Thirteen from the'Uni ted States traveled half way rouud the world to avail themselves of this rare opportunity. Furman University is to try the experiment ot a Summer Law School. Prof. G. B. Moore is in charge and Hon. Joseph D. Mc Cullough of Greenville and .the venerable Joseph Daniel Pope, professor of law at the South Car olina College in Columbia, will be among the members of the facul ty. ? A sensation was caused in San Francisco on last Friday by the discovery of a dozen sticks of dy uamite in the basement of a thea ter, which the Presidential party had been invited to visit. INSTITUTE. The South Carolina Co-Educa tional Institute is about to close the most prosperous session in the history o? the Institution. During the present session over 350 stu dents have been enrolled repre senting ten states, 167 of these students are boarders. Last sum iller thousands of dollars were spen{ in enlarging and better equipping the buildings. It wa* then thought that ample rcorn had been supplied for all who wanted to attend this session, but the pa tronage has been so large that it has been impossible to accommo date all whowished to attend. Since January 3rd, applications for rooms in the barracks have be?n rejected. In order to accommo date all those who wish to attend next year, it has been, decided to increase the faculty and enlarge the buildings buring the coming summer. Several thousands of dollars are now in hand for this purpose. Four additions have a. ready been made to the faculty. Major J. P. B. Allen, an A. M. grad uate of the University of Georgia, and who has also taken courses North, has accepted the_ chair of English. For the past six years Major Allen has been Prof. of En glish and Commandant of Cadets injSouth Ky. College. Prof. Jno l'hackston, an A. B. graduate of Furman University, has been se lected for the chair of Mathemat ics. Piof. Thackstou for the past two years has been principal of the Manning graded schools. He has made Mathematics a specialty. Capt. Ralph D. Epps, a first grad uate of the Citadel, has been se lected for the chair of History. Capt. Epps has been successfully teaching in this state fur the past six years. For four years be wes President of the Methodist Con ference School at Cokesbury. Af ter this he taught History and Lit erature in Co!. Patrick's school al Anderson. Mrs. J. P. B. Allen, a first honor graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, Mass., has been selected to tak^'charge of the vocal depart TSent. Mrs. Allen has held simi lar positions in some of the most prominent Female Colleges in the South, and is in every way qual ified for this responsible posi tion. Not only are all of the above teachers well recommended by the faculties, of the different Colleges from which they graduated, but thoyhave proven themselves to be successful teachers. Each ono of theinwas unanimously re-elected to fill the positions . which? they are now holding. With the addi tion of these teachers, the faculty for the session of 1901-1902 will consist of 21 College and Univer sity graduates. Maj. Allen and Capt. Epps are both married. They will live in the main building. Prof. Thackston is a single gentleman and will live in Barracks No. 1, assisting Capt. This will be a sour..o of great disappointment to the old soldiers and very man}' others, it will be remembered that the Act passed at the last session of the General Assembly fixed the ap propriation at "at least $150,000," while the general Appropriation Act only carried an appropriation of$100:000. The sentiment and vote of the General Assembly was that the j ension fund this year should be $150,000. HE HAD THE CASH.
