had plenty of sunshine and heat
during the last week, and refresh
ing thunder showers this week.
The hail aad lightning which ac
companied these storms did con
siderable damage I hear. In the
Meriwether section (below here)
hail beat the crops dows. A ne
gro boy was killed across the river]
near Mr. J. E. Lukes by lightning.
The roof was torn off of Mr. Win
chester McDaniel's dwelling near |
Modoc.
On last Monday afternoon Mr.
Holmes, the section master here,
was shot by Dod Philpot, colored.
The shooting was caused by the j
negro going to Mr. Holmes' well
Sunday night and using some very i
bad language. He was told not to j
do so again. He then began curs
ing Mr. Holmes, saying uthat be
would see him again". On Mon*
day he met Mr. Holmes ?ad pulled
two pistols and began firing. He
fired seven times, hitting Mr.
Holmes in the hip. Mr. Holmes
fired six times, but does not know
whether he hit him or not. The
negro's wound is not dangerous.
Dr. Bell, of Park&ville, came down
and dressed it. The negro has es
caped, and if caught there is strong ]
talk of lynching him.
The lruit growers here are very
busy. The peaches are ripening]
from ten to 15 days earlier than
usual. They will be of a much
finer quality than last year's crop.
Cotton and corn are looking fine
in this section, also gardens are
good and we are having plenty of
vegetables.
Rev. J. T. Miller preached as
fine a sermon here last Sunday as
I ever heard. His text was from
the first and second verses of the
12th chapter of Hebrews. He
preaches here every fourth Sunday
and Mr. Lanham,every second
Sunday.

visiting relatives and friends here.
Mr. Gus Edmunds, sub-county
supervisor, was over not long since

A Very Sudden, Pery Sad Death.
On Wednesday morning last
since our last issue-a pall of deep
est sorrow waB cast over our town
by the sad, very sad, intelligence
of the death of Mr. D. D. Padgett
in Augusta, whither he had gone
on business pertaining to his duties
as Supervisor of Edgefield county.
While at breakfast he was stricken
with heart trouble-pronounced
fatty degeneratiou of the heart by
the attending physicians-and in
a few short minutes the hitherto
strong body became lifeless. Mr.
Padgett was not only well known
throughout the length and breadth
of our county but so universally
did he hold the confidence and
esteem of his fellow-citiztns that
he was twice elected to the office of
Supervisor. Ho was ever faithful
to the confidence reposed in him
as the chief executive officer of tho
county, guarding with a jealous
eye the welfare of his constituents.
A citizen of sterling worth, a
ueighborever thoughtful and kind,
as husband and father of tender
est affections has, in this untimely
death, been cut off in the meridi
an of a useful life.
Although with our finite vision
we cannot always see it, God knows
best, and after thia mortal-like
our deceased friend-shall have
put on immortality, we shall see
that Ile doeth all thiugs well.
Fifteen years ago Mr. Padgett wac
married to Miss Emmie Gaines, a
woman Oi unusual culture and re
finement and possessed of rare in
tellectual attainments. Heaven
had blessed this happy union with
eleven children, only four of whom
survive the father, the youngest
being a babe of three months. The
high esteem in which the deceased
was so universally held was attest
ed by the great number ef rela
tives and friends who attended
the interment which took place in
the family burying ground on

dress of President Snyder, of Wof
ford, was very good, and held the
attention of even the very small
children. Music by the small
children emphasized by its excel
lence what the future holds in
store for us, if their progress con
tinues. Music by the yeung la
dies did credit to their ability and
the effici mcy of their instructor,
Miss Nina Ouzts.

impressed the audience, and added
to the solemnity and sacredness of
the occasion.
Monday evening closed the exer
cises. The essays and music weie

beginning to end. Altogether it
was one of Ihe best commence
ment exercises we have ever at
tended.
On Wednesday, June 3rd, Jef
ferson Davis' birthday will be cel
ebrated by appropriate exercises.
Mr. S. McG. Simkins, of Edge
field, will deliver an address and
crosses of honor will be given to
quite a number of veterans.

Gentlemen:-Tn September, 1809, f took rheiynutism In avery bad form.

bogan to get bettor. I used five and a half bottles and was eomplotejy cured.
That was two years ago, and my health bas been excellent ever since- Have had

remedy for rheumatism on the market. I cannot say too much for it. I have
recommended it to others since and lt has cured them.
Will say further, that I bogan to walk in about six days after I began to take
' RHEUMAOIDE," with the aid of crutches ; in about three months after I began
to take lt, 1 could walk as good as anybody, and went back to work again.
