THE ADVERTISER,
Edgefield, S. C.
Wm. J. Bryan, candidate for
President, isn't yet quite forty
years of age.
In tho past ten years the pro
duction of wheat has increased
53 per cent in*the south, and the
number of hogs raised there has,
during that period, nearly doubled.
It has been estimated that for
every dollar spent in this country
for spirituous and malt liquors
twenty cents ?B spent for tea and
coffee. Commenting on this fact,
a facetious Western paper says
that the amount of money squan
dered by the American people for
tea and coffee is really astonish
Commissioner Crum took charge
of the dispensary on 1st Maroh,
and announced" the following ap
pointments: K C Webb, clerk ;
GHyharles and M H Mobley,
book keepers ; W W Harris, con
stabulary clerk ; T C Dixon, Su
perintendent ; Jacob Earhardt,
assistant superintendent ; John
Black, shipping clerk.
The Memphis Scimetar says:
"The tendency of most doctrines is
tb be very narrow, and the loyalty
for a particular church, is bred in
the bone, as a certain little Mem
phis boy bearB witness. His moth
er was telling him of the childhood
of Christ and in the course of her
story said that Christ was a Jew.
The little fellow looked up at her
in wide-eyed astonishmint, and
said in an awed voice: 'Why,
mother, I always thought that the
Lord was a Presbyterian."
Mr. M. R. Smith, widely known
as "Uncle Matt," one of Saludad
oldest citizens, came very
bleeding to death one night re
cently before he himself or anyone
else was apprised of it. On awak
ening about 2 o'clock he found his
face, chest and shoulders reeking
wet. Making an alarm a light
was carried to his room and at first
blush it appeared that his throat
might have been cut, judging from
the pool of blood in which he wag
lying. FroTQ hi3 nose a tiny but
steady stream of blood was still
flowing. Medical aid was quickly
summoned and reached him just
in time to save MB life. He was
almost exhausted and on account
of old age his recovery will neces
sarily be slow. The bursting of
a small nasal artery was the oause
of the trouble.
. Abbeville rejoices in electric
lights. The PresB and Banner of
last week has the following to say
of the turning on : "Last Sunday
night the electric lights were turn
ed on for the first time, and our
people were greatly interested in
the sight. The town was lighted
up as it waB never before lighted.
Somebody raised the alarm of fire.
The hook and ladder company and
the hose reels turned out promptly,
and there was immediate doubt as
to which way to run. The alarm,
it is said, was caused by a sleeper
who was awakened and was aston
ished at the light. It is also said
that somebody galloped in from
the country, a distance of five
miles, expecting to see the whole
town afire.
JokiDg aside, the lights were
first-class and gave abundant satis
faction, except possibly on the
outskirts where there was an in
sufficient number of lamps.
At present the power is furnish
ed by Mr. Long, the plant being
located at his ginnery.
We are glad to see the succepE
of the young gentlemen who hav*
undertaken the contract for lighi
ing the town.
A Future Undertaking.
It is tee plain for dispute thal
the improvement of AmericaD
highways must be one of the greal
undertakings of the near future,
The country is disgraced and bt*d
ly handicapped by its poor road?
and it is too intelligent, rich and
energetic to endure much longei
the annoyance, waste and ecoro<
mic injury which can be tracee
directly to the- lamentable condi
tion of most of the highways ir
all sections.-Cleveland Leader.
