Edsrefield Advertiser TJ'OS. J. ADAMS,.EDITO? WEDNESDAY, OCT. 20. CHATFIELD VS. TALBERT. The committee of Congress hav ing iii charge the duty of investi gating and reporting on the merits of the contested election case of Chatfield against Talbert, Second Congressional District of South Carolina, meet in Washington, D. C., to-day, Oct. 20th, for the pur pose of such investigation. Messrs. Sheppard Bros., of our local bar, had in charge the preparation of the brief in this case. We have had the privilege of reading this brief, and Mr. Talbert made a wise choice iu the selection of his at torneys for that work. 'This paper, while eminently fair to the con testant, Mr. Chatfield, presenting all the facts and the law claimed by him as favorable to his side of the case, even to elaboration, is yet so convincing as to the abso lute futility of the contest that the merest tyro can see, understand and appreciate it. And yet the argument is not specious or tech nical in the remotest degree, bu! full, fairaud frank; it is, indeed, rather the argumeut of a states man than a lawyer. We cannot see how the committee can hesi tate as to their report, and Messrs. Sheppard Bros. may be congratu lated in advr.nce as to the result, which will be, without doubt, in favor of tho contest?e, W. J. Tal hert-and Mr. Talbert is to be congratulated, and Edgefield coun ty as well. LOTS OFT1?E3I. An expert, who is not astonished at these stories, says : ''Nobody who has not been in the northwest can have any notion of the awful inrush of salmon (turing a very big year like the present. A single illustration from my personal knowledge may Bllffice. On one occasion I crossed a tributary of the Fraser river literally over r. bridgy of salmon. The fish were dead and had begun to putrify. Forced from the main stream into the tributary by the terrific legions of? upgoing fish behind, they were driven into a long reach where the water grew shallow and the rocky bauks were very narrow. Justice Field of the Supreme Court of the United States has re tired from the bench. The nine venerable justices com possing the court form an august and imposing spectacle. Robbers in tho Weft arc becom ing a3 formidable as the banditti of Italy. A few days ago four of them stopped a train, shot the conductor, robbed the express car and passengers and escaped with their booty. There has been more or le.*8 talk lately to the effect that Congress man Tal'>ert would be a candida IP next year for Governor against Ellerbe. Shotgun quarantine pre vails, and an almost complete blockade has resulted. There is now considerable com ment on the fact that wheat fiour| and corn meal mixed aro sold as flour. Some mill people seem to have learned a seeret whereby they can mix the two to a certain degree without detection. And those who know about the manipulation are not willing to make known the proportion in which meal and flour may be mixed and escape detection. Perhaps a larg quantity of flour in all the markets has corn meal in it. A banker of New Mexico, out of patience with the Indianapolis commission, calls attention to some facts worth recording at this time. He Bays : "Look at the vast amount of silver that is daily beiug shipped to London* The ma3s of readers do not keep track of it, but nearly every day hundreds of thousands of ounces of the white metal are exported from New Yoik.
