A VOICE FROM NEW YORK John R. Abuay, JEsq., now prominent lawyer in New Yor city, is on a visit to Edgefield, hi old home. Mr. Abney will on hi return go by way of Oklahoma where he has some important prc fessional engagements. In a shoi interview we were glad to lear; that Mr.'Abney did not think Gov Tillman to be so black a devil (? as the antis have painted him and that while he didn't agre with him on some subjects, h certainly did in his advocacy o the- $3 poll tax, the Agricultura College, and the industrial achoo for girls, and in his opposition t< the financial theories of the Wal street magnates. Mr. Abney think that Gov. Tillman is sincere, hil intentions honest, that the plat form on which he has gathered hi followers to be of sound timber but that some of his methods ar* at times faulty. DEATH OF DR. GARRETT The following account of th< death of Dr. H. C. Garrett, a highlj esteemed son of Edgefield, we eli] ^ from the Augusta Evening News Dr. Henry C.Garrett, after ar illness of four weeks with typhoic fever, died at ll o'clock thii morning. His condition has been critical for the past week, and the end, which peacefully and quietly came, has been momentarily looked for several days. The doctor waa a native ol Edgefield county, S. C, and lived there up to two years ago, when he bought a lovely home and moved out here. He was 57 years old, and a * graduate of a New York Medical College. He was a brother of Mr. W. A. Garrett of August, who was with him at the time of his death, also a brother of Mrs. W. J. Talbert, Mrs. Collier Hammond, and Mrs. W. Holmes, all of Edgedfield. The Doctor leaves a wife and six children. His only son is now desperately ill with typhoid fever, and there are grave fears of his recovery. ^Dr. Garrett was a prominent, citizen, and was well known and generally admired. He was a cultured and refined gentle man and liked by all. Dr. E. W. Bailey of Beaufort, S. C., a prominent druggist of that town, was m Macon yesterday. . He said to the News that no matter who wins in the' primary next . Tuesday in that State, there is going to be a bolt, and that one of the hottest and most bitter cam paigns ever known in modern political history will be waged between the Til Im?n i tes and Shep pardites. It is feared that when this bolt does come that there will be blood shed in our sister State. BL South. Hurrah for Jake Hardy 11 Cooperville, No. 1,? 85 for Till man, 1 for Sheppard. Holstein's X Roads, 125 fo: Tillman, to 13 for Sheppard. In Edgefield county, Tillmai not only held his vote of the 9tl of April, but captured half of th< boxes which went for Sheppard or that date. Hurrah for Jake Hardy ! Tillman ..carried Merriwether his own box, by a majority of 8. Hurrah for Luther Reese ! THE THIRD PARTY In Alabama, Kolb, who appearec aa an alliance candidnate for gov ernor and was defeated for th< democratic nomination, bolted was defeated again and is nov> acting with the republicans. In Arkansas the third party and republican leaders are acting together. In Louisiana, the alliance anounces a ticket for electors against the democrats. In North Carolina, the alliance has gone bodily to the third party. In Georgia Tom, Watson and other leaders who pretended two years ago to be democrats, and who were brought into this State to teach us democracy are now third party whoopers. In. Texas, we are told a bolt is sure from the democratic nomina tions. In Tennessee Buchanan, elected governor as an allince democrat, has bolted the party and is running as an independent. In Virginia, the third party is organized and in the field for a hard fight-Greenville Daily News. In South Carolina, Gov. Tillman throttled the Third party in its early infancy before it had even grown its pin feathers.-[ED. ADVERTISER.] Alabama Saved to the Democrats Party for all Time. NEW YORK, Aug. 29-Addison G. Smith of Birmingham, Ala., Chair man of the Alabama State Central Committee, said to-day : "We have had a terrific fight in Alabama, bul we have saved the State to the Democratic party, not only for the State, but for the Presidential contest, and we believe for future years. In the coming campaign WM are going to carry the State for Cleveland and Stevenson. Alabama will not vote to surrender home rule governmenl and the control of her elections to any exterior au thority. There are indications of : a fusion between Kolb men and : the Republicans, but it will fail te : succeed." WEEK OF ANXIETY. Many Vessels Scheduled to Arrive in New York from Infected Ports. NEW YORK, Aug. 29.-This is likely to be a busy and anxious peek for health officials who stand guard over the entrance to New fork. An extensive fleet of foreign vessels from all ports of Europe, many of them direct from cholera infected districts, are scheduled to arrive here, and with the spread )f the disease abroad the chances of its being imported here ie con sidered alarmingly great and ever increasing. The same scrupulous vigilance that has marked the work of the health officers at quarantine ever ?ince the first news of the ap pearance of the disease in ports of Europe reached here will continue to be maintained and if such a thing be possible even greater precautions will be taken. Seven counties in western Texas have refused to issue a marriage jertificate to a boy 15 years of ige and a widow 40 years old with thirteen children. A man obtains his maximum ?veight at 40 years of age. a woman it 50 years. It is said every man has some thing to growl about. It is a sad house when the hen ;rows loude? than the cock.
