The ladies of our Methodist church were amply rewarded for their work and worry in preparing the ryster supper that was given on F? iday eve ning last. They can always count upon a large patron age. Death of an Aired Citizen. After a sojourn of nearly three score and ten years Mr. Elijah Dorn passed away at his home nenr Celestia, Saluda county, on the 13th inst. He was probably the oldest surviving member of this honest and sturdy pi oneer family. Mr. Dorn led a quiet life, and was a great lover of home only going beyond the confines of his immediate neighborhood whKi urgent business required it. He had made peace with his God and in his dying moments signified his readiness and his willingness.to be urshered into the presence of his Maker. The deceased was twice married, being survived by his second wife and sixteen children. The interment took place on Wednes day last in the private burying ground not far distant J rom wnere he was born and reared. The Tent Meeting. Rev. R, fi. Subletr, the evangelist, and his faithful co-laborer, Mr. Dur ham, who conducts the singing, ar rived on Saturday afternoon and have been holding very interesting services in the opera house. The large tent, with a seating capacity of 2500, is ex pected to arrive on every train, being delayed while in transit. Rev. Mr. Sublett has been very successful wherever he has been and if the oeople of our community will do their part a great revival of the old time religion can be had here io Edgefield. We need such a meeting. Attend every serviceand urge others togo. When the tent arrives it will be erected on tte lof. at the end of the railroad track, being.convenient to everybody who desires to attend. Itseem8 that we will not much longer have a dearth of houses in Edgefield. .Already plans "have' been drawn and contracts let for some, aDd there are rumors of others yet to be contracted for. We have been reliably informed that Mr. C. W. Spencer has closed contracts for the immediate erec tion of ten residences. It is gen erally conceded that building fever spreads like contagion, conse quently when some of our citizens build houses for '.heir own ure and for rent, it will cause others to do likewise. Once the ball has been set in motion it is probable that before many months no prospec tive new coners will lack fora Bocee. Hasten the day ! i ._._ Fourth Quarterly Conference. The fourth Quarterly Conference of the Edgefield circuit will be held-in the Edgefield Methodist church on Saturday and Sunday next. Rev. J. S. Beasley, the presiding elder of Columbia dis trict will preach hoth Saturday and Sundry morning. The business session cf the Confer mee will be held Saturday afternoon. A full representation is desired, aud the fact that Rev. Mr. Beasley is to preach assures a large attendance upon the devotional exercises. On former visits to Edgefield Rev. Butler spent Sun day in Columbia with Mrs. But ler. The latter will return to Edge field the latter part of this week after spending the summer in the mountains. Col. F. N. K. Bailey has been truck farming this year on a large scale a-nd he is now profiting by it. His tables are daily supplied with vegetables, etc-, of his own making. Supreme Dictator J. C. Shep pa'od is speuding thie week in Balti more, New York and Boston in the interests of the Knights of Honor, of which order he is the highest official. Mrs. Lizzie H. Folk, accompani ed by little Julia, went to Gaines ville Ga., on Wednesday last, where she will Bpend sometime, boping that the latter's health will be benefitted by the change. ' At his own request Prof. Wi P. Coker was granted a lotter of dis mission from the Edgefield Baptist church on Suuday last, and will unite with the church at Weldon N. C., where he is teaching. Miss Mary Holston left Monday morning for Red Hill to enter upon her duties as assistant teacher in the large school ef that prosperous community. She will board at the home of Mr. Thomas who resides near the Behool building. Mr. Thomas Carson, a nephew of Gen. M. C. Butler, who was a for mer student of the S. C. C. I., spent several days in Edgefield last , week. Mr. Carson is engaged in ( the railway service and is stationed : at Concord, N. C. For three consecutive yee rs Moss ' township has had the distinction of being the first to pay state and , county taxes. On Thursday last, the first man to come forward and pay his taxes was that sterling j citizen Mr. J. Nick Griffis,'of the Cleora section. Miss Virginia Addison leaves on Friday to attend the marriage of 1 Mies Jennie Addison and Mr. J. 1 E. Arthur, of Ninety-Six, which will be solemnized on Wednesday evening next at the home of th^. 