WEDNESDAY, AUG. 10,1904. wit " 1 ., - The editor of the Advertiser at tended the initial meetings of the county campaign and took notes in detail of all the speeches ex p?cting to" reproduce each ODO at some length, but finds it impossi ble to compass, in a limited space, two' county meetings and a Btate campaign meeting (34 speeches in all). Therefore, contrary to our wishes and purpose, we can only report the county meetiugB briefly and in a general way, omitting, entirely an account of the state campaign meeting that was held at Edgefield on Monday. COUNTY CAMPAIGN. The tw^Liater gentl&mei referred with pardonable prid? t< their Bervice and records as law makers, and the) former, being i political debutant, stated that hi had no public record but if electee ? tb the state senate would make om of which he and his constituency would be proud. The aspirants for legislativ? honors, Hon. J. W. DeVore, S. M Smith, Esq., Mr. J. B. Strother Mi. A. G. Broadwater, B. E. Nich sbn, Esq., and Mr, S. T. Williams addressed the audience in tnt order named. Mr. DeVore ga vt an account of his stewardship and with force and ability pressed hit claims for re-election, and the other gentlemen gave, in an ex ceedingly creditable manner, theil views upon certain issues that are being discussed generally over the state. So nearly identical are the plat forms and so nearly do the views o?? all tho candidates coincide (?andidates for Senate and House) that we do not give their positions separately upon the several ques tions. All agree that more money should be appropriated for the common, schools in which the children of the masses can receive ah English education. This is right but we deplore the fact that some of the candidates (all of whose names'we do not remember) while not avowedly antagonistic to the state colleges are disposed to somewhat prejudice the minds of people against them. South Carolina should do more for the common schools but not less for hor colleges, which do honor to her name and should be the pride of her people. All favor increased pensions for the Confederate veterans, also . agree that the law should be amended so there would be a more equitable distribution of the pen sion fund3. All advocate an amendment to the constitution giving the magis trates greater jurisdiction, there by reducing very materially the court expenses. All ba\e espoused the cause of good roads, expressing the belief that the present system will in a few years accomplish the desired results.- Not one declared himself in^favor of taxation for road pur poses. Were it left to the law makers from Edgefield the state farms would be dumped into the Cou garee river, if no purchaser could H. found, and the convicts put upon the public highways. So mote it be. We wish that all of these gentlemen-the trio for the Senate and the sextette for the House-could be elected. And these selfsame gentlemen should b? sent en masse to Colum 3?a to kill the amendment tu the Brice bili (which taxes a county Por ibo privilege of voting out a dispensary) for they all declare it to be most iniquitous. While it is now up to the voters to decid? whether we shall have bi-enniat sessions' of the legisla ture or not, all. of the ' candidates exprepsed themselves in favor of the change, except. Mr. Strother and Mr. DeVore. The latter voted to submit it to the people but, personally, questions the wisdom of bi-ennial sessions. The orators of the day were iu excellent spiritB an.d must have experienced an inward "tickle as they pictured themselves address ing the President, of the Senate or Speaker of the House instead of an Edgefield audience. The only candidate for solicitor at Gilgal was Geo. Bell Timmer m?n, Enq., who made a. short but very appropriate speech. At Rei Hill letters were read from Capt. N. G Evans andS. McG.Simkins expressing regrets on account of their enforced absence. The earae^caudidates for senate aud House (except Mr. Broad water, who was at the encamp ment iu Columbia) who address ed the audience at Gilgal spoke at Red Hill, delivering about the same speeches. Mr. C. E. Quarles presided over the Red Hill meet ing with becoming dignity. It was mutually agreed by ihe candidates for Superintendent of Education, Messrs. W. A. Byrd aud W. D. Hollaud, that they would not speak at Gilgal or Trent?u,the respective homes of these gentlemen, but both made appropriate speeches at Red Hill. Cold Spring: DEAR ADVERTISER: On last Friday as the heavy morning coluds began to break away and the sun began to shine, the peo ple began to pour in at Red Hill to attend the great barbecue and hear the candidates speak. There were about three hundred present All were in a good humor anc seemed to want to make each olhei have a good time. The candidatef for the state senate, legislature aud superintendent of education made speeches. The candidates for .hf senate and legislature spoke ot tho issues of the day. I believt they all declared themselves ii favor of the Brice bill. They al spoke of trusts, tariff, income tax and educa'ion. They all dil well, and were well received b the people who heard them. We have just heard of the deat of Mr. Eugene Freeland of Plur Branch. Mr. Freel?nd was a goo man and will be missed in hi church and commuuity. So Gus is now in the Edgefield jail waiting his trial in the No vember court for assault and bat tery with intent to kill. Prof. W. D. Holland spent the night at Rose Cottage last Thurs day night.
