The balanceless bank ac count and the moneyless pocket are in evidence during the post-Christmas season. The greatest architectural wonder of the age will be the forty story office building that is soon to be erected in New York at a cost of $10,000.000, It will be five stories beneath the ground and 615 feet above. A dispatch from Washing ton states that Saturday was children's day at the White House, President and Mrs. Roosevelt being '-at home" to about five hundred little folks. Wonder what color prevailed among these little guests, white, tan or black? It is estimated that ninety five per cent of the robberies in Philadelphia are committed by colored people. No mat ter in what clime they are found the innate depravity of the race manifests itself. There are a few exceptions, however,- for Edgefield has some upright, honest negroes. The members of the staff of a Georgia weekly evidently have a grudge against its editor, their recent Christmas present to him being a supply of cigarettes for the year 1904. Such a quantity of these "coffin nails" within easy, reach of a cigarette fiend will put him out of business in. less than a year. The mismanagement and the bad financiering of all the Whaley mills in Columbia will to a limited ex ent injure the credit of every cotton mill in li ihe southT rr~Ts certain fon have a deterrent effect upon the flow of eastern capital southward for the purposes of industrial development. Away with anything that even savors of "wild cat" cotton mill building. "Elijah" Do wie, the reli gious fanatic whose only peer in the sensational world is Carrie Nation, says : "Every man who votes the Demo cratic ticket is a jackass." Those who have voted this ticket for many years and whose ears have not been pro longed thereby have the con solation of knowing th at every utterance of this self consti tuted prophet does not come from the Bible or the prayer book. One half of the world never knows how the other half lives. It is estimated that Christmas presents aggregat ing $2,500.000 were given the employes of Wall street. Doubtless in some quarters of New York cit)7 many poor people hungered for lack of food and shivered for lack of clothing and fuel. They would have been made glad by being recipients of the every-day necessities, to say nothing of Christmas luxuries. VOLUME LXIX, NO. I. With this issue the ADTER TISER begins its sixty-ninth year. Uninterruptedly for nearly three score and ten years it has paid its weekly visits to the hundreds of homes throughout the length and breadth of Edgefield county, weeping with those who have wept and rejoicing with those who have -rejoiced-ever a friend of the masses. As we enter upo.i another year we are deeply grateful to our friends and the public for their liberal patronage in the past and respectfully solicit a con tinuance for the future. The success which we have achiev ed wrould have been impossi ble had it not been for the sympathy and material sup port which have been accord ed us. We shall continue to labor with an eye single to the development of Edgefield town and county, pledging that the ADVERTISER shall ever strive for that which con tributes to the greatest good to the greatest number. Our pretty, and fascinating girls are returning-Miss Marie Coleman, Mise Andrena Ouzts and Miss Fannie strother are at home. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Harris, accompa nied by Ruth and J. S. Jr., are spend ing the holidays with relatives. Rev. Murkeraon and family of An derson and Mr. (George Landrum and family of Texas will spend a few weeks with Mrs. Lizzie Landrum. We haven't written in sometime, so scaicely know how to begin, though we have s -me ne** from this side of the county-for we still live in old Edgefield, notwith standing all the tulle about Cal houn and Hammond couutiet!. We love Edgefield, but Edgefield doesn't love us. She leaves us off ou this little "nook" between ihe river aud creek, with no bridges to cross the tributary streams of tae aforesaid water ways, no roads worked in two years-though sad to tell, old Edgefield is scrupulous ly particular about having passed into her treasuries all commuta tion tax which can be legitimately collected, and how she insists on the taxes being assessed and paid must be horrible to the auditor and treasurer when they attempt a trip over our roads,-no bridges to Dross Stevens creek, aud, as the forlorn darkey said, "no notbin'." Middleton Rich, accompanied by Mr. Allie Brabham, b as gotten here from Augusta, Messrs. H. C. Mid dleton, of Augusta and R. H. Mid dleton, of Savannah, have each forsaken business lor a few day's visit at tbe o.d home, and the ar rival of Dr. Colyer Meriwether from Washington, D. C., for a day or two with his mother, has made all Clark's Hill rejoice. He is ona of the much-loved sons she has sent out into the world. Misses Nettie, Martha and Mary Bell from Parksville are with their aunt, Mrs. M. B. Rich, and M?BS Sadie Meriwether comes fi om her school iu Millen for a rest from her studies, to her home at Meriwether, We welcome, most cordially, all | these young people and older ones, too, and hope each returning sea sou may find them homeward bound ! Mrs. H. A. Adams, who has been|in Augusta for several weeks for medical treatment, has spent a day or two at home during this festive Beacon. She returned to day to Augusta. We are all glad to welcome that consecrated Christian man, Rev. J. T. Miller of Parksville, back on this circuit again this year tho' we know 'twill be the last, as he has already serued ub faithfully and well, for three years.
