THE case of W P Crawford
is an instance in which.a man
got into trouble by not mar
rying. Such instances are few
and far apart. The trouble
generally comes because one
does marry ?
Human life is valued very
low by some people. A bale
of cotton-as cheap as it is
is in some people's sight more
valued than the life and soul
of a man, who was created
after the image of God.
There is sore need of a
standard to be set and the
magistrates required to reach
that standard before commis
sions are issued them to mete
out justice to the transgressor
of the law.
Rev. Sam Jones lectured
in Sumter last week. We do
not know whether he located
hell at or near Sumter or not,
but if he did, he did not
fail to say so. Sam is original
and outspoken, and Sumter
may now be classed as a win
ter resort.
DOING HIS DUTY..
Magistrate Wise, of Saluda
county, granted Mr. Sollee,
the.man.who shot Mr. Asbill,
near Leesville,bail in the sum
of $500. Mr. Sollee has left
for. parts unknown. Magis
trates have no right to bail
when the offense is capital and
it is. their duty to see that the
offense is not capital before
they vive'bail. Th? shooting
of a* man is, of course,, capital
punishment, and Mr. Asbill's
life is still hanging in the bal

paper report of the shooting
was not exaggerated, that the
shooting was certainly brutal
and unwarranted. After
learning the facts of the mat
ter Solicitor J. William Thur
mond wrote to Governor Mc
sweeney informing him of
the remarkable action of the
magistrate who, it is alleged,
failed to airest the man .who
shot Mr. Asbill until a day af
ter the occurrence, and then
took the remarkable action of
releasing the prisoner on the
small bond of $500, while the
victim's life is hanging by a
mere thread,and recommend
ed that Magistrate Wise be
removed from office for non
enforcement of the law. Innis

have never before recom
mended that a magistrate be.
removed, and I dislike to do
so in this case, but I feel that
my official duty requires me
to recommeud that Mr. C. C.
Wise be removed from the

mond in doing what he be
lieves to be his duty when he
knows that it will not add any
to his popularity. This one
action shows what manner of
man Solicitor Thurmond is
that he places duty above po
litical aspirations, and will do
his duty even when leaving
it undone would be more pop
ular with many people. Just
such; men as Mr Thurmond
constitute the kind we need
to fill our offices, and the men
who. cast their votes at the
next.?lection for bolicitor J.
William Thurmond for Con
gress will be voting for a gan
tleman who considers duty
more sacred than holding a
polilical office. ' "
A Handsome Gift.
The firm of Dorn & Mims this
week shipped a box containing a
dozen suits cf boy's clothing as a
gift to the Connie Maxwell orphan
age, Greenwood. This was a very
generous contribution, and the ap
proaching Thanksgiving and the
Christmas season would be suit
able occasions for a similar gift
from more of our good merchants
in Edgefield.

Colonel R B Watson, of Ridge
Spring, was appointed vice-presi
dent from the Second Congression
al district of the state agricultural
and mechanical society, which
held its anunal meeting at Rock
Hill last week.
Miss Ida May McGee, of Green
ville, has been elected as a mem
ber of the faculty of the Louia
na Female College at Keach ie, Al
abama near Shreveport, teaching
the branches of French and Ger
man. Miss Aileen, who gradua
ted at the Greenville Female Col
it ge, distinguished as au art stu
dent, is making a specialty of
etchings, china and tapestry paint
ing, in her alma mater, Both these
vouug ladies are of Edgefield ex
traction and during their visits to
our town have been very popular,
and much admired.
