HIMS, - - - EDITOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 30: 1902. ~^?^?Td has awakened from her Rip Van Winkle s?eep and is now on the eve of a great boom. The thousands of dollars thatwill be put into circula tion while the college building is being erected will give an impetus to business in Edge field that will have a telling and lasting effect. ^Kershaw Era : The popu larity and power of the dis pensary in politics is evidenc ed by the attitude of the sev eral candidates for guberna torial honors. They stick to it "like a sick kittten to a hot brick." Our town will take on new life when the day laborers brick-layers, carpenters and others are employed in erec ting the $15,000 college build ing. The money will be spent in Edgefield and the mer chants, doctors, dentists, and lawyers will all be bcnefitted. Hon. D. S. Henderson stiuck the key note with re ference to the national Demo eratic party when he said that all true Democrats ot eveiy section should get to gether on'a common plat form and the leader will come The trouble has been we have had too many leaders. mails wt the mair the sam dwell ai issue wi some ot six cloe evidenc researc no atte withou lighten CONG F A tr iticiau neck * race. and p into ti cent ' of life with ment up in that i astru goad the i cont stric shot ed r the ing the ed'< sha the prii bre the stil wt wa mi ck w< inj of th cc is se P1 n tl ti Batesburg Advocate : The people of Edgefield have^ac bu!kfing~for the ?^\T?/An town may count itself fortu nate to have in it a school of such proportions^ In all things we wish Edgefield well, how ever, if they don't want to put up the cash, let the fact be known and Batesburg wil show the color of her money. A word to the wise is suffici cent. CAMPAIGN MEETING. . During the Years that are past and gone Edgefield has had campaign meetings ga lore, son:? being a credit to our old county, others were of the imbroglio type. Indeed our memories need not run 30 back without recalling a campaign scene in our midst which was humiliating in the extreme. Our errors of the past were largely retrieved by the senatorial and congres sional meeting on Thursday last which was an ideal one. Interest and enthusiasm were evidenced without their too frequent accompaniments - clamor and rowdyism. The good natured audience re i sponded with applause when merited and timely but not a howl was heard. SENATORIAL ASPIRANTS. Our efficient county chair man, Hon Thomas H Rains ford, who presided with be coming dignity, rapped the meeting to order and in a few well chosen words stated the why and wherefore of the as semblage. Rev G W Davis invoked divine presence and guidance. Then the six sena tonal aspirants, whose names are familiar to our people, were given half an hour each to discuss the paramount is sues that are part and parcel of our national life. These discourses being interspersed with spicy anecdotes and il lustrations they never became dry and uninteresting to the audience. The six gentlemen, while the God of nature has I not bestowed intellectual en dowments to the same degree upon each, may be called brainy men. The voters will have to make a choice solely upon persona! grounds, for all are ?greed as to the mo mentous questions of the day and stand upon a common platform. The Republican tariff laws ship subsidy, trusts omhmations. expansion J ?re all discussed. In ithe arguments were e. One speaker would id expatiate upon one lile another would ride ;her as his hobby. The nient addresses gave :e of much study and h. As a consequence ntive hearer went away t being edified mid en ed thereby. tESSIOXAL ASPIRANTS. io of thorough bred pol s are booked for the md neck congressional Quite a bit of ginger epper is being injected his contest as the irides risions and anticipations : in the national capital, the honors and emolu s incident thereto, loom the distance. Ambition, iron-hearted jockey, sits Je these perspiring steeds ing them unmercifully as ?ace nears its close These estants are not adhering tly to the rules that lld govern all well r?gul?t ace courses. They ignore issues involved by "cuss ' the merits and discussing demerits of their fleet-foot Dpponents. However, we ll soon see who will win golden spurs. After the mary one of these thorough ds will be browsing upon : green pastures beside the 1 waters of the Potomac, lile the other two will go iy back to their respective ingers blanketed i n sack )thand ashes of defeat. In all seriousness our people 2re disappointed in not hear g more of measures and less men discussed by these ree gentlemen who are fully mipetent to discuss national sues with credit to them ilves. Our people think that ersonalities have been un ecessarily introduced into lis race. There is yet a short me in which the mistakes of he past can be atoned tor by levating the congressional :ampaign to the high plane ?vhich it should have occupied .rom the beginning. Each of che three gentlemen has a strong following and, as the expression goes, it is yet any body's race. Beauty TriumpfyT], 'Tim m Pfteo?mmm Tremore. 1 .trenah. Th2 world hi???V?y'_?lde an?
