Harrison Butler, living at the old Bob Butler place, two miles this side of Augusta, made ninety-eight bushels of corn per acre on twenty acres. DURISOK, Agt. Under a recent law trial justices have the authority to sentence male factors to the chain gang-that is to say, work on the public roads. But some trial justices in this county who have rendered sentences have failed to notify Supervisor Whittle of such sen tences. Senator Butler has made live barrels of cane syrup as toll for the use of his ' mill this season. Dr. Frank Butler? however, says he doesn't kuow what in the world to do with it, as he knows he can't sell it, and he doesn't feel equal to the task of sopping it all himself, and isn't quite willing to give it away. On the whole Frank believes the profit in the sorghum business is in there fuse, the ground up cane after the lengthened sweetness has long been rawn out of it, for it makes a splendid erial with which to stop washes. , Received this week at New Yorl Racket Store woolen dress good: warm blankets, outings, flannels am prints. Some people think that big sleeves are going out, but Betsy Hamilton, the Georgia writer, says it is a mistake. Thinking to be in the height of style she went to the Exposition in a dress with tight sleeves and when she got there found every other woman with sleeves so large they had to go side ways in and out of the doors. An old farmer up in Anderson conn, ty says "this fall up to date is like the fall of 1856, when it was so dry tha^ corn was ready to gather October 1st. The Year Book makes no distinction, but the New York Inde pendent numbers the Baptists in the South at 1,3S7,060. The Year Book does not separate the white and color ed members. The total number of col" ored members enumerated by the In dependent is placed at 1,292,394, the great body of whom are in the South ern States. Friend Spann Barr planted his rice on the 2ist of May, rather late, and he only got it cut (being ripe enough) before a :freeze by the skin of his teeth. He says he saw in the ADVERTISKR that rice could be planted as late as the 20th May and he followed that ad vice. Of course if you see it in the ADVKRTIHKR its SO even if it is so by a close rub. However it is best not to make such close rubs; you might, as friend Arthur Tompkins would say, 'strike a stump and rub off the nose band." Photographs. Does the Edgefield Delegation in thc Constitutional Convention Represent the Sentiments of Edgefield County on the New County Question? If Not, What Are They There For? EDITOR ADVERTISER : You aud [your readers will, wo know, pardon us for consuming space in your in teresting columns when we raise our humble voice in behalf of old Edgefield County. A grave condi tion confronts us. As a matter of right and justice the people have with one uccord championed the cause of Saluda County. The citi zens of that section were entitled to a new county and we freely gave it to them, although at a great sacrifice. But must we permit the relic of a once proud county to be totally dismembered? Greenwood, McCormick, Ninety-Six, Troy, and Batesburg are clamoring for our most fertile fields and richest sec tions-audit is time-high time I-that a protest should be filed. As a broad principle we favor smaller counties-but our county is now small enough. Edgefield has set the example; '.et other counties follow. But do not snatch from us all we have. Let not the old county-the mother of the "smaller county" scheme, ever re gret the hour she harbored the thought. As a political power, Edgefield like Sampson has al ready been shorn of her locks and deprived of her power. Form Greenwood and Batesburg [counties, and Edgefield is left with a negro majority ! With her Rail roads gone, her farmei s must alone bear the burden of taxation-and her political power, once the proud boast ot her sous will be simply a memory-a thing of the past. The sole and selfish design ol the few villages we have named, ie to put their town property on a boom. The convenience of the public is a secondary considera tion-if indeed it be any consider ation at all. Lut us protest and in a way that can not be misunder stood.
