WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 1904.
A Michigan judge has decided
that a husband may spank his
wife; but it will not take the
Michigan wife long to overrule the
. decision of the court.-Ex.
On Saturday la st the lynching
of a negro in New York city, who
attacked two unaccompanied girls,
was narrowly averted. Wonder
what the great metropolitan dailies
will say about it? Such occur
rences, iu their very mid?t, bringe
the northern Pharisees face to face
with the race problem.
One of the Greenwood oil mills
is to be converted into a fertilizer
factory. Every farmer, by giving
his stables, cow stalls and barn
yard proper attention, can have a
fertilizer factory of his own. The
quality of the out-put of Baid fac
tcry will be all right, too. He
need not trouble to have it analy
zed. v
Saluda and Greenville counties
are neck and neck in the matter
of homicides. SOBB?ODS court con
vened in Greenville on Monday
with fifteen cases of homicide on
the criminal docket. Is thia whole
sale shedding of human blood at
tributable to "moonshine," blind
tiger or South Carolina liquor?
Very probably the latter.'
If your life is insured and you
are hanged or otherwise legally
executed your heirs or assigns
cannot collect the policy, so rules
a Pennsylvania judge. A few days
ago a Pennsylvania court sustain
ed an inpurance company in re
fusing to pay a policy m a case
in which the in BUK d met his death
by-legal execution for crime.
Fox the first time in-the world's
history, a leper-a Creole boy, aged
fifteen years-in New Orleans has
been completely cured. It is
worthy of notice, too, that the cure
WEB effected by an old remedy that
v.as systematically applied, and
not by any of the newfangled
nostrums or cure-alls of the pres
ent day.
The disastrous fire which re
duced to ashes $133,000 worth of
property was a severe blow to our
sister town of Greenwood. But the
spirit and enterprise that made
almost within the last decade
Greenwood one of the foremost
towns in the state will cause hand
some business blocks to be erected,
where the embers are yet smoking,
and in a few short months visitors
to this fair town will see no traces
of the merciless flames.
: That the department of agricul
ture has found an ant ^Guatemala
to be an effective enemy of the boll
weevil is delightful news to the
entire cotton belt, the farmers of
Texas especially. The ant will
be introduced into the cotton states
to check the ravages of the weevil.
This pest is the greatest menace
thatjhas confronted the south in
years and should it be not checked'
is certain to bring disaster second
only to Sherman and his vandals.
The divorce evil is being dis
cussed on the rostrum, from the
pulpit and by the press as never
before. Throughout the north and
west ministers are refusing to
.marry persons who have been di
vorced for any cause whatsoever.
This is striking at the effect and
not at the cause. Agitation will,
of course, to some extent arouse
and awaken the public conscience,
thereby accomplish some good, but
it appears to us that the most ef
fective means of counteracting
this monster evil is by proper
teaching in the home. Rear a
generation of youog men and
young women who have high ideals
and a proper conception of life;
who regard the marriage relation
as sacred and is not to be trifled
wita, th?n there, will not be the
thousands seeking human devices
to cast asunder what God has
joined together.
We believe that the people of
every section of the state will
heartily approve of the action-of
the Democrstic executive commit
tee in abolishing the county to
county state campaign meetings.
These meetings have been an im
position upou candidates and peo
pie alike. One meeting will be
arranged for each congressional
district, which meaus that only
seyen will'be held instead of forty
odd as heretofore.
The fundamental Democratic
principle isjuajority rule. Every
Simon pure-Democrat bows to the
will of tho majority of the people
whether it be expressed by the
ballotor by their representatives
in convention assembled. On be
ing asked whether or not he would
abide the reBult of the St. Louis
convention, William J. Bryan, who
is more autocratic than Demo
cratic, replied : "Things have not
developed far enough yat to tell."
The natural inference is, if Bryan
is ignored, as he deserves to be,
he will not acquiesce in the doings
of the majority of the body a3 will
every true Democrat.

The two games of ball . played

The latter was an exceptionally

Help the Ladies in This Worthy
Canse.
The ladies of Edgefield have or
ganized a chapter of the "Beauti
ful America Club."
No undertaking can be so worthy
as to beautify the grounds of the
town and yards of th? homes.
- Our first object is to give several
entertainments during the summer
mouths for the purpose of raising
funds to beautify the public square
.by planting trees and flowers in
the park.
After we have completed the
square, we hope to improve other
parts of the town.
We feel eure that our progressive
mayor and council will give their
support in IbiB good work.
All citizens, when called on,
should lend a helping hand and
patronize our entertainments.
Next Friday evening, af.ter the
