Mr. Manchester Padgett died at his home on Cloud's Creek, at 5 o'clock on Monday morning, aged 70 years. Mr. Padgett waa stricken with paralysis many months ago, bnt partially recovered, al though his condition had since then been quito feeble. A false report got out last fall andgot into the papers, that he was dead. Before enfeebled as above, Mr. Padgett was one of Edgefield's most en terprising and successful farmers ; one who "lived at home" and who enjoyed the fruits of his mast excellent system of agriculture. As a citizen and neighbor he was just what might have been expected of the christian man and p"Titlfm,in *bW r'had ever been. This country, he says emphati cally, is the gardon epot of South Carolina. Its people, and lueir hospitality and style of living; ita soil and mode of farming; ita progress, enlightenment and prosperity: all claim lug highest admiration. Remarkable Improvement. Somewhat more than a year ago one of the brightest, best and handsomest boys in .our whole county waa stricken with paralysis-of the right Bide. Wo alludo to Mr. Rufus Dean, widely and warmly beloved. Two months ago this young gentleman went lo Atlanta for special and scientific medical treatment ; and now he returns home BO materially improved as to warrant tho expectation that lie will eoon be restored to vigorous health. We bog him and his friends to consider thc advisability of his going lo the HolSprings of Arkansas. These wonderful healing waters are what he needo. Exodus Westward. On Monday morning last, a party of as good citizens as Edgefield has within her borden, departed from Batesburg on a prospecting tour to Arkansas and Texas. Capt. Crouch and Mr. James Cul lum go to Arkansas-lo the neighborhood, we presumo, of Mr. Pick Cullnm and young Lowraan-to look around them ; w'aile DavisCorley, a son of West Corley, Esq., of the Mt. Narrow Gauge Meeting at Denny's. This meeting at Denny's on Tbursdayi the 20th, promises to be a groat one in numbers, in enthusiasm, and in practical result. Saluda's wisdom, public spirit and money will be there. And God grant that the out come] may be such as lo for ever nullify all wish and necessity for the sundering of Saluda and Edgefield. Capt. n. H. Tillman. This gr:. .leman made thc speech of the occasion at the Bennettsville meeting. As it has not been published, and as wo have not seen Capt. Tillman since its delivery, we cannot safely comment upon its scope and intente. We earnestly hope that Hie Exec utive Committee of the Association will have it published in pamphlet form. They ought to do so. The Johnston Baptistery. The baptistery of the Johnston Baptist Church is in progress of ereclion, and, from the size of the room as ono drives along the high road, promises to be a large and of course well-ordered affair. Indeed we have no doubt it will be beautiful. O' all the churches in our county, this one moat continually and most liberally ex emplifies ?B zeal. Studying Law. We find our highly esteemed and very gifted young frieid, Mr. James P.i Bean> at Johnston, beginning (the study of" law. This profession will suit his head and his turn of mind precisely. We are glad to know, of his resolve in this respect, -and wish him well. Nra. Plckeus. Our honored townswoman above named, Vice-Regent for South Carolina of tho Mt. Vernon Association, reached home from Mt. Vernon on Saturday last. Dur ing her visit to Mt. Vernon, just endedi she completed the rehabilitation of the South Carolina Boom, which is now, as regards elegance and historic interest, second to nono in the famous mansion. Atlanta Enterprise. Atlanta enterprise in Edgefield ! Thal is, we mean enterprise that would become the push and vim of Atlanta. The phe* nomenal building up of Mr. W. B. Penn's new brick grocery and drug store-on his old site. Thenty-five or thirty men are at work upon it ; and, at their present rate of work, G. L. Penn & Son will bc magnificently installed in new quarters in leas than a month. The Terrible Homicide at Clinton ward. Before this time, the grer.t mnjnrity of our readers know of the terrible homicide which took place at Clintonward on the night of Tuesday, th* 4*li instant, in which Mattie Isaac, a young negro woman, stab bed to the heart and instantly billed a ne gro man, named Henry Daniel. Thew two persons, with others, were returning linnie at about midnight from a colored church, On Thursday, the Ct h, the woman was brought to our jail; and the (irani! Jury being slill in session quickly found a true bill against her. She is to be tried on Friday of this week, and to he defended by A. S. Tompkins, Esq. We mention'.he most important c-.scs alnudy disposed of, or to be disposed of: Young Glenn was not tried last week as had been decided upon, but will probably be this week. Joe Moore, the negro fellow accused of arson, was copricted, and re commended by the j arv ?. mercy. In the case of tho State against Hinch Hughes, for assault and battery and carrying con cealed weapon, the accused was pronounced not guilty. Goode Head, the young white man tried for murder, was found guilty of manslaugber. A young white man named Snipes, accused of assault and battery with intent to kill, was found guilty of assault and battery and sentenced to six months in thc county jail or n fine of one hundred dollars. A young white man named Yonce accused of assault and battery, was cleared. Falkner, indicted for aggravated assault, was found guilty, and sentenced to pay ?200. He paid it and depailed. In the beginning of the second week, and with the jury of the second week, Sheriff Ouzls was cleared of the charge of allowing prisoners to escape. Or in plainer English, the jury acquitted him of evil intent in allowing certain prisoners too much liberty and too many privileges. Of course we all understand and appre ciato the fact that it was simply too much kindnesss of heart that led our good-Sheri ff into this error, if error lhere was. On Fri day, Mattie Isaac tho reputed Clinton ward murderess, is to be tried. The case of the State va. Joe Whilo and two other negro men for riot and murder-the Datk Cor ner negroes implicated in the riot at the time of the killing of young Blackwell-, has been continued until next term. Goode Head and Joe Moore havo not been sentenced. The J udge has instructed the Sherill and his constables to allow nono but at torneys and officiala of the Court to enter, or at all events frequent, the bar. In such weather os we have now, the said bar often becomes very uncomfortable trom bein?; too crowded. The Courier-Journal publishes a letter written fifty years ago to Geo. D. Prentice, savagely attacking him for objecting editorially to Richard M. Johnson because he had a negro wife. The irate correspondent says: " Did not the President who gave ne our best Administration do the same? Was not Thomas Jefferson charged with keepng a negro wife, and did he not make a good Presi dent? I dc not see why this fault (if fault it be) in a man's private do mestic affairs should be brought into hi6 public life."
