Death of au Only Son. It was singularly coincident thatasthesuD sank beneath the western horizon on Friday last the light of the life of Mr. Walter B. Sheppard, only son of Mrs. Ida F. Sheppard, became extinct aud his poul was wafted to the spirit land. For several weeks he had struggled bravely for the mastery over the 'Iread disease that had seized upon him with a death-like grip, but that he should be spared was not in accord with the planp of the All-wise Ruler of the universe, who maketh all things woree to gether for the good of those who love and serve bim. In response to the call of Coun ty Chairman. The action of EdgefieM's committee stands out in marked contrast with that of I other like committees in the s'ate. While some have seemingly en deavored to make the campaign asexpeneive as poss.ble to the] candidates our committee has made the burden very light, ex ceedingly light. The following are the assessments that must be paid by candidates when they file their] pledges: Clerk of Court, $2.50; Sheriff,, $2.50; Auditor, $2.50; Treasurer, $2.50; Superintendent] o/Education, $1.25; State Senate $1.25; House of Representatives, $1.25; Supervisor, $1.25; Master, $1.00; County Commissioners, 501 cents ; Supervisor of Registration, 50 cen ts ; 'Coroner, 50 cen ts. Can-1 didates for magistrate will not ba required to pay any assessment. Half of the assessment paid by each defeated candidate will be returned to him. There'will be seven county cam paign meetings, as follows: Gilgal, Wednesday, .August 3rd. Red Hill, Friday,* .* 5th. Parksville, tuesday " 9th Ropers. Friday, " 12th Trenton, Monday, 14 15th Johnston, Tuesday, .? 16th Center Springs, Thur. " 18th The usual block ticket was adopted and every other form ?of ticket will be ruled out. Pledges must be-filed with ard assessments paid to the chairman, Hon. Thos. H. Rainsford, or the treasurer, Mr. W. W. Adams, by noon of August 3rd, the date set for the official opening of the campaign, Several members of the commit tee: favored payiug the primary election managers but as thai would make the campaign assess ment very high it was voted dov;u. The comniittxe will request the commissioners of election to ap point the managers of the prima ry as managers of general elec tion. In this way they will receive some compensation for services rendered. Bell who is honored and highly esteemed wherever he is known announces his candida cy for re-election as magistrate of the sixth district. The people of Collins township cannot find a man who will sarve them more faithfully"or conscientiously than will Luther Bell. Dobey in the manage ment of hiB large lumber interests in Aikeu, mad? a short business trip to Edgefield on Friday last. Mr. Dobey has been signally suc cessful in everything that he has undertaken in his adopted home. Some of the young people of our town will go dowu to trip the light fautastic aud to partake of the feast of good things that are always prepared in such great abundance. Mr. Candidate, you must be on the ground early and late to-morrow, swioging-corners all with the old and }ouug. A great number of people in our county will watch with very keen interest the careers of two very bright young men of Saluda county, Messrs. William L. and John M. Daniel, sons of Dr. John Daniel. The former is acandidate for the legislature from Saluda couuty and the latter, who recent ly graduated with honors from Furman university, has gone to Greenville to read law under Mes srs, Cothran & Dean. May success crown the efforts of both of these gifted young men who formerly were within the borders of our own county. In this issue of the Advertiser will be found the announcement of Mr. S. T. Williams as a candi date for the House of Representa tives. This gentleman, who is a very successful merchant and far mer of the Pleasant Lane section, is well known and has friends in every section of the county. He is a Belf-made mau who has man aged his private interests with splendid ability aud if eleoted will do his utmost to give the people an honest, straightforward and business-like administration. This announcement should have appeared last week beek but for some reason it was omitted, Before the week oloses a saw mill, the real thing, will be loca ted and iu actual' operation with in the corporate limits of the town of Edgefiild. This probably has not oocurred before since th? pri meval forest hereabouts was cut and will probably never occur again, for nearly ali of the timber for miles around has been cut. Messrs. C. M. Williams and W. P. Bruusou haye moved their mill down and will saw aboutoue hun dred thousand feet of lumber for Mr. J, Li. Mr. Smith needs no introduction at our bands. He has been au active member of |the Edgefield bar for about ten years and has met with the people of everv sec tion of <he county. Mr. Smith ?B a ready upeaker and will announce his platform from the hustiugs". He never hesitates to take a stand upon the issues of the day and boldly- proclaims his views,- for which he is highty commended. The popular deputy sheriff, Mr. W. G. OuztB, went to Batesburg on Friday last and brought one Clifford Abney to Edgefield and placed him behind the bars to await trial for breaking contract. Such offences should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. It means much to a farmer to have a hand break a contract right in the midst of the busy season. Af 1er fertilizers have been bought, the crop planted aud par tially worked, a heavy ios3is sue tained when it is abandoued. The maximum puuiphmeut allowed under the law would put a stop to . such violations. The excursion which some of the colored people conducted to Savannah ou Thursday last proved to be very unprofitable. Instead of netting a barrel of money from the venture, as was anticipated, the promoters have paid about $250 for their experience. This utter failure from a financial standpoint will, it is to be hoped put a stop to these jaunts that are demoralizing to all who go on them and to the labor especially at this 'very busy season. Such excursions not only take hundreds of dollars ftom this community that should remain but many a plow, hoe, otc, lies unused that is needed in the farm. If excursions are ruu a season io which no work needs to be done should be chosen for t-.am. This would be better fru the promoters and forthe interests at home. .
