ily and satisfactorily a number of practi cal questions from farmers in the audience. Prof. Newman lays stress upon deep plowing and thorough preparation, ah o upon rotating crops so nato continually build np instead of impoverish tl 8 landB. \ Dr. L. A. Much interest was manifested in the discussion of all the queries. All the speakers were at their besf. Dr. T. M. Bai ley, of Greenville, and Rev. ?V; I. Masters, of Greenwood, O * Sheppard, Esq.. and lioj^ffiiam Thurmond of Engeld were present- These virfting brethren took ?na^Oy^part iu discussion. JBailey preached the .[missionary sermon on Suuday. The same was listened to by one of ihe largest congregations that ever attended the Red Hill church Dr. Bailey was at his best aud after the dinner a good collec tion was taken for state missions. Your correspondent spent last week at Mt. Zion church with Rev. P. B. Lanham. There are many good people in Mt. Zion church and Brother Lanham is doing a good work among them. All of the people of the church and community are devoted to Mr. Lanham. Our town aud community twi s filled with delegated &nd visitors to the union meeting. Dr. Bailey, Rev. V. I. Masters, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Dobey and Misses May Bell aud Julia Strom visited at Rose Cottage during the union. Mr. V. B. Thomas sent us ;j. well developed and matured .col ton boll that was fully opened, so you see that soon the fleecy staple will be on the market. Mr. J. H. Bussey is building a new barn. Mr?. Annie Hammond who lost her house iu the spring by fire bas let a contract for a new house. Mr. Gus Edmunds has ?omi of the finest water melons that w have seen this year. The rain last Friday night .greatly refreshed all vegetation and our farmers are in goo 1 spir its. The chain gang is working our roadB now.
