The next Edgefield marriage, booked
for consummation at an early u..y, is
that of a retired capitalist with money
to burn, who. having reached the full ?
meridian of his years and usefulness,
the very top of the hill, does'nt propose
to go down to the bot rom alone; one
who, when a little boy as the tradi
tion goes, coralled all the Cardinal j
Virtues threw salt on their tails and
caught every blessed one of 'em. We !
do cot know how he caught 'em, but
we do know that he bas 'em caught,
and holds 'em hard and fast.
Rev. Edward T. Walker.
The sudden death of this venerable
minister of the Gospel, Tuesday night,
:n Beaufort, was a great shock. Mr.
Walker was in Port Royal this week?
and preached eloquently in the Free
Church Sunday morning and evening,
the text in the evening, his last, being
'Your life is hid with Christ in God,"
Colossians, III, 3. The last hymn be
ing "Rock of Ages." His address to
the Sunday-school and, in fact, all the
services were very impressive. Mon
day morning he paid tne Post a short
visit. He complained that he was not
stall welland looked very feeble. He
went up to Beaufort, where he was
taken worse, and departed suddenly
as above. The older people of Port
Royal have ever bada warm place in
their heat for Mr. Walker. He was the
first minister preaching in this town,
and forsome time conducted services in
a car. For 50 years he had been a
priest of the Protestant Episcopal
Church. His services partook in late
years of the missionary character,
though he was connected with the
church at Wando, and was over in this
country on a visit to his son, Mr. E. B,
Walker, of Jericho, and friends in
Beaufort and Port Royal. His death
occurred at the Beaufort House, where
he was stopping for the night. Mr.
Walker only lacked a few weeks of be
ing 80 years of age. Ha leves an aged
widow and a son and daughter to
mourn his death. The funeral services
were held ia St. Heiena Church yes
terday afternoon in the presence of a
large congregation. Rev. Robert Wilson
read the burial services, and the re
mains were interred in the church
yard. The choir, a strange coinci
dence, sang the very last hymn Mr.
Walker gave out in the Free Church
Sunday, "Kocks of \ges."
