Evans has declined to al low Columbia its share in the dis pensary profits, on the ground that the city government has not done its duty in squelching the blind tigers. The constitutional convention raised the limit for paying poll ?axes from fifty to sixty years, I mt all Confederate veterans o ; er fifty years of age are exempt frc m the tax. Owing to the outbreak of measles among the cadets, demean College : was forced to close, last week, two weeks earlier than the usual date for the winter vacation. Allen G. Thurman, of Ohio, died at his home in Columhtis last week, eged eighty-five years. He was designated by friend and-foe alike, the noblest Hanan of them fd. Congressman Talbert has in troduced a joint resolution enjoin ing ihe Secretary of the Treasury from th? further issue of bonds and directing him to coin the seigniorage from the uncoined sil ver m the treasury, amounting to about $55,000,000. ' The taxes in this township are 13 per cent less than they were last year. If this reduction is general and not confirmed to this bailiwick, it is one of the feathers that we have for some time been trying to Stick in the reform administration cap. Prof. Hicks, the weather prog nisticator of St. Louis, predicts that the month of Jauuary will be a swinger \ for cold, and advises people, even in the South to "pro qvide ountifully against a severe winter and great cold." This is good advice whether tho severe weather and great cold comes or not. The State Board of Control has increased the price of liquor in dispensaries, very much to the gratification of? everybody except those who want to get. drunk on ten cents. We hope they will go to increase the price for in that is" the approximation to prohibition, and that, approximation is ail we can hope for. An Important Matter. One very important matter to come up at the next session of the Legisla ture, which meets on the 14th January next, is the matter of the funding or refusing to fund the $106,000 of State bonds alleged to have been owned and lost by the old defunct State Bank, ap plication for such funding having been made by Samuel Lord, Receiver of said State Bank. This very stale claim of Mr. Lord, Receiver, has been pending a long j while and has been passed upm ad versely by two successive Legisla tures; but not content with repeated .'downings" it bobs up serenely again and again. We have seen both reports of the committee appointed by.the House of Representatives at its )ast session. 4The majority report favors j and the minority report is adverse to the claim, and of the two, in our hum ble judgment, the minority report is unquestionably the sounder and bet ter. J. Wm. Thurmond, Esq., of Edge-1 field makes this minority report and it is a subject of congratulation, nc nly to Edgefield, but to the whole State that so sound a lawyer and'so honest a legislator holds the helm in this busi ness. We are satisfied that the House will adopt Mr. Thurmond's views of this whole matter and repudiate and justly repudiate the claim. Weather for November. Weather Observer C. A.
