A TRIP TO SALUDA.
Last Thursday morning a
few hours after the sun had
failed to shine, because of the
cloudiness, we departed the
coast of Edgefield for parts
unknown-to us. After pass
ing the stations of Stickinthe
mud and Rock and Holes, we
reached Johnston on schedule
time-mud time. Arriving,
we stopped and,behold it was
the Monitor. Entering we met
the owner, and he was Ter
rell. ' We thought meeting a
monitor was terrible, but then
we met Waters, and would
have been frightened, had we
not looked on the other side
of the scene. Leaving the Wa
ters and Monitor we thought
the trouble was over, but we
were then introduced to pain
-Miss Ethel Payne. We then
thought everything nice and
serene, but then there was
Miss M obley to meet. They
are two pretty and energetic
young ladies, who assist in the
Monitor office, and are expert
typos .Mr Waters is the fore
man and job printer.
After changing teams, we
then journeyed toward Saluda
Court House. About five or
six miies from Johnston we
met Mr?-Alvin Ethredge, who
inquired as to the condition of
the road over which we had
travelled. We informed her
it was passable and she pass
ed on, somewhat encouraged,
for it was hardly passable
from where we met her to ?
Saluda. We pressed onward
reaching Saluda about 12:30.
Very unlike my name, Fuller,
we we went out in search of
a hotel. We went to Wheel
er's hotel and were refreshed
by eating a square meal and
- we sure got our money's
worth. On up to the main
portion of the town where the
business houses are located,
we met a number of the most
prominent men,among whom
were county officials, clerk of
. x1 : sheriff tr-j
etc., and two or 'three law
yers, who were all busy.
Saluda is a new town, and
is fast growing. The court
house and jail are built of
bricl^nd are large and com
fortable-(the jail is large but
we did not seek admission and
do not really know of the
comfort it possesses). Many
new homes are being built and
other signs of energy and pro
gress were displayed on all
sides. That Saluda has hus
tling and farsighted business
citizens is clearly shown in
the fact that a first-class oil
mill is in operation there.
One thing we failed to notice
was an elegant railway sta
tion. Street cars were not' in
operation nor the electric
lights shining. There is a
time not faraway when Sa
luda will have good railroad
facilities and the town will be
an important centre, for it is
a~good farming community,
the soil is fertile and there is
plenty of ?ood timber over in
there, which guarantees that
sooner or later railroads will
enter Saluda.
At five o'clock we started
on our journey back to Edge
field via Johnston. About 9
we arrived at Johnston "and
it a raining." With all our
hope of reaching home de
parted, we went to Mrs Werts
hotel and were served a good
supper by the good lady of
the house. Thankful for the
blessings received, we passed
the night with a bachelor, but
judging from the what he had
to say in his dreams about his
-, he intends to try double
blessedness and see if there
are riot better things in store
for him. Go ahead, brother.
At 9:3o Friday we started
for home, sweet home, only
^making one stop. Notwith
standing the cold and rainy
weather and our anxiousness
to get home, we stopped to
see our good friend, Judge W
F Roath, who is and has been
very ill for several days. We
found him better and felt re
paid for visiting him. And
at home again, we feel that
Edgefield is all right and is a
good place to live, being sur
rounded by the best and clev
erest people ia the world.

rell, who will convert it into
a six column eight page pa
per, published Tuesday of
each week at Saluda, S. C.
The members of the gener
al assembly cuss and discuss
a good deal and receive sal
aries sufficient to pay their
board, but altogether they
have a fairly good time. A
trip to Augusta was enjoyed
not long since and soon the
trip to the Charleston exposi
tion will be accepted.
Saturday we received the
Granite ville Advertiser, Vol.
i, No. i, published by D. H.
Witherspoon. Long life and
much prosperity, to the Ad
vertiser. This makes a total
of five weekly newspapers at
present being issued in the
county of Aiken. If the old
saying "the more the merri
er" is true, things in the pub
lishing business are very mer
ry in Aiken county.
