Increasing the Circulation.
Washington, D. C., March 22.
Comptroller of the Currency
Dawes and his force are working
hard to meet ihe demands for new
bank notes and the transfer of one
class of bonds in place of another
to secure circulation. The nation
al bank notes issued for six days
of last week were 85,641,950, and
those destroyed were only $1.183,
320. The net result was to in
crease the circulation on Saturday
to $-'57,998,687. This is an in
crease of $10,000,000 since Janua
ry 31, and $7,000,000 since Febru
ary 28. A considerable part o?
the increase in circulation is due
to the orders which are pouring in
upon the treasury for circulation
to par of bonds already pledged as
the baBis of circulation. The sum
of $2,030,600 in new bank notes
was shipped by the comptroller OE
Saturday, of which all but $300,
000 was for banks raising circula
tion to par. The circulation se
cured b}T bonds now stands si
$210,211,712, aud that secured bj
deposits of lawful money and in
procesE of retirement at $37,
886,975.
