BEEF BUTTER, AND MILK.
The Great Value of Cotton Seed
Products to Farmers.
A. B. C., Dear Sir-This subject
of beef, butter and milk production
ont of the seed, hulls and meal of
the cotton plant is of such vast
moment, and importance to the
southern-farmer, to the enrich
ment, aggrandizement and fin
ancial independence of this whole
section that I am not going to
leave it yet at the risk of wearing
your patience. As cotton-seed
meal and hulls are not always
readily procurable by the farmer,
and as it may, under certain con
ditions, pay him better to use
cottonseed instead of hulls and
meal, as for instance where he has
a lorg haul and when the mills,
owning to poor trade and demand
for oil, may not be paying as good
a price for seed as their feeding
value to the farmer calls for, I will
give yon seme rations for feeding,
using seed, instead of hulls and
meal for feeding, and recite some
interesting experiments of the
Mississippi Experiment Station
in regard thereto.
Two lots of four cows each were
taken, and lot No. 1 was fed this
this ration to each cow : Peavine
hay, 5 pounds ; silage, 20 pounds ;
wheat bran, 4 pounds; cotton
seed meal, 3 pounds. Lot No. 2
received as a ration for each cow,
peavine hay, 5 pounds; siloage 20
pounds; wheat bran, 4 pounds
and cotton seed, 6 pouuds. The
expeliment lasted for four weeks
and at the end of that period lot
No.^1 had produced 1,237 pouuds
of milk, lot No. 2 had ' produced
1.334 pounds of milk, also lot
No. 1 had lost 20 ponnds each in
weight and lot No. 2 had gained
12 pounds each in weight. As a
.leauJt of . this experiment we see
that 6 pounds of whole cottonseed
are superior to 3 pounds of cotton
seed meal.both as milk and flesh
producers.
EXPERIMENT NO. 2.
The same cows were fed the fol
lowing rations : Lot No. 1, to each
cow, peavine he/ 5 pounds, silage
20 pounds, wheat bran 4 pounds,
cottonseed meal 3? pounds, and
to lot No. 2 exactly the same
ration except that in place of the
meal 6 ponnds of whole seed were
substituted. At the end of four
weeks lot No. 1 had produced 1,403
pounds of milk, and lot No. 2,
. 1,395 pounds. The results of this
experiment indicated that 3?
pounds of meal are jost abcut
eqnal to six pounds of seed.
EXPERMENl NO 3.
The same cows were fed the
following rations: Lot No. 1 re
ceived for each cow peavine hay
10 pounds, silage 15 pounds, wheat
bran 2 pounds corn and cob meal
6 ponnds, and cottonseed 6 pounds.
Lot No. 2 received for each cow
precisely the same ration except
that 4 pounds of cottonseed meal
were given in place of the cotton
seed. At the end of the period
lot No. 1 had produced 1,302
ponnds of milk, and lot No. 2
1,586 pounds showing the 4 pounds
of meal to be decidedly superior
to the 6 pounds of seed. Summing
up thd folowing conclusions may
be drawn concerning the rations :
First, that 6-pounds of seed are
superior to 3 pounds of meal ;
second, that 6 pounds pf seed are
about equal to 3? pounds of meal ;
third, that 6 pounds of seed are
not equal to 4 pounds of meal;
fourthly, that one pound of meal
would therefore be equal to 1.71
pounds of cotton seed.
The value of this year's cotton
crop has just been estimated by
H. G. Hester, secretary of New
Orleans cotton exchange, to be
$363,784,820 as against $282,772,
.987 the previous year, which re-j
presents $81,011,843 more money
.to the planter? of tho South. The
corn crop will certainly this year
be the biggest financial windfall
to the corn grower that he has
ever known. With corn worth 40
cents a bushel, and with the crop
probably above 2,000,000 bushels,
there is the enormouns gain to
farmers who raise corn of about
$400,000.000 "over what they got
lour year* ago-the price now be
ing double what it was theo, and
the crop, probably amost, if not
quite,, as large as then.

There. have been missionary
boxes sent to the heroes and
heroines of the church, fighting
her battles in the van, that have
done more harm than good, in
fact hurt pride and damaged.self
respect. To a lady and agentle

bag. Ashamed to send them
anywhere else the donors sent
them to the unknown m?jsionaries,
and as everything that came to the
church to be sent was jammed in
without care or discrimination,
the arrival of the box partook of
the nature of an insult to these
heroic, gently bred people. For
tunately this state of affairs is
not often found;, it ought never

from South Carolina of the national
Democratic committee, han again
telegraphed to Colonel Wilie
Jones, chairman of the South
Carolina Democracy, urging him
to rake a fund for the employment
of Bryau speakers. In response to
this appeal, Colonel Joi.es has
issued the following letter to
the chairmen of the county Demo
cratic executive committees :
