Is a lunch tax to be added to the already burdensome school tax? On Saturday last our town was sbockei at the news that Mrs. Ella Mays, wife of Col. S. B. Mays, waa dead. This report, we are glad to say, proved incorrect, aud this popular ano beloved lady is now almost out of danger, and probably on the high road to re covery. A Greenwood man contributes this story to current small pox literature. In 1867 hie family lived in Edgefield District. A stray cat came to his house, broken out with pustules and m a short while his family took smallpox. Pie is sure that thc cat brought them the disease, as they had no other opportunity to contract it. Mr. J. E. Swoaringin, the talent ed son of Mrs. Anna Swearingen. in the mid-term examination in the South Carolina College was marked "Highly distinguished in j all of his studies," instecd of high ly distinguished in some and dis linghed in others, as wc published ii last week. The phenomenal stand Mr. Swearingen has taken is all the more remarkable because he ?9 toi ally blind. A TEACHER WANTED-The Gil gal school, on the west side of Edgefield county wishes to secure forthwith a lady teacher <;f expe rience and good references. Ap ply to W. The statistical table in the minute? of the South Carolina Bapiist Convention shows ? total white membership of 92,593; an increase during the year of 5,304 by baptism, 712 by restoration; munies raised for all purpose?, $195,632,27; total value of church properly, 1,04S,057; number ol churches, 896; Sunday schools, 667 with 4,670 teachers and officers, 40,338 pupila, and contributions amounting to $4,604,85. We have had a good many cases of chicken pox in Edgefield, but no smallpox, but smallpox is all around us. Atlanta, Greenville, Beaufort, Orangeburg, and yer, st rango to pay, there has not been a single deatn from smallpox in either of the places named, so the physicians say. Many of the doc tors insist positively that the dis eate is smallpox, while others maintain that it is not, and that there are several eruptive diseases that may be mistaken for small pox, one of these is known in Africa and o'her parts of the world as "elephant's itch." A Word to Pensioners. Clerk John B. Hill has received the following letter from the pen sion department: COLUMBIA, S. C., Jan. 10, '98. The only change in the directory is the addition of the name of Capt. J. A. Bennett as one of the directors in place of James M. Seignious. The showing made by the bank is au excellent one, as the following figures indicate: $104,151.88 are the loans, $62,624.82 are the deposits, quite a notable increase from the last statement, which gave $92,968.38 as th? loans and $49,370.06 as the desposite. The dividend declared this year is 7 per cent, besides the laying aside of $6SS.04 to the surplus fund, making m all an earning on stock of more than S per cent. ST. Douglass Timinerman. Mr. N. D. T.mmerman, after a brief illness, died at his home near Pleasant Lane on Saturday last Mr. Timmerman was the second son of the late Rausom Timmer man and a brother of the Hon. \V. H. Timmerman, State Treasurer. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Tillman Padgett, a widow and eleven chil dren, nine sons and two daughters, to mourn their loss. Dug Tim merman was a good s )ldier in the times that tried men's souls, and since the war he has made an ex cellent citizen. Pie was a kind and indulgent husband and father, and hospitable in his home. His re mains were laid away with Ma sonic honors in the church yard at Berea, of which church he was a member, on Sunday last. Peace to his ashes. Mrs. Rosa Hill. Died, in North Augusta, at the home of her sister BerTa, Dec. 28th, 1897, Rosa, the beautiful and beloved wife of Henry L. Hill. Her once happy homo has been darkened by the shadow of death. For weary months she was a gr?at sufferer from that fatal disease consumption, but through it all she bore her pain with heroism. Many loving friends surrounded her, who weep over this young life, ended so soon. Her five children will miss mamma for a long time. The wee baby is left to the tender care of a loving sister. Between the death of an old year and the birth of a new, her fair young life went out, and re turned to God, who gave it. Fare well, Rosa, youn^ and lovely, may we meetyou on the brighter shore "Seest thou in the red dawn Hearest thou in the early morn The angels song? Resolutions of Abner Perrin Camp on the death of Gen. John son Hagood : Whereas, The sad intelligence comes to us from Barnwell, S. C., of the death of Gen. Resohed, That in the death of this brave and intrepid soldier, the United Confederate Veterans of South Casolina have lost an other useful and public spirited member, and one who was devoted o the interest of ull Confederate veterans and who never failed when an opportunity offered to meet and minglo with the survi vors of Iiis old comrades-who fol lowed where he led-in their re unions. Though dying in the enjoyment of a peaceful and quiet home-lite which he loved so well, after so many years of usefulness to his State, which he served so gallantly in the war as one of her bravest and most chivalrous commanders, ?nd no lens renowned and distin guished in pence lor tho ability and fidelity with which ho dis charged the duties of Comptroller and afterwards Governor to which he had been called by the confi dence of his people. And the State mourns his death as a mother for one of her noblest and truest sons. And the Conf?d ?ral survivors of Edgefield will mingle their teais of sorrow with those of Barnwell over the bier of this gallant and devoted soldier. Resolved, That we extend to the relatives of our lamented comrade our heart-felt sympathies, and that the Adjutant of this Camp forward to the bereaved family a copy of these resolutions. W. D.
