We have observed that most preachers preach a great deal better than their congregations practice.-Ex. Tidings from all sections indi cate the prospect of a hay crop to be good in this county. A su preme effort is being made, how ever, to reduce the grass acreage not only twenty-five but one buu dred per cent. It is stated that the farmers, who compose fifty per cent of the country's population, only com mit two per cent of the crimep. This is prima facie evidence that it ?B easier to deal justly and mer cifully with men and to walk hum bly before God in the pure atmos phere of the country than in the congested cities. TJris-is a step in the right direc tion. No doubt these fraternities are good things in their places but certainly a college is not the place for them. They give rise to fac . tions and cliques that are contin ually warring against each other. Between the fraternity men and non-fraternity men there is con stant friction which mars that per fect accord and harmony that ehould obtain m every student body. Those politicians whos? wont has been to set their sails to catch the popular breeze are somewhat nonplused.. The sudden, yet certain, revulsion of sentiment concerning the Great Moral In stitution-which term now passes current as a synonym of the dis pensary-in many eections of the state has greatly troubled the ^waters of the political sea. The man who contemplates asking for the suffrage of the people twelve months hence stands, with knitted brow, perplexed with this ques tion : "Must I oppose or favor the dispensary"? During the past decade those who have aspired to office have not been confronted with this question, for there was but one course to pursue: that of vindicating the dispensary and boot-licking its officials, from Ih private in tho rear rank of the constabulary to the Grand Sachem, the chairman of the board of di rec tors. Hitherto, cursed has been he who dared oppose the sale of liquor by the state-henceforth doomed will be ho who dares favor it in mauy sections of the state. Well may the demagogue be put to confusion. JOHNSTON, Three infants have been placed in our Village Cemetery wilhiu the past week. Rev. L. A. Cooper, Mr. John P. Mrs. Denny reported a delightful time and gave an interesting talk on the Federation. Mrs. White was requested to postpone her report for the next meeting. Having had. an engagement for the afternoon she came in too late lo do the subject justice. Mrs. A. J. Smyley,"after a short .visit at the home of berdanghle;, has returned to her home near Rocky Creek. Peachep are bringing $2.25 per crate in Baltimore. The recent rainy spell is very unfavorable for those ripening early. The Readyville club has made application for a Farmers Insti tute to be held sonu limu during the Summer. Mr. and Mrs. Georg?, of-Augus la, are visiting the old home of the former. Accompanying them are two lovely child ran. Little Hallie White won tbe gold medal offered the. state by the Davis monument committee at Richmond, having received the majority of the votes from th* si'eofthe Davis buttons by thf. chapter of the Slate. The medal will be presented on the 3rd of June, which is Davis1 birthday. COLD SPRING. Be content to lead a simp'e life where God bas placed you. C- I. Prof. Bailey has a great school and the people of Edgefield county should stand by this school and support it with kind words, sympathy and with their sons and daughters. While at the commencement Prof. and Mrs. Bailey, Miss Liz zie Dobey .and Dr. Tompkins showed special kindness for which we feel very grateful. Now it has come to pass that two of the upper counties have voced out the dispensary and that at least two others will soon vote on the "dispensary or no dis pensary." Why not kEdgofield? Il seems to me that at our next pri mary election that the people of the county, should say whether we want or do not the dispensary. I for one believ? that if the ques tion of dispensary or no dispen sary was put before the people that the dispensary would be voted out two to one. Let's try it next year. What say you? Mrs. George Johnston, Mrs. James Boddie and children visi ted friends in Georgia last Satur day and Sunday. That paper that Mips Louise McKight, the popular teacher of Modcc, read before the associa tion of graduates was far above the average papers on such occa sions. It was highly enjoyed by all who heard it. Dr. T. M. Bailey, whom all South Carolina loves a*d honors, was at thf commencment. Dr. Bailey will be at ihe union meet ing here at Red Hill next month and will preach Missionary Ser mon. Mrs. Littlejohn has been real sick for several day6. We hope and pray for her speedy recovery. That banquet by the graduates of the S. C.-C. I. was one of the beet we ever attended. Wo shall always tbink tbat Col. Bailey ought to have licked Mir. Why Mr. Pat Buesey was not sick if still a wonder to some of us. Mrs. J. H. Bussey sent to Rose Cottage a nice basket of peachep. These peaches were well formed and fully ripe. We are also in debted to Mis3 Dollie T. Smith /and Miss Pattie Lanier fur a uice box of delicious cherrios. Miss Anna.McDaniel, of Faifa, visited Miss Bessie Holmes last Saturday and Sunday. Mr. 0.
