large and appreciative audience. It
was decidely the b^st opera of the
season. It was enjoyed by all. Many

Mr. John A. Holland, of Ninety
Six, the hustling representative of
the manufacturers of the famous
Krell piano informs us that not
withstanding the fact that the ca
pacity of the factory is very great
and one of the best equipped in the
county, having 120 thousand feet
of floor space enough orders are
now on file to tax the factory to iti
fullest capacity to fill them by the
first of January. This means that
any one who contemplates buying
a Krell piano could not get one be
fore the new year. You can, how
ever, place your order now and it
will be shipped at the earliest pos
sible date. That so large a factory
cannot supply the demand is a
strong testimonial of itself for the

Death of An Aged Lady. .
Mise Aun Shaw died at hei
home near Ropers on Wednesday
lash Her sojourn upon earth was
longer than is usually allotted to
mortals. Notwithstanding the fact
that she was an invalid duringher
latter years she bore the affliction
patiently, always exercising a
sweet, Christian influence over
those with whom she came in con
tact. For fifty three year? she was
a consistent member of the Bap
tist church. ShP is survived by one
brother, Dr. H. A. Shaw. The
fumerai was conducred from her
borrjG and her remains were laid to
rest in the family burial grouodjon

An Apt Art Pupil.
The celebrated shoe manufac
turers, Messrs. Hamilton & Brown,
through their local dealer, Mr. J.
M. Cobb, distributed booklets con
taining cuts of all styles of their

a pair of shoes to the person-one
in each State-who made the best
drawing of tho shoes in the book.
Little Miss Ellen Dunovant,daugh
ter of our popular merchant, Mr.
W. L. Dunovant, won the prize
over all the other competitors in
South Carolina. This is a great
compliment to Edgefield's little
artist and to her teacher, Miss
Eliza Mims.
Another Small Fire.
Last Sabbath's stillness was bro
ken about two o'clock in the after
noon by another startling fire
alarm. The well-house in the yard
of Judge W. F. Roath had caught
from tome unknown cause, pre
sumably spontaneous combustion
or rats and matches. This small
house was totally destroyed and
as the flames were blown directly
toward the dwelling it wculd have
burned also but for the chemical
engine. The two fires in which
the engine lias been used occurred
nearly a mile from the engine
house and base of supplies, yet,
against odds, it has performed its
part well. Considering the nar
row escape of having his home
burned we are delighted that our
good neighbor's misfortune was
no greater than it was.
The College Building.
The suspense and anxiety of our
people caused by the possibility
of our not being able to get such a
school building as the needs of the
the town require for the sum at
our command have been dissip
ated. The contract has been let to
Mr. C. W. Spencer of North Caro
lina, a contractor of considerable
prominence, and. by the way, a
brother of Suparinteudent Spencer
of the cotton mill. At the earliest
possible moment after the de
tails of the contract have been ar
ranged ground will be broken and
the old academy grove will be the
scene of an array of brick masons,
carpenters and laborers each doing
with all his might the task assign
ed him. It goes without saying
that Mr. Spencer will press for
ward with all possible despatch for
on this, having a maximum of
work done in a minimum of time,
hangs largely his profits. Such be
ing the case, with no untoward
circumstance retarding the pro
gress, the S. C. C. I. will be quar
tered in the new college building
after the lajisa of only a few
months.

NOTICE is hereby given that the
general election for State and
County officers will be held at the
voting precincts prescribed by law
in said County, on Tuesday, No
vember 4,1902, said day being Tues
day following the first Monday in
November, as prescribed by law.
At the said election a separate
box will be provided, at which qual
ified electors will vote upon the
adoption or rejection of an amend
ment to the State Constitution as
provided in the following Joint Res
olution.
A Joint Resolution Proposing to
Amend Section ll of Article VII,
of the Constitution of 1895, Rela
ting to Counties and County Gov
ernment.
Section 1. Be it resolved by the
General Assembly of the State of
South Carolina*. That Hie following
amendment to Section II., Article
VII., of the Constitution, be agreed
to: add to the end thereof the fol
lowing words: that this section
shall not apply to the following
townships in the following counties:
Dunklin andOaklawn in the coun
ty of Greenville j the townships of
Cokesbury, Ninety-Six and Cooper
in the county of Greenwood; Sulli
van township in the county of Lau
rens; Huiettand Pine Grove in the
county of Saluda. That the cor
porate existence of said townships
be, and the same is hereby, destroy?
ed and all officers under said town
ships are abolished and corporate
agents removed.

ing this amendment shall be sub

til the same is completed, and make

office and sign the same.
Within three days thereafter, the
