Tho Public Roads.
Not many months ago the roads
of Edgefietd county were the
worst, thu very worst, in the state.
We assert, without fear of contra
diction, that thore is not now a
county irf the state, considering
character of the soil" and amount
of money expended, that has bet
ter highways. Of cou.se the hills
that were here "in the beginning"
are here still and will he till the
end'of time, but they are smoothe
and firm instead of being rough,
rocky and rutty as they formerly
were. There is no doubt about the
fact that the road machine! and
convict syst< m-cost what they
may-are a God-send to the coun
try. Barring the hills, Edgefield
will, in five more years, have as
good public roads as can be had
in auy all-clay section. All that is
needed how is a larger force, which
would enable the Supervisor to
go-over the hundreds of miles of
roads oftener, thereby preventing
any of them from getting very bad.
The Two Jacks.
If for any reason you should
employ a man as cook be sure to

bears the. name of Jack. There

when it comes to preparing food

Jack Griffie and Jack Whatley.
And splendid all-round fellows

citizens. Though they grew tired,
they never grew weary in watching
over the pit throughout the. long i
tedious hours of the night and
day as the meat was cookiug. Sup
plementing the juicy meats cook- j
ed by these two Jacks(not Jacks .
of-all-trades and good al none) j
were the delightful sweet-meats 1

of the community. Aa we stood,
with the hundreds of others, aud |
enjoyed this f< sst of goods things. |
we had but one regret and that ,
was to see the good people of ?
Gilgal cheated, literally cheated. |
They only charged the small sum j
of 35 ceuts for dinner ana we
know positively that one dollar's
worth was eaten by everbody ex- i
cept some of ihe candidates who I
ate five dollars' worth. But in I
spite-of their being dreadfully i
cheated they realized about $103 .
for their church.
Teachers Being Taught.
The county, superintendent of ,
education and the county board .
of education have for some weeks
been doing all in their power to
create a greater . interest in the
summer school among the teach- ?

have not been in vain, for twenty <
eight names (nearly twice the at- ?
tendance of former years) are uow i
enrolled and others are yet to
come.
No mistake was made in tbe
selection of instructors, for Prof. '
P. P. Bethea and Prof. G. F. Long 1
are teachers of .large experience
aud acknowledged ability. This '
coming together of the teachers
underthe tutelage of these gen
tlemen is certain to promota the
cause of education in our county.

Mr. Eugene Froeland died at
his hornett Plum Brauch on Mon
day. Mr. John B. Lanier died
in Columbia on Sunday and was
buried at Red Hill on Tuosday.

Mr. Joe S. Addison, a very
prosperous farmer, who resides
near Chappell's, spent Saturday
and Sunday in our town with bis
mother Mrs. V. C. Addison. Mr.
Addison was accompanied by two
pretty little daughters, Weeta and
Nannie, the former of whom will
remain with her grandmother for
a fortnight.

The inmates of the county
home are "in clover''. Through
the good management of the
steward, Mr. J. R. Scurry, I be
garden yields an abundant supply
of fresh vegetables, the fields fur
nish watermelons, cauteloup?s
and roasting ears, while the
orchards afford luscious peaches.
Mr. Scurry brought us some of
the peaches on Monday last. They
were the largest and most beauti
ful Elberta peaches that we have
aver seen. Mr. Scurry pulled.one
a, few days ago that weighed 10
Dunces. That's hard to btat.
Mr. Jack Griffis, accompanied
byJDr. J. T. Pattison and Mr. W.
W\Medlock, carried his rou, Ful
ler, to Augusta on Saturday last
to have his eye treated by Dr.
Tinsley, the noted specialist. Mr.
Griffis, was apprehensive that a
jr.taract was forming over his
sou's eye but after a thorough
