The marriage of Mr. Walter Harris and Miss Alice Lyon on Sunday morning last at the Pres byterian manse, by Rev. T. P. Burgess, was a great surprise to their Edgefield friends. The groom is one of the most prosperous and progressive young farmers of this county and the bride is the beauti ful and accomplished daughter of Mr. M. D. Lyon. The Advertiser joins the many friends of these happy young people in wishing them a long life of unalloyed bliss. Off For thc Encampment. To-day the Edgefield Huif.ars aud the Edgefield Light Dragoons under the command of Capt. N. G. Evans and Capt. John R. Blocker, respectively, will leave tor Columbia where they will en camp for one week. The companies will be represented by about fiftv men each. These annual encamp ments arfcrd a splendid outing for the soldier boys.' Now that the crops have all been laid by a change of turroundings and a break in the routine of daily life will be relished by every one of the 100 men- The boys will have todo some real, work while in camp but it will not be like facing the bullets. \ Enthusiastic Meeting. ?The county medical association held a very enthusiastic meeting on Monday last. The following were iu attendance: Doctors J. M. Rushton, J. G. Edwards, J. H. Carmichael, J. H. Self, D. A. J. Bell and F. W. P. Butler. The names of Doctors J. G. Tompkins and R. A. Marsh were enrolled as members. A committee on.etbics, with Dr. Butler as chairman, and a committee on business, with Dr. Bell as chairman, were appointed. At the next regular meeting on on the 12th of October a paper un "Continued Fevers'' will be read by Dr. J. M. Rushton, and one on "Epidemic Diseases" will hi read by Dr. F. W. P. Butler. After the reading by these papers the topics will be generally discussed. DoiDgs of the Court. The August term of court, with Hon. R. C. Watte presiding judge, will be unprecedentedly short. But for one case the docket would have been cleared in one day. All of the officials being prompt ly in their places the court ma chinery was set in motion and business disposed of with dispatch. The grand jury having completed all business made its presentment aud was dismissed Tuesday morn ing. The followiug cases were dis posed of : Geo. LaGrone, burglary and lar -czuy ; pieaueu guilty, sentenced to 5 years on chain gang. Clarisa Mickers and West Lind say, assault and battery with in tent to kill. The former guilty, latter acquitted. Johu Manee, burglary aud lar ceny ; pleaded guilty, two years on chain gaug. Francis Dunbar, violating dis pensary law, guilty. Isaiah Collier, carrying conceal ed weapon and disturbing religious worship. Defendant on bond, case continued. At this writing on Tuesday th? court is ougaged in the trial of Billy Williams for killing Mary Ann Jones iu the town of Edge field several months ago. The stale is represented by Solicitor Thurmond and the defendant bv N. G. Evans, Esq., and S. M. Smith, Esq. When this case is disposed of the docket will be cleared and Mrs. Kate Black spent s? days in Augusta last week. Mr. Orlando Sheppard, Jr been spending several days i the parental roof. Capt. There was a large, good-natured orderly crowd in town on Monday, the first day of court. Some feast ed on the juice of watermelons while others cooled (?) themselves with corn and rye juice. He will be absent from his office till Monday the 22nd inst. The Summer School opened yes terday with a goodly humber., of, teachers in attendance. We re gret our inability to give a full ac count of the opening in this issue. We shall write at length of the Summer School next week. Mr. Jamos B. Kenuerly bas given up bis position as ' traveling salesman for a large shoe manu facturer and has resumed his posi tion as salesman for Messrs. Dorn & Mims. Poteat, the president of iFurman university, who is making a tour of the state in the interest cf Chris!iau education attended tho union meeting at Johnston on Sunday morning and preached iu our Baptist church oe Suuday evening. Lott for publication The fact that it dops not appear this week is due to the crowded condition of our columns and is not the fault of the'above named gentlemen.. Those who have at tended these annual functions for years report the largest crowd ever seen on such an occasion. All who have expressed themselves in our bearing have been loud in the praises of Capt. Evans and his men. It was iu every sense a suc cess. Nothing marred ;he pleas ure of the occasion. Au exchange says a farmer asked a leading lawyer to bring suit against a man who owea him $50. The lawyer said: "What's the use? It will cost you more than $50 to win the case. This may seem strange advice ; but my friend, an honest lawyer is the noblest work of God". Thp farmor learned next day that the lawyer' was retained by the man he wan ted to sue. He went back lo his plodding with the remark. "Well, I guess! An honest lawyer may be the noblest work of God ; I know he's the scarcest".
