H. Peu Tifoy and James E. Peurifoy were .examined before the Supreme Court of this State last week for admittance to the bar, and passed the breakers triumphantly. We believe these,young gentlemen will locate at Saluda. Mrs. W. J. McKerall and Miss Kate Shaffer, who have been at Edgefield during the past year, have ereturned, and are staying with Mrs. E. W. Mullins, and will spond most of their time with Mrs. C. A. Durham. Mr. C. A. Durham will purchase the Mc Kerall residence.-Marion Star. I Small pox prevails in Atlanta and there isa rumor that there are cases of this disease in Greenwood. In this juncture it would be the part ol wisdom to vaccinate every where, especially in the schools. The Encyclopaedia Brit t?nica says : "Small pox is probably the most contagious of all diseases." Merry children are counting the days; the historio turkey is walking up and down in his narrow confines, ?ejoicing in his feast prepared. Times hard? Cotton low? Yes; but Christmas is almost here. We must all be happy once a year. The Lord's ad vent must be celebrated. As you gaze into the windows, and select ?or yourselves and children, as with eager anticipation you prepare for the festive time do you call to mind that many are looking wistfully and coldly at the things which may not be theirs? Did Christ bid those only rejoice who could provide for their own? Must not the little waif who stands trembling on the street, must he not have some of the good cheer of the sea son? All will celebrate iu som? way tne coming advent. "The poor you have always with you." When in high heaven, you listen to the chimes of the cathedral bells ap they caji the saints to Christmas tide, when you hear celestial harps accompany the carol of the blest, no opportunity shall be presented to administer comfort to the needy. Now is the time when charity, that virtue which places in the crown its brightest star, now is the only opportunity for its dispens ing. The Advertiser was the first newspaper I evor remember read ing or seeing. I read it for years, both in South Caroliua and Texas. I am now an old diseased, broken down and crippled Confederate soldier, and have no way to make any money, but would oe greatly pleased if you will send me the Advertiser occasionally, or regu larly, as I still like to hear the news of my native State. Many of the paperB in Texas and other States send us their paperp regularly and which is highly ap preciated and there are other Caro linians here at the C. S. Chapman's History of Edgefi el Criticized, With au Interesting Account of the Battles in Which Co. B, 6th S. C. C. Was Engaged. EDITOR ADVERTISER : A friend has placed in my hands a copy of Chap man's History of Edgefield, in which I propose to correct some errors that I see in regard to Cu.B, 6th S. C. Cav alry, as 1 belonged to that command and commanded it at the close of the war. 1 joined Co. B in March, 1S63. It was then detached from the regiment and stationed about one mile below the Charleston and Savannah R. R. inCol leton District. Capt. Lewis Jones was then in command; a short time after he resigned and J. J. Gregg became captain. The company remained near Jacksonboro detached from the regi ment till first of May, 1864, when it moved to Virginia with the regiment. During its stay in Colleton District VV. H. Briggs and Charles Glanton were captured while doing picket duty on Ashepoo river. They were ex changed late in the summer of 1864 so broken in health that Glanton died in Richmond aud Briggs never joined the company any more, Archy Funder burg died at that camp. During the company's stay in this State it was in only one engagement. Two of the enemy's gunboats ascended Edisto river and were repulsed by two guns of Capt. Water's battery. Co. B was then under fire of the enemy's guns before and after Capt. "Waters arrived with his gun3. He soon drove the enemy back, one of the boats was so crippled that the enemy set it on fire and abandoned it. No one of Co. B was hurt in this fracas. Arrived in Virginia late in May. On 11th June, early in the morning, Butler's brigade, to which the 6th Reg iment belonged, attacked Sheridan's army near Trevillian station driving them some distance. For want of sup port we were flanked and bad to re treat. In this day's fight J. Wiley Moyer, (Chapman has it Mayers) was killed. E. V. Steadman severely wound ed, shot through the body ; Capt. Gregg wounded in the arm. The next day, Sunday, June 12th, the enemy attacked us behind a railroad ?mbankment and temporary breastworks, after driving in our skirmish line, killing ii. E Padgett, W. B. Brooks and breaking S. E. Mays' thigh. This engagement be?;an about 1 o'clock p. m. and .lasted till night, during which time the enemy charged us seven different times, but failed to dislodge us. Dur ing this fight, beside those already mentioned, John Moss and his brother Matt Moss and Bill Claxton were kill ed, Abner Bushnell, W. D. Rountree, Sergeant A. JST. Giles, (Giles mortally wounded), Richard Berry, Press Wil liams, Sergeant Sam Cothran, all se verely wounded, and probably others, several slightly wounded, in the two days light 31 were killed and wounded. J. W. Noble, Sam Blackwell and prob ably others were captured. Mr. Chapman has it in his book that W. H. Mays lost a leg at Trevillian. Comrade Billy has two good legs now, thorgh old. He was sick at hospital during that battle and was not in it. A few days later near New Kent C. H., (1 believe it was), William Holloway and T. E. Seago were severely wound ed. James Briggs died of disease in Richmond. The company was often engaged till near the close of 1864, bu.' had no other casualties. In January, 1865, Butler's Brigade came to Columbia, S. C., to oppose Sherman in his destruction of the country. While on picket below Co lumbia a few days before it was burn ed, Sergt. W. H. Winn was killed. At the surprise of Kilpatrick's camp, 17 miles west of Fayetteville, N. C., Sergt. S. G. Cothran and David Quarles were killed; G. W. Broadwater and Tom Lanham severely wounded, and Thos. E. Seago mortally wounded. Mr. Chap man calls this place Catfish Creek, I 6aw no creek there, nor never heard the name before. Two da j's later while reconoitering; on east side of Cape Fear river, below Fayetteville, C. M. Adams was killed. I guess it was 17tb ll arch. Thos. Williams was killed near Bur gess Mill in Virginia, November, *864. Killed in battle ll : mortally wound ed 2, and about as many more severely wounded, say 15. Mr. Chapman has, wounds not mortal 5. When the company was ordered to Virginia in 1864 it numbered about 150, rank and file, it was required to reduce its number to SO rank and file. The roll that Mr. Chapman gives is VERY incorrect. He has names that 1 never heard of being in the company before. G. W. Crawford's name is not there while the names of W. B. Crane, J. H.Ellis, .Tillman S. Hudson, M. K. M??ale, W. E. Middleton, Geo. Rump, I never heard of being members. I forget to mention David Plunkett as being among the killed. John Perry should be John Terry. Abe Gilchrist was captured at Trevillian and W. E. Gilchrist at Kilpatrick's camp. Wood Mays? Charles Roper and Lewis Gian ton diod at home. James M. Holden should be James M. Holder. There is much of the history of this part of Edgefield not mentioned in Chapman's history. In January, 18-5, a company commanded by William Olde, was called from this immediate neighborhood to Sister's Ferry on Sa vannah river, near the city of Savan nah, to serve against the British; they returned in three months. Gaines of the Augusta Chronicle was in tho city on Saturday and in addition to work ing for his paper is enthusiastic in his efforts to build the Augusta, Edgefield, and Newberry road. He told us if tt certain legal technicality was out of the way the road would be built. We hope that Col. George Johnstone, the vice-president, will go to work to remove the technicality and thal within a twelve month we may have trains running between Newberry and Augusta via Saluda. This road is almost graded and th" Cumberland Gap would furnish the rolling stock. From what we gathered from Mr. Gaines if th? road bed could be secured the road would be built.-Newberry Herald and News. Advertised Letters.
