The Misses Aycock have at their Milli nery Store something entirely new in the way of ladies and misses hats and bonnets-new shapes, new styles, new names, and there is a great deal in the name even of a hat. Thousands of wr stern farmers have settled in South Carolina, North Caro lina and Georgia, but as yet none have struck this immediate section. Gov. Northen has recently settled sev en thousand families in that State, probably thirty thousand people. Seth Butler. Again has Edgefleld to mourn the loss of one of her most prominent citizens. Dr. Seth Butler, after a pro tracted illness, died at his home in our town OP last Wednesday morning. Deceased came of an old and honored Edgefleld family, and was a quiet, un obtrusive law-abiding citizen. His most prominent characteristics were bis industry, attention to business, und devotion to his family. Deceased was buried in our "city of the dead" from the Baptist church, where Dr. Gwaltney preached the fu neral sermon. The sympathies of this community are extended to the strick en ones. Death of Mr. O. Barr. Mr. O. O. Barr, who lived about a mile from our town, died on last Sat urday afternoon after a brief illness. On Sunday afternoon his remains were laid away in our village cemete ry, his funeral having been preached at the Methodist church by his pastor, the Rev. M. M. Brabham. Oscar Barr was always genial and warmheated, and although the strug gle with disease and adverse fortune was often heavy and grievous, he never showed sign of weariness or ill-tem per. He had many friends because he "showed himself friendly." And in the home circle he was ever tender and thoughtful. His name was written in the books of the chnrch militant; may it also have been written on the everlasting records of the Church Triumphant! EDITOR ADVERTISER: Some three weeks ago the youDg folk.- aud others of this community who have a litera y inclination met at thc academy for the purpose ot or ganizing a literary society. The meeting was presided over by Rev. G. H. Burton, who made quite an interesting talk in behalf of liter ary societies. The following offi cers were unanimously elected: President, Mr. P. R. Your correspondent had the pleasure of attending the second meeting of this society last Satur day evening and was delighted at the promptness with which the young ladies auc 'ung gentlemen responded when tu3ir names were called for a song or recitation. Ev ery member of the society feels a deep interest in its welfare and will do all within his or her power to keep up an interest in the work so well begun. The members of the society feel justly proud of their President, Mr. P. R. Everything considered, the far mers in this section are pretty well up with their work. Several young men from this section have joined the recently organized military company at Parksville. Miss Gertrude Dorn, of Faifa. S. C., is visitiugher sister, Mrs. J. A. Harvley of this vicinity. Mrs. Cheatham, of Gainesville, Ga., is here spending awhile with Mrs. Edmunds. Some fifty or more" pupils have attended :.hc Modoc High Schcol this session. The school is in charge of Miss F. Estell-? Knight, of Cooper-Limestone Institute and of the Greenville Female College.
