Croft is a prominent member of the Aiken bar and is well knowu to the Dem ocratic voters of Edgefield. In due season Col. Croft will meet with the people of this county. Mr. A. Fuller Perkins, the AD VERTISER'S right bower, ran the whole gamut of rollickings and frolickings while at tho Exposi tion last week, but we will guaran toe that he did not swell the coffers of the blind tigers even to the extent of the widow's mite. Cobb received a tele gram on Friday last informing her of the death of her brother, Mr. John Clisby, athis home in Mont gomery, Ala. He had been in de fining health for some months. His name and fame are familiar to the people of Edgelield. Mr A R Nicholson announces this week for re election to the olllce of Superintendent of Education, His record is before the people and he is willing to stand hy it. ile needs no introduction to the voters of Edgetleld Mr J B Haltiwanger again makes his bow to the people of Edgelield and asks their suit'! ace in his race for re election to the ollice ol' Auditor ol' this county. Mr Haltiwanger is justly proud of his record as auditor and is willing to stand or fall by it. Judge J D Allen comes before the people asking for re-i-iectmi to the office of Judge of Probate of Edgetield county. Go w?ere you will and search nut only this county but the state from the mountain to the seaboard and you will not rind a man who will til! this office any more satisfactorily than Judge Allen has. P Blalock and the .hildreo were in Charleston attend ing the Exposition iaft week a tele gram was received at her home last Friday announcing the death of her brother, Mr McMillan, who resided near Spartanburg. His arm was caught in some machinery and literally torn ftom Ins body. He never rallied from the severe shock. I. faculty, has formally announced his can didacy for the effice of Superin tendent of Education of Green wood county. Prof. Moore has provou bimsell to be an educator of unusual ability, and the peo ple of Greenwood have an oppor tunity of placing a man at the bead of their educational inte; ests who will infuse new life in the public ?choole. Edgelield has many beautiful streets aud several that are very beautiful. They are made so by the well pruued oaks and elms that shade them. Why not have more of these trees? The outlay for their planting is very small. We trust that some of the beauti ful mid-summer vistas will linger iu the minds of our city fatherr and v.'ill in mid-win ter be au incentive that will cause them to have many more trees planted out. When cold bleak winter comes on we forget how refreshing the shade and how beautiful the tre.s of summer. Resolve now to plant hundreds of trees next winter throughout the length and breadth of our town. The Logomachy club was enter tained ou Thursday evening last at Breeze Hill, the home of Miss Lizzie Hill. The young people were delighted with their four-mile drive. It afforded them a delight ful star-light straw ride. The first lady's prize was won by Miss Kate Sheppard. B. E. Nicholson, Esq., und Mr. B. J. Crooker tied and cut for the gentleman's first prize. Mr. Crooker, being boru on a lucky star. won. Miss Dollie Du gas became the possessor of the consolatun prize. We do not ki ow, we must confess, why this latter is called consolation prize, for it does not carry consolation to its disconsolate recipient. Ironi cally so called, we presume. To call it "booby" prize is horrid. Thc S. S. Convcnticn. Owing to circumstances beyond our control we had '-o foreg; the pleasure-which we had anticipat ed-of attending the Interdenomi national Sunday-School conven tion which met at Horn'e Creek last Friday aud Saturday. We were informed by some who were present that the convention was well atteuded and that the queries were ably discussed by the appointed speakers and other m 'tu bers of the convention. Judging from the quautity of dinner prepared the good w'jraen of the community expected very large crowds arith very large appe tites, both of which were vieibiy in evidence,but the proverbial hos pitality that abounds in the old Horn's Creek section was greater by far than these. For no com munity has any more of the truly Southern hospitality than has Horn's Creek. Wo are informed that the can didates were not out in full force. Johnston Vs. Edgefield. Ping pong may come and ping ?pong may go but base ball goes on j forever. The la'est feat on the Edgefield diamond being the con j test on Friday afternoon last be I tween the Johnston team and our town nine. It bas been declared, by many to be the best game play ed in Edgefield this season. Ther? were sovoral good batters and all round good players on both 6idee. At the end of the game the score stood 8 to 5 iu favor of Edgefield. No Preaching Sunday. The harvest truly is plentiful iu Edgefield, but the laborers are few. The doors of all the towL churches were closed on " Sunday morning las!. The church bells were silent and thtre was rejoicing and exulting in the household of the "enemy of souls." At least one of the churches should be open ev ery Sunday. Line upon line and precept upon precept, of Gospel truth is what our people need and nota Sunday morning should pass without at least giving them an op portunity to hear the expounding of tho scripture. Peace and Plenty. Happy is that cotton planter who can do as Mr. J. T. Ouzts, of Elmwood. He lives and worship* under his own "viue and fig tree." When his crop of cotton is made he stores it on his premises and says tc the speculators, when your price suits me you can get my cot ton and not before. Ou Friday last Mr. Ouzts'wagon loaded with three bales of cotton drove in town-an unusual sight for tho middle of May-drawn by three Well fed, ? ell grjomed horses. This ought not to be au unusual sight, for- what can bc dont? by ono can be done by many. When holding cotton and marketing it every month in the year becomes the general or prevailing custom, and not thc exception, thou our Southland will smile with e and plenty. Children's .D ay. Il is now a fixed custom with the Sunday-school at McKeudree to set apart a day lo be observed annually by tho children as Chil dren's dav. Last Sunday was set apart and very appropriately ob served as such. Quite a number of people from town went up as they do every year. Dinner was prepared by the la dies and served at 'he church and two services were held which con sisted ol recitation*, pongs and choruses by the cr.iidren and sev eral addressee.