1 bride. Miss Virginia will go via Columbia where she will stop several days with friends. Mr. J. Berrien Walker, after au absence of three months from our town, was .warmly greeted by his many friends on Sunday la6t Mr. Walker is travelling, in the inter ests of large clothing manufac turers of Philadelphia, and he will be at home but little during the uext tb re* months. Glover who visited her sister, Mrs; P. R. Wates. Miss Julia V. Tompkins, accom panied by pretty little Miss Ruth Strom spent Saturday and Sunday in Edgefield with the home folkB. Her many friends greeted her very cordially. Miss Julia is delighted with her position as teacher at the home of Hon. W. A. Strom. There was quite a large number representative citizens from all over the county on our street3 on Monday. Indeed, we do not re member to have seen so many lead ing citizens from every section of the couuty when there was no pub lic occasion to attract them hither. Rev. C. E. Burts had his horse and buggy driven from Blackville lasi week. Having a nice turnout alwayB athis command, will great ly facilitate in the matter of pas toral visiting, -especially among tknse who reside several miles from* his church. Superintendent G. R. Spencer and family, and Contractor C. W. Spencer and family, and Mr. and Mrs Friday, the parents of Mrs. C. W. Spencer, .have rented and moved into the large residonce of Mrs. V. C. Addison, near the Babtist church. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Ouzts are now comfortably ensconsed in their cozy cotcage home near the Griffin hill, which they recently purchased from M. P. Wells, Esq., Mr. Thomas; who vacated the house for Mr. Ouzts, has removed to the Bennett house near the Pres byterian church. Mr. John B. Davis began at the bottom rouud with the Southern about two years ago and now he is Capt. Davis) conductor . of the quarry train. This shows what perseverance and faithful perform ance of every dury will do for a young man. Messrs. J. L. Addi son aud J. E. Minn are also mem bers of Capt. Davis'crew. , Mrs. Foreman, Miss An.ni.e Foreman and Mrs. H. H. Stem bridge returned to Ellenton on Thursday la6t after spending the summer with Mesdames C. J. Ash ley and M. E. Merriman. These good ladies were charmed with Edgefield and it was with reluc tance that they returned to their home which is not far from the malaria infested region. At the close of the regular week ly prayer meeting at the Baptist church on Wednesday evening last, which was very largely attended, Mr?. Mamie Warren and Miss Ina Hill united with the church. The former was a member of old Mt. Tabor church before i wa? aban doned and the latter presented herself for baptism. The ordi nance of baptism will be admin istered at an early day. The rainy season will soon set in and the ladies should make ready for it. The Corner Store adver tises this week all of the latest materials for rainj'-day skirts. While in the north Mr. W. H. The farmers of the Meetiug Street section, like those of other ?ections adjacent to Edgefield, prove their faith in our cotton market by their works. On Thurs day last a procession of wagons from several of the farmers around Meeting Street brought thirty bales af cotton to Edgefield, and were paid the top of the market for the lot. Is there any wonder then that nearly all the cotton grown north o? Edgefield is sold on our market. Mr. James B. Adams was amone; the visitors to our town on Monday from the lower section of Edgefield county. While eu route to Edge field he passed the corps of sur veyors who are locating the Hue for the North Augusta county. They began on the Savannah river about a mile below Modoc, and had reached the Martiutown road some distance north of Dr. J. N. Graf ton's. The advocates of the new couuty are up and doing, but it is by no means certain that their efforts will profit them anything, for "there's .nany a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip." Cadet Garrie ot Col'eton county who r-.ceutly entered upon his senior year as a student of the S. C. C. I., has accepted a position as teacher of mathematics in the Baptist Associational school of Clyde N. C., at a salary of $50 per month.
