ANOTHER OLD SOLDIER GONE.
The death of John E. Colgan. at. his
nome near Trenton on Friday night
last was another removal from
r,the ranks of the fast, disappear
ing old Confederate soldier, and

mson, T. C. Strom. W. S. Covar, |
VCovar, W. D. Karney, and B. S.
^Anderson. Mr Colgan was 69 years of (
age at the time of his death, had always
lived the life of a good citizen, and
will be greatly missed for many knew
him and were his friends.

Days ot danger, nights of waking."
DEATH OF MRS. UNITY RYAN.
lira Unity Byan, wife of Capt.
Stanmore B. Byan, died at ber home
near Horn's Creek on Friday last, 2Sth
September. She was about 65 years of
age. Mrs Byan possessed many es
timable quaJilies of both head and
heart, an humble' devoted Christian
she had long since made ber calling
and election sure. Two sons, P. F.and
W. fi. Byan, remain on earth, who will
long remember a mother whose vir
tues were many. Our sympathies are
with the bereaved ones.

pects growing brighter and brighter

Something About Cotton Seed.
In the September numberof the
Forum Mr Edward L. Johnson
makes some statements about cot
ton seed that will be surprising
even to those who have some ac
quaintance with the cotton seed
cop. When it is recalled that it
has been but a few years? com
para' ively, since cotton geed was
regarded as a was+o product, it
seems a little strange to be com
paring the cotton seed crop to the
wheat crop. In estimating the
value of the cotton crop it is not
often remembered that the cotton
seed crop has ;: value that is ap
proaching thtK ie cotton-crop.
Of course every bushel of cot
ton ?teed is now saved, and made
profitable in one way and another,

A statement that Mr Johnson
makes is, that there are five-sev
enths as many bushels of cotton
seed as there are of wheat raised
iu this county, and that the aver
age number of bushels of cotton
seed ?raised to the acre is greater
than the average number of bush
els of ^ heat.
His figures are ss follows:
Wheat, - 13.43 bu.
Cotton seed, 14 9 bu.
The plain inference from lue
foregoing is that the cotton si ed
crop, iu the course of a very ;ew
years, will be as great in volume
as the wheat crop of this country.
The wheat crop cannot be iucreas
ed very much more, while the cot
ton crop can be greatly increased.
lu fact it will increase in propor
tion as the demand for it in
creases. The time may not be
very far distant, therefore, when
tbs cotton seed crop will be of as
great value as the wheat crop.
