Bacon located on the square ih the town of Edgefield and known as the Chronicle build ing. This property was bought by Mr. Mark Toney for $2510 who, a r&w hours afterwards, sold it to Mr. W. L. Duuovant. This is a very desirable piece of property. The B'ore being in popular locali ty will always rent well. Althoi gh Mrs. W. Trapp McMauus hitched bis horse io the buggy and left it standing tu front of the house near the road. lu a short while he noticed that the buggy was missing, also his little two-year-old son. After making a search it was discovered that the little fellow hed in some svay gotten into the buggy and started the horseoff. A gentleman stopped ths horse and his little master, who was sitting in the, foot of the buggy, just before they roaohed town. The little fellow already has an ambition to be couuty treaeurer aud doubtless be was bound for the treasurer's office to ?eceive funds in his fa thers stead. Mr. IL C. Bailey, the editor of the Johnston News, made his first visit to Edgefield on Friday last and made many friends while mingling with the people of our town. Brother Bailey has ,always i>eeu accustomed to saud beds and a level country, consequently he marvelled greatlv at the muddy hills of Edgefield. He says that were he possessed of miilious of dollars he would not do the Carnegie act of fouudingi libraries, or the Ruckefeller act of j endowiug large uuiversi ies, but) would purchase small farms and send thousands of these families to live in the country. This would be genuine philanthropy. The congested portions of the large c'ties could be thus depopulated, the.'eby making good citizens of j millions of people who otherwise are born and reared iu an atmos pheie of crime. College Grounds Beautified Presi ent Bailey is constahtj improving and beautifying ti college building, campus ai premises generally. The latest im provement was the setting out la^t week of about forty choice young oaks in front of the college. Should they Jive these oaks will iu a few years greatly enhance the appear ance of the college grounds and will afford a deuw shade under, which the students can pass their leisure hours. The senior, juuio. and sophomore classes each plant ed a class tree. In the years to cume when the members of these classes visit their alma mater they cae point with pride to their class tree thats were planted with their own hands in 1905. Col. Bailey purposes sowing grass upon the campus which will make of it one of the most beautiful college properties in the stats. Beautifully, Brilliantly Lighted. Notwithstanding the unfortu nate little episode of Sunday evening last, which was the fault of the sexton and not of the gas plant, the newly installed acety lene gas plaut at our Brptist church works admirably. The two entrances and the entire building are now as brilliantly lighted as if the source of light were the uoonday sun. Two lights are also to be placed out in front of the church to dispel the darkness for some distance around. The faith ful old sexton being more familiar with long, short and common me tres than he is with gas meters shut off the supply of gas on Suu-| day evening last while the bene diction was being pronounced, cousequeutly the building and everybody in it were suddenly enveloped in darkness of-the most impenetrable kind. Some thought the gas generator had struck, but not so. The plant works with per fect satisfaction. Monday's Crowd Large. There was au unusually large orowd upon our streets on Monday last. Not since old Mother Edge fiidd settled off her two daughters, Saluda and Greenwood counties, have we seen so rnauy people here. Besides being the first Monday and the first day of court, which caused roany to coma on business, it is a season of the year when people who really have no busi ness here like to congregate at the county-seat. Some tn swap horses, others to "swap lies" and, sad to say, still others, a few, to drink booze. And why should they not j come? If there ie nothing doing J at home come to Edgefield on alli such public occasions, or at any other time, and meet and mingle with friends from far-?way por-1 tious of the county. The residents ? of our town always welcome all who will come, especially wheu ?he deportment ie good. And there is about as little rowdiness upon tho streets of Edgefield at any and all times as upon the streets of other dispensary towns in the state.
