The conditions that have prevailed for some time have been unfavorable to farm work; as a consequence far mers generally are backward, especially those in the clay section, and many will make the mistake of planting with out thorough preparation. Plow the land deep and pul verize it well before planting ; better curtail the area than to putin a full crop hurriedly. By deep plowing the heavy rains instead of washing the land, are absorbed and stored away for the dry season which is sure to come. When the drought does come the soil, being well broken and pulver ized, prevents the evaporation of the moisture which rises from a considerable depth tc feed the^rowine crop^ Again, tue elements of plant life be come easily soluble and more available by thoroughly ~^^?mirV^^o^ m^y Hour ish. while the roots are small and near the surface, but when fruiting season ap proaches and the roots have struck hard-pan only half-a crop is the result at times. Then the elements, seasons, worthless guano, etc., are blamed when the fault lies with the planter. There is a world of truth in the old adage which runs something like this : "Plow deep while sluggards sleep and you'll make plenty of corn to sell and to keep."'' A Business League. Edgefield should have . Business League or call it what you may, we need an organization that has for its object the material advance ment and upbuilding of our town. The wave of indus trial prosperity that has swept over the greater portion of South Carolina within the past few years has not yet reached Edgefield, The apathy and indifference of our business men haye prevented the influx of foreign capital and industri al enthusiasm as effectively as the Chinese wall repels the enemy. Let's arouse from this lethargy ?nd remove the barriers that retard our prog ress? Individual sffort^ven when exerted, does not count for much in getting a staid old town out of the ruts that it has been moving in for a cen tury. It is through the com bined efforts of the leading business men and property owners that bring about last ing results. Our march forward has been at a slow pace in the past. We need a change ofj cadence to that of quick-time, or double-time, if you please, the twentieth century step. A nnmber of small enterprises are, as it were, knocking at our very door. Whose busi ness is it to bid them come in ? Certainly no individual will assume that duty. Then a collection of individuals act ing as one should foster these .mbryo enterprises and there by fan the few sparks that re main among the embers of our commercial life. All progressive towns have Business Leagues. Should not Edgefield have one ? i The Creator, whose know edge is infinite, knows and >rovides for the needs of the >oor creatures of earth. As the days for labor are lengthened the period of rest~"the sev enth day"--is also lengthened . Wood, two farmers of the Red Hiil section, went to Augusta last Thursday ou busiuese. After ac complishing the object for which they went, they left for their home eccupyiug the same buggy. Soon after crossing tho river they were accosted by a mulatto and black Negro, who tried to induce the while men to gamble with them, evideutly to learn whether they had money or not. The men refus ed to notice the negroes and drove leisurely on. At Foxs creek about five miles from Augusta, on the Martiutown road, Messrs. Collius and Wood were stopped again by a mulatto Bteppiugiu frout of the buggy with drawn revolvers ex claiming, "Hands up; your money or your life." Mr. Collius was not armed. As Mr. Wood drew hit 1 pistol the assailant fired the ball I striking Mr. Collius near tho heart > which caused death in a very shorl , time. The secoucTshot struck Mr . Wood in the hip. So far they are at large, The governor should offer a larg? : reward for their capture. Such characters are enemies to humani ty. We have no need for them and the sooner they are out of the way the better. An example should be j made of them by certain and Jspeedy execution. COLD SPUING. Correspondence of Edgefield Advertiser. We are farming now and singing "Am gwine away to-morrow, who ! pa, wno pa," while the birds sing merrily from the adjacent tree?. Our community was shocked at the assassination of Mr. W. L. Col- J lins and attempt on Mr. George Wood in broad day light and in the public road five miles this sido of Augusta. A full account of which has been given in the papers. Mr.colliLB remains were interred at Red Hill on Friday in the pres ence of a large concourse of friends. Mr. Collins was a widower about 50 years old. Ho leaves three de voted Bibters and a brother to mourn his tragic death. Mr. Col lins was a patriotic citizen, ever ready to anewer his country's call. I heard very little comment from the crowd as to what course should be persued to bring the assassins to justice, but. I never saw more determined expressions on the i faces of men than on theirs. Thc governor should offer a liberal re- 1 ward for them. It is murder most ' foul. Mr. L. G. Bell has been commis sioned Magistrate for this district. Hejintends ordering a gown while Mr. E. F. Thomas has ordered a ] bomlet and a sword with suitable j inscriptions on it. The court house | will be moved to Red Hill.
