The fortuuate con testant will be given a four years' college course, in one of the beet institutions of learning in the south, absolutely without cost. Every young man in the county between the ages of 15 and 19 years can compete for the scholar ship. A FRIEND. JOHNSTON. Our oil mill has sold all meal ground duriug the past season. Mrs. James White gave The Baud of Hope, a wagon ride on Saturday last. The little folks seemed to enjoy themselves very much as the wagon full rattled down the road. Mrs J. W. Brown visited rela tives in Augusta last week, on her return was accompanied by petite Ruth HarriB. The new Ceutury club held its last meeting at the residence of Mrs. James White. A full attend ance testified to the unwavering in terest in tbe work. The reports from the Federation were quite iuteretstiug. Mrs. James White, as reporter lor lhe Augusta papers, aud Mrs. Wm. Touey, who re presented the ljcal club, both gave tull reports that proved both interesting and instructive. Much interest is manifested in CivicB, Domestic science, Arts and Crafts etc. During thu uext three months the new books will be enjoyed, and the children will be organized in to bauds to aid in helping to keep our side walks and streets neater. An unusually [good -musical pro gram "had been prepared-A duet by Mrs. White and.Mrs. Latimer, also a vocal solo by t/.ie latter and an instrumental duet by Mrs. Toney and Mrs. White. Af'er the meeting all were invited into the dining room to pariake of ices and cake. Gardens are uuusually good, aud there is a quantity of frnit. House keepers aro busy preparing for winter. Just here I am prompted to say : a few fig leaveB scalded and the lea used as hops, in ma king bread is superior to anything wc have ever seen tried. Mrs. Lizzie. Landrum has been called to Batesburg on account of sickness in the horne of her daugh ter, Mrs. Murkerson. .. ? . Miss Hortense Landrum is at home again, after visiting Aagus ta and Batesburg. Two charming little girls of Mrs. Brunson Hollingsworth are visi ting the home of'Mr, D. R. Stroth er, their grandfather. Our vigilant couucil unearthed a diminutive blind tiger and gambling den Saturday evening Pleasant Lane. Crops in this section are need ing rain very bad and are very backward on that account. Sunday last was our regular preaching day at Bere.i and Bro. Blalock'8 place was filled by Rev. Mr. Asbill of Elmwood. Bro. Bla lock was present also. Mrs. J. H. Reel .and children woi6hipped at Berea last Sunday. We always welcome our Edgefield friends wlan they come to our church. Mrs. R. H. Parks continues quite sick. We hope she will Boon be out again. Mr. Tommie Parks and Little Charlotte and Harrison visited lhe family of their uncle Mr. Jas. T. Mims of your town last Saturday .md Sunday. Miss Susie Boone is up from Langley cn a visit to her father Mr. Llewellyn Boone. Mr. Sam Williams is out now as acandidate for the House of Rspreseutativee. "Uncle Sam", you muBt hustle around for we want you to be elected. We know you love fried chicken, so give us a call. You will have to learn to kieB a thousand babies a month or you will never be elected". By the way "uncle Sam", is a candidate for two offices, I had forgotten that. I know he will get one if not both. Mr. F. L. Timmerman is con fined to his room with "Small pox" (as 'tis called). Dr. Nicholson says it's elephant itch. I ^believe he is about right. It isn't at all dangerous. We are very much grieved to hear of the death of Mrs. W. F. West of Augusta. C., June 2'th. 1904. The County Summer School for While Teachers will be opened at Edge?ield, S. C., on Tuesday August the 2nd, 1904 at 12 m. and will dose on the 30th, day of August. The County Board of Education earnestly requests all teachers who expect to teach in the free Public Schools of the County to attend the Summer School, and to encourage them to attend, have passed the following resolutions : That the County Board of Educa tion do aid those teachers of the Coun ty who taught last Session and who expect to teach the coming Session, | and who feel that they are not finan cially able to bear the expense of at tending the Summer School, to tin? exLent allow and pay them the sum of ten dollars to aid them in pajing Board and furnish them with necessa ry books. The teachers who desire to take advantage of this offer must en roll at the opening of the term, attend regularly, and stand examination at the end of the school .
