Phil Waters, of Johnston, was with us an hour or two on Monday Jast-an octogenarian though he is, yet he says that consid ering the hard times, and ?the coli snow storm times, arid the prohibition times in and around Johnston, he is doing amazingly well; and thus he seeraeth to us, and we are glad. He told us though that Capt. Lake had "sworn off' again, and in February at that, and was not as exuberant as usual?, and we were sad. From our very brief experience in the swearing off matter, we don't believe that as a general thing February is a good month to make any solemn vows-especially in a prohibi tion town. The entertainment given in the Opera House, last Thursday nigut, for the benefit of the S. C. C. I. Cadets, was a grand success in a pecuniary way, because the bouse was crowded almost to its utmost capacity with the best people of the town. And the music-vocal, pit.no, string band and brass band-was fairly creditable, and enjoyed by the audience. But Prof. Brown'sjlecture on '.Kissing," whicb/ as every one thought, was, to be the chief feature of the occasion, proved a painful failure-a regular "bust" on the part of Prof. Brown. And now when mention is made concerning the Brown lecture on "Kissing," the boys say "Rats"-but what that means we knoweth not. C. I. building we observe the white flag flying: this, Tuesday, morning, which assures us that Prof. Bailey, of the Institute, is uow in charge of the Signal Service Bureau at this place. We are delighted at this, and hereafter the Professor with his flags will give us regular forecasts of tue weather. Good for Prof. Bailey. The White Flag indicates fair weather; Blue Flag, rainror snow; White Flag with Black Centre, cold wave; Black Flag, storm. Our Colored Methodists Getting a Move on Them. We are glad to see that the Wesleyan Burial Aid Society, an organization in connection with the colored Meth ! odist church, of our town, are erecting a Society Hall on the northeastern corner of the Allen Harris, or baseball lot-a beautiful situation. The build ing will be two stories high, forty feet long and thirty wide, and is being built by Nathan Seignious, a compe tent colored man, and one who we feel assured will give bis employers a good job. The ends and aims of the Society are commendable, and we congratulate them on the probability of their soon having a suitable hall for their so ciety meetings. Our Editor Off Again. Some weeks ago, our Editor, claim ing to be an invalid, packed his kit and had himself checked for the Sur gical Institute, Atlanta, whither he tarried as long as the conscience of the honest folks of that "cure all" in. stitution could or would allow him to remain-and he came home sound and well-and all right for a big job at bard work. But, in our opinion, he is not fond of very hard work-and now he is off agaiu. Gone this time ona strictly pleasure excursion to Beaufort county-and to see his brother Quincy Adams, who is at present treasurer of of Beaufort county-and to hunt ducks -and to shoot deer-and (to kill bear and to capture a wild cat for Sam Tay lor-and the Lord knows what other achievements he will perform before he returns. And his furlough is unT limited-and we don't know when he may return. But all the while he has our prayers in his behalf-and a happy time generally for our absent Editor. A two or three weeks' course of Dr. M. A. Simmons Liver Medicine will so Regulate the Excretory Functions that they will operate without any aid whatever. An English View-of Uncle Sam's Policy as to the Philippines. The Reynolds Newspaper, oi London, a paper of prominence, un?er date of Feb. 12th says: The outrageous treaty of peace between the United States and 3-v??w ban been ratified, partly bj it' they did noe support the Presi dent, and a sufficient number have been weak enough to yield. The other factor in deciding the Senate at the last moment was the outbreak by the Filipino in surgents. We call this a trick. It may be wondered how it came to pass that the insurgents so obviously played into the hands of the reluctant Senators. A Router's special telegram gives the reason : "The reports of serious fighting at Manilla are false. There has only been, a skirmish between outposts, due to the delib erate and overt act of Americans, designed to provoke hostilities be fore the final voto in the Senate to-day." That was, **>f course, before the battle took place in which the Americans slew 4,000 natives, who were fighting for the very principles which the Ameri cans themselves stated in the De claration of Independence. The design was plain-provoke a riot, provoke the people to fire cu American soldiers, and be sure that the contemptible feeling which-masquerades as "patriotism" will berouied, and the thing which wise men hesitated about doing will, under the feelings thus stirred, be done. It is known that the vote for the treaty bungin the balance; a convenient outbreak was ar ranged to tum the scale on the Jingoside. A more outrageous business than this of the Philippines even we have rarely been guilty of. America goes to war for Cuba. Instead of st'eking to her proper business she allows an admiral to sail^away to the Philippines, which were not involved, and where insurgeuts were fighting and j beating the Spanish troops. This admiral is allowed to remain there long after his pretended mission of destroying the Spanish fleet is accomplished. A.treaty is made j on the basis of a protocol which only recognizes American rights in the bay city of Manilla, and yet, while that treaty is being discussed, before it is ratified, the American troops are allowed to treat the whole of the Philippines as though they were American property, and the President treats the natives as though they wore his subjects, quite in the style of an Emperor. But we have not heard the last, of this treacherous conduct that makes the great Declaration of Independence a mockery. First, ? the treaty must be ratified iii the Spanish Cortes, and it may be de feated there. In the next place, the American House of Repres entatives may not vote the needful .-ifttions for carrying on of the United Stales have yet to be heard from. They have had no clear opportunity of expressing anopiuion on this vile betrayal of Republican principls. Next year the Presidential election will take place. We trust that it may result in the consignment of Mr McKinley and his crowd of mill ionaires and officials into the limbo of vanity and oblivion. Dr. M. A. There is an old gentleman,, Hay den by Dame, who professes to be a miner and ie, working in that capacity in this county. Om last Saturday the old gentleman had taken ou a little too much of the "chemically pure" and wa? going some distance in the country on al prospecting tour. He met two young men, Will and Butler Holdt, whom he pprs?aded to act as guide. Perhaps the old gentleman had "been searching for gold so mauy years that bis dreams both while awake and > asleep were golden ; and especially so while under the influence of the "mellow wine*' or what is perhaps better known as the "chemically pure." At any rate his speech must have convinced the young men that he carried gold somewhere else thac in his head, and feeling a sympathy for the old man offered tb ,carry his miner's hammer for him with which they proceeded to knock him in the head and discovered to their dismay that his gold, was all a dream or some other shadowy substance which could not be utilized. At leaBt that is the story that is going the rounds, and we can only vouchsafe for the fact that the two young men were lodged in jail on Saturday night for the alleged robbery. The colony of Fitzgerald, in Irwin county, Ga., is in a flourish ing condition, as shown by Presi dent Filizgerald, of the colon}' company. His report shows thal the company bas a margin of $109,451 above all debts after the stock is retired. It is stated to be the purpose o' Mr. Fitzgerald, so'far as he can influence the affairs of the company in future, to employ all the surplus assets in founding charitable institutions for patriotic societies and in building churches, libraries and schools. The enterprize was well conceived and ably managed. Mr. Fitzgerald has erected for himself an enduring monument; and one of the best that a man could have.: Georgia is proud of his city, anti hopes there will be others of his' kind to come into the state and du-? .plicate his success.
