We beg, we implore, we urge-if we could we would deraaDd-thal our count}- supervisors give us good roads, better roads. This they can do if they will, and the people ex pect them to gi fe our public thor oughfares their especial attention. Other counties are up and moving in the good road matter, and Edge field should not be laggards in this important work. Up in Greenville, we notice, the county supervisors have now four road machines, at a cost of $220 each, at work on their highways, and much good work is being done by them. Why don't our Edgefield supervisors use road machines? THE COUNTY PENSION BOARD. This Board for Edgefield county^ consisting of Capt. H. B. Gallman, chairman, and Messrs. T. H. Clark, J. N. Fair and R. A, Cochran, with Dr. F. W. I*. Butler, as examining physician, will meet at Edgefield, on Wednesday, the 15th of March, to r3ceive and act upon applica tions for pensions. All per sons in anywise concerned, should be prompt in send ing in their applications to their respective township boards, and township boards should be equally prompt m reporting to the county board at their meeting on the 15th iust. See instructions from the State Board, clear and definite, as published in another column. . LET THE FARMER PRACTICE WHAT HI PREACHES. If those prominent farmers and planter who are continually harp ing about cotton States' conven tions to discue3 the cotton acre age and production, would individ ually practice vrhat they preach, their preaching would -doubtless have a good influence in their re spective neighborhoods. It has been suggested that the quickest way to get the palmetto tree from its present degrading position on the dispensary bottles is for everybody who gets hold of one of these bottles to promptly smash it.-Greenville News. But. the News should remember that that dispensary bottle is .worth a half cent at the dispen sary-and that, with the average whiskey drinker, even that insig. nificant sum -ill more than coun ter-balance any supposed senti ment in the premises. We are sorry that sentiment is at so low an ebb, but it is thus all the same. Japanese Seed Rice Free. The Cien- .son College experiment station has 10 bags of Japanese seed rice for distribution to plan ters for experimental purposes. Out of a total of 200 bags procured by the government. 10 were aliottedto this State. The seed may be procured by addressing President Henry S. Hartzog or Col. J. S. Newman, professor of agriculture. Washington, March 4.-Senator Tillman aud Representative Lati mer have completed all the ar rangements for a Congressional excursion to South Carolina, Geer gia, Florida and Cuba. The project has been under wa)' for some time past, but it did not take definite shape until to-day, when all the Congressmen invited anuounced their readiness to proceed to the Southlaud at once. Representa tive Latimer, who originated the trip and has worked industriously to make it a success, says the party wjll leave Washington next Mon day night in a special car attached to the regular train. The first stop will be at Greenville and then Co lumbla, lt is proposed to spend Thursday and Thursday night in Charleston, for many of the guests are particularly anxious to visit that. city. From Charleston the parly will proceed to Savannah, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Rock ledge, Tampa and then to Cuba for a few days in Havana. Besides Senator and Mrs. Till man and Representative and Mrs. Latimer the party will consist of Representative and Mrs. Joseph A. Connolly, Illinois; Mr and Mrs J.Hamilton Lewis, Wasbingtou; Mr and Mrs Joseph B. Shjwalter, Pennsylvania; Mr ai d Mrs Johu F. Sbafroth, Colorda; Mr and Mrs W. S. Cowherd, Mr and Mrs C. F. Cochran, Mr and Mrs D. A. De Arrcond, Missouii, and Represen tative and Mrs Norton. The ob ject of tne trip i? to allow the members of the party to make per sonal observations of the South and its resources and its require ments. Nearly all of the Congress men invited are re-elected to the next Congress, and it is believed that all of the States to be visited will eventually be benefited by the better understanding of the condi tions of the people and the require mellis of the South. .
