Tinamerroan and L. E. Jackson have just received a car load of corn each for sale to farmers. B. F. Glanton the old war horse of the west side was in town on Monday of this week, the first time in ten mouths. fj. An Epworth League society has been' organized in our Methodist church, for the benefit of the young people. Col. Pope Hagood was in town on Saturday. The Colonel still buys his unbleached goods from the Edgefield Cotton Factory. Ice will be cheap this summer from all indications., lt. is presumed our popular ice dealer^ Mr. M.A. Taylor, bas already put in his orders for num berless car loads. Mrs. Beni. Crocker of our town has removed to Due West, Abbeville coun ty, where she will permanently reside. She will be greatly missed by ber rela tives and friends. Rev. G. G Mayes leaves on town on Thursday to attend the meeting of Presbytery which meets at Mt. Leba non cburch in ADbeville county on April 7th instant. Bj common consent all our village churches were closed on Sunday night last and their respective congregations went to bear the gifted Dr. Thorn well at the Presbyterian cburch. Jinx Tillman is to apply for bail for the persons charged with shooting the two negro boys to death in our town some days since. This applica tion, we understand, will be held be fore Judge Watts. LATKR -Bail has been granted in the sum of $1,500 each to the five persons charged as afore said. The Augusta merchants have decided to give a Merry Makers' Week, to begin May 15th. The railroads have promised low rates to visitors, and street shows, fire works, and other attractions have been arranged for, and will doubtless draw large crowds of country folk up on pleasure bent. We call attention to Mr. L. E. Jack son's advertisement in this issue of the ADVBRTISBR. Mr. Jackson's card is full of good^thiags in the eating line, his fancy groceries are especially good things, and' ne deserves in this line, and is receiving, a generous patronage. Dr. Rushton's'speech in presenting the portrait of Dr. Henry Campbell Doughty to tho Medical college, at tracted much complimentary comment* A lady of discriminating judgment and literary Attainments, declared: "That man is a born orator."-Augusta Chronicle. . We wonder if that Dr. Rushton is not an Edgefield Rushton. We are all born orators when we are not born editors. Baptist Executive Board. The members of the Executive Board of the Edgefield Baptist Association, are earnestly requested to meet in tbe Baptist church, nt Edgefield, at 10 A. At a meeting <Df the citizens of Elm wood township,,toe following pream ble and resolutions was unanimously adopted : Whereas, On the night of January 3rd, last, Edmond Weaver, Allen Jones and Abner Harris did wantonly, and feloniously break into and rob the store ar.d Post Office kept by our fel tow citizen Mr. Jas. T. Ouzts Jr. Whereas, These aforesaid parties? after having been duly apprehended' tried, and convicted of the crime of burglary and larceny at the recent term of court held at Edgefield Court House; and they having been sentenc ed by Judge Watts to three years im prisonment at bard labor on the chain gang; after having had a fair impar tial trial before a jury composed of twelve (12) worthy, representative oitizens, (the overwhelming prepon derance of the evidence unmistakably proving their guilt,) and Whereas, Pending a motion for a new trial besore the Supreme Court on tbe flimsy pretext that some of the panel of jurors were constitutionally disqualified; and vt hile under sen tence, they; Abner Harris and Allen Jones, have by some "Hocuspocus," technicality, or subterfuge been bail ed, and taken from the custody of the Sheriff, and turned aloose on our com munity^ perhaps recommit their ne farious and infamous crimes, in utter disregard and defiance of the wishes, interest, and wellfare of the law abid ing good citizens of Elmwood town ship, who at no small sacrifice of time and trouble, have caused these guilty parties to be apprehended and brought to the bar of justice, and there convicted of this flagrant out rage. Therefore, be it Kesolved, by the citizens of Elm wood towdship, in mass meeting as sembled, that we enter our solemn and indignant protest against this palpa pable subversion of the law, and the ends of justice having been circumvented resultant from the course of the bondsmen of Abner and Allen Jones, which virtu ally nullifies the verdict of the jury, the sentence of the court, as well as the will of the people. We, therefore deem it our imperative duty as good law abiding citizens anxious to stamp out robbery and ; all other forms of crime, determined to? preserve and uphold la\? and order irr j this community, and protect our homes and property against the midnight marauder at all hazards. We, there fore declare and desire to put on re cord our emphatic disapproval and condemnation of these aforesaid bonds men, which we regard as a blow, at, and extremely detrimental to the good oi> der, safely, and welfare of our people, and calculated to encourage dishon esty amoug the colored race, as well as to paralyze the strong arm of the law ;n meting out justice and punish ment to guilty culprits. Simkins for the satisfactory, able, and vigorous manner with which they conducted the prosecution of this case.
