MART CANTELOU ERUNSON On laBt Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock the sad and grief-stricken friends of Mrs. Arthur Branson gathered in the Baptist Church to pay their loving tribute, to her memory. In bpite of the exceed ingly inclement weather, many from country and town were pres ent. Mrs. Branson was the only daughter of the late Rainsford Cantelou, Esq., and Mrs. Mary Cantelou. Fourteen months ago Mrs. Branson was married, at her home by Rev. J.- P. Mealing, who also received nor confession ??of faith ia her Saviour many years ago, and also officiated with the assistance-of Dr.. L. R. Gwajtney, at her funeral ceremonies.: His) words wore full of comfort to the* bereaved, and an inspiration to a better arid more useful life to all who listened to them. Mrs: Bran son was beloved with intense de votion bykher husband, brothers, and mother, for she was a woman of tender sympatriie3, anvl full of loving deeds, and self-sacrificing love for those about her. But so it seems good in His sight, and who can question the wisdom of the Almighty, for His ways are past finding out. The Edgefield Baptist Association meets at Gilgal on ?Sept 8. The Bidge Association will meet at Bed Bank ou Sept 14. The picnic of the Edgefield Hussars will be on Thursday the 29th of July instead of August 5th as heretofore announced. - Peach ?rowers around Bidge Spring are receiving good returns from their shipments. Watermelons are not in it this season. , ? A cool week in August is usually looked for, aut the cool week in July to which we have been ^treated was a pleasant surprise. Cotton sold for eight cents in Au gusta a few days ago. We trust the price will no?, fall before the general harvesting of the erop. Mr J. A. Boper, of Augusta, a native of Edgefield county, has disappeared from his home, and up to date there is no clue to his whereabouts. The Bev. W. T. Mathews is conduct ing a series of meetings in our village Presbyterian church much to the spiritual edification of our people. Our young and talented friend! John H. EDITOR: As you well know each, county is entitled to one Sen. ator-no more nor no less-and yet virtually Greenwood has two Senators and E?ge?el? none. And that is not as it should be. Yet some people-^people with a mo tive perhaps-say that we had bet ter let the "Greenwood gentlemen" ' hold their Edgefield offices; that said ''gentlemen" will do as well as any, and that to hold another election will be trouble and ex pense for nothing. Out upon such reasoning. It is, not right for a Greenwood man to hold an Edge field office and make laws for the Edgefield people, and no amount of argument can make it right and if it is not right, why we as a free people should battle for the right until tho wrong is remedied. And th? miserable bosh that a Greenwood man can represent us as well as an Edgefield man, is a doctrine altogether against com mon eense and the rights of the people. Therefore, so, long as the "Greenwood gentlemen" Gain?e and Yeldell, refuge to give up their illegally held offices, so long ought the people denounce them as vain Pretenders and arrogant Usurpers. Thus you see the race is entirely with white republicans. As for Edgefield P. 0. we 'iave only two applicants, viz.: W. D. Ramey and T. A. Odom. Rev. Mr. Matthews is conduct ing a protracted service here this week, aud in all probability the meetings will'be continued for sev eral days. Rev. J. V. Krepps will com mence a protracted meeting at Sweetwater to-day, and will con tinue all the week, and th? pro tracted meeting at Republican has been put off until the 5th Sunday in August on account; of the uuion meeting, which will be held there on the 5th Saturday and Sunday, Mr. James Reece, who conduct? a wheelwright and blacksmith business at this place, has been quite sick during the past week, but we are glad he is much im proved at this writing, and it is hoped that he will soon be out again. Mr. M. D. Lyon and two of his lovable daughters, Missos Lillia and Minnie, went to the barbecue and picnic at Alliance Hall last Thursday. Quite a number from this section went down also. Judge John Glover has just suc ceeded in felting up a baseball nine at this place, which will be> ready to play any of the boys in a short time. I am told that the team is composed of blacksmiths, lawyers, farmers, millers, clerks, doctors and a judge. Mr. J. F. Atkins will umpire the games, and the above team, Mr. Editor, ex pects to play everything from the Gulf of Mexico to "mumble peg." Politics are being talked round right smart nowadays. I think it would be a good id9a for some one to invent some plan by which poli tics could be run by water power. Seems to me it would beat the gas arraugement used for the past few years. Mrs. J. F. Atkins, who has been sick for sometime, is much im proved. The ice cream festival to bo given here next Saturday night will be a grand success beyond doubt. The Lyon band will fur nish music for the occasion. Miss Mattie Lyon, who plays a B flat cornet, will play some nice cornet selections on that night, and we expect a large crowd. PARATUS. Ropers, S. C., July 10. A Card. MR. EDITOR: Will you please help us to correct a false rumor about the Baptist parsonage at Ropers, S. C., by publishing the following: We hear that it is rumored and circulated over the country that the ti tles to the laud on which the parsonage is located are not good. We say that it is absolutely false and that there are no grounds for said rumor. We expected to have some op position to this work when we be gan it, for no one has ever done anything that would please every one. But we did not expact oppo sition in such a hidden scheming manner. We were prompted by pure motives when we began the work, and hope that it may be a great blessing to the churches around it.
