Passed Over the River.
On Thursday evening last at
3 o'clock the remains of Mr. Oliver
L. Dobson wcrelaid to rest in our
village cemetery. The funeral was
conducted from the Baptist church
of which Mr. Dobson had been a
member and deacon for many
years, his pastor Rev. C. E. Burts
officiating. Mr. Dobson had been
a resident of Edgefield since his
early manhood, his mother having
refugeed from Charleston to Edge
field duriug tbe war, the old Dob
son house on Columbia street now
delapidated, having once been the
comfortable homo of Mrs Dobson
and her family. Up to several
years ago he was a cor^ts it atten
dant upon his church services and
duties, and ever sinre his unhappy
physical afflictions, he has mani
fested wheuever possible his con
tinued interest in "the things of
the Lord," attending church when
ever possible. Mr. Dobson did
valuable service as a Confederate
soldier, counting it a privilege to
obey his country's call to duty.
At the time of his decease Mr.
Dobson was 59 years of age and
was a member of the order of
Knights of Honor. He leaves his
wife and eight chitdren, the two
eldest being Charles R. Dobson of
Augusta, a?d Mrs W. A. Strom,of
the Self section of our country.
All of his family were with him at
the time of his death.
A Modern Building.
A handsome new building
modern in all of its appintments
-is soon to be erected by Contrac
tor Spencer for Mr. D. A. Tomp
kiup ou the corner lot opposite the
Bank of Edgefield. The dimen
sions are 28 feet front by 75 feet
in "length, being two stories high
with elegant offices on the second
floor. The entire front of the
building will be of plate glaBs and
the flocr for two-thirds of the
length of the building will be laid
of beautiful tilyrug. This will be
the most up-to-date buildiug iu all
its appointments that has ever
been erected in Edgefield. As soon
as completed it will be occupied
by a new firm whoee plans have
nut yet sufficiently matured to be
made public. Very soon full de
tails will be given to the public.
Determined Opposition.
The people of this section of the
county are ditermined n<-t to leave a
stone unturned in tJie matter of pre
venting further dismemberment of tbe
old county. A portion of the west-side
of our county is turning heaven and
earth to secede and become a part of
che proposed Calhoun county, while a
large strip from the south-side is also
hoqeful that the Hammond county
scheme will materialize and include
that section in its boundaries. To the
end that both enterprises be defeated
the Business League met on Friday
afternoon and discussed the matter.

Adams, was appoiuted to take neces
sary steps to pievent further encroach
ment upon the now limited area of old
Edgefield, the mother of counties.

On Thursday night last the new
barn of Capt. John R. Blocker
was burned, and besides the con
tents, such as fodder, bay, etc, a
uew buggy, two mules and a horse
were bumed to death, and another
mule wes so badly burned as to be
permanently disabled. The fire
occurred at three o'clock at night
which, with other circumstances,
indicates that it was the act of an
incendiary. Capt. Blocket had the

Mr. S. T. Williams, the success
ful farmer and merchant, says that
the crops are two months short iu
his section. They began gathering
one month later aud will stop one
mon'b earlier than usual.
The Corner Store, with its heaps
and piles of fall goods, is scarcely

The secret of it is a bright little
lady arrived at his home on Wed
nesday eveniug last.
The two faithful teachers and
twelve bright and happy little tots
were on baud Monday morniug
and the Kindergarten opened un
der more favorable auspices than
last year. Every little child in
Edgefield between the ages of four
and six should attend this school.
Superintendent of Education
Byrd announces that his office
days will be Mondays and Satur
days, and that during the week he
will be making the rounds visiting
the schools. This is well, for it will
be of great benefit to the schools
to have him visit them.

Mrs. Emma McDougall, of In
dianapolis, arrived on Thursday
last to spend a fortnight with her
brother, Mr. M. D. Lyon. Her visit
to relatiyes in ?South Carolina
would be prolonged, but ber sou,
after an absence of foirr months
touring Europe, ha? just returned
and she hastens to join him.
It will be disappointing to the
lovers of the golden fruit to learn
that choice bananas will be veiy
scarco and very high for some
months to come. Owing to the
prevalence of storms throughout
the tropical regions the crop has
been seriously injured, and is
short, as we are accustomed to
saying in these parts.
Before completing the college
building, which will probably^be
the latter part of December, Con
tractor Spencer will have several
other buildiugs in process of erec
tion. He has already contracted
for work that will require fully
eighteen months to perform, which
means that during that time1 thou
sands of dollars paid for labor a?d
material will be putin circulation.

of Mrs. Annie Parker Easterling,
sympathize deeply with her in the
death of her husband, Mr. Robert
J. Easterling, from Brights' Dis

but few towns in the state of equal
size whose citizens carry as great a
volume of life insurance as do che
citizens of Edgefield, it is also a fact
that no town has a more honest, honor
able and high toned aggregation of
gentlemen, wno represent the strong
