colored, that waB in jail escaped on
Tuesday morning about nine
o'clock. It ?B the belief of thd jail

bad keys. The negro gained bis
liberty but lost a nice Christmas
dinner, for the ladies bad arranged
to send dinner to the prisoners.
There has been great rejoicing
in Edgefield over the return of
two of the community's beloved
young people. After an absence
of three mouths at the Brenau
conservatory of music, located at
Gainesville, Ga. Misses Fannie.
Sheppard and Sallie Parker reach
ed home on Saturday to spend
their holiday vacation. They re
sume their course rrmsicon the
3rd of January.
Congress having adjourned
for the holidays Senator Tillman
and Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Tillman,
Jr., have arrived at Trenton to
speud Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. B.
R. Tillman, Jr., will spend the
time at the home of Senator Till
man iuutead of at "Edgewood".
Early in January they will roturn

final adjournment of congress,
which will be in the early spring.
On Sunday evening next the
regular monthly union Bervice
will be held in our Methodist
church. The sermon will be preach
ed by Rev. C. E. Burts. These
meetings are always very largely
attended by members of all the
churches and by many who are
not members of any church. The
building, being always well heat-]
ed, will be-very comfortable and
there is no good reason, even
should the weather be somewhat
inclement, why every seat in the
church should not bo taken.

The season for "moving kitchen

daily, large wagons piled high
with household effects. New plans
and uow contracts have caused
some, especially colored people,
to change their base of operations.
Doubtless it would be .better for

with their lot for the past year
aud who fancy that they can bet
ter their condition to "endure the
ills they have rather than fly to
those they know not off"
The missionory society of our
Baptist church, like those of the
other churches of our town, baB
steadily grown iu numbers, in
zeal, in power, in usefulness, and
much lasting good is bei?g accom
plished by these consecrated
Chriatiau women. They haye juat
seut a barrel of sundry articles of
clothing to Miss Maria Jones,a
statp missionary located in Colum
bia, to be distributed according
to their needs among the poor
in the mill villages of the capital
city. The barrel is estimated to
be worth $25 which is probably
but half of its real value.
Dr. James Byrd and Dr. James
Dobey have returned from the
Atlanta Dental collage to be with
the homefolks during the holidays.
Notwithstanding the very hard
work that Dr. Byrd bas been doing
at college, he has gained consider
ably in avoidupois, looking as
fresh and bright as a brand new
dollar. We have not yet laid ey^s
upon our esteemed young friend,
Dr. Dobey. Rumor has it that
Cupid directed him to Parksville
before coming to Edgefield-and
we are inclined to believe that
ere is much truth in it.
In the new county election those

at Liberty Hill precinct, and those

son of Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Daniel,
who graduated with honore from
Furman university last summer,
and began the study of law im
