As yet we do not know the details of this terrible easnaliy. A number of our lawyers are off to Co lombia this week, in attendance upon the Supreme Court. Notary Public. Dr. W. E. Prescott, of the Antioch sec tion, has been appointed a Notary Public by Governor Thompson. Two Papers. We will send the ADVERTISER and the Detroit Free Press both one year for three dollars. The Free Press is the great funny paper of the United States. Bishop Howe. The Right Reverend W. B. W. Howe will preach in the Church of Our Savior at Trenton on Sunday morning next. In the evening he will preach in Trinity Church, Edgefield. To Yorkville. Our young friend, Mr. Brunson Hol lingsworth, the only son of John H. Hol lingsworth, Esq., will depart from among us in a few days for Yorkville, there to enter Col. Coward's military sc jool. The Advertiser Horse Book. Roche, the very efficient Supt. of the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society will accept our thanks for a com plimentary ticket to the exhibition, which b?gan in Charleston on the 29ih instant and will end on the 23d cf February. Governor's Proclamation. The gin bou?e of Mrs. Susan Walker, in Aiken County, was destroyed by fire On the 10th of last November, and the barn of Dr. H. A. Shaw of Edgefield, was destroyed by fire on the 23d ot Novem ber. A reward of $50 is offered for the arrest of the barn burner in each of these cases. Board of Health. A new duty for our Town Council wilj be the appointment of a Board of Health. Said Board is to consist of not lesa than three members, one of whom must be a graduate of medicine in good stand ing. Should our municipal authorities fail to appoint such a local Board, the State Board must do so. Pretty Badly Gored. Edmunds got pretty badly gored by Butler in the Senate spat over the con firmation of Speer. The South Carolina Senator disposed of the bloody froth of the Vermont vituperator about aa1 effect ually as he dispelled the " empty vapor ings" of Conk Hug on a similar occasion. Augusta Chronicle Gypsies. A band of so-called Gypsies camped in our town for three or four days last week. The band consisted of two white women( three or four half naked little children, a h df-naked negro man, a half naked negro girl, six ecraggy horses, one scraggy mule, siveral scraggy dogs, and three wagone. One of the women told fortunes. And the band shared the honors of public at tention with tue Wizard Oil Troupe. Gov. Ilagood't Stock Farm. Gov. H a good's Saluda stock farm bas been conducted on business principles and is a pronounced success. Five hundied head of stock arc kept all the year round and in seven years onljt two have been killed by dogs and none have been stolen. A shepherd and his well trained dog bring up all the animals at night and pen them in secure and comfortable qnarleis -Pal metto Yeoman. Capt G. B. Lake. Senator M. C. Butler's resolution to al low each Senator a clerk at $6 a day, was agreed to on Thursday of last week, and he immediately appointed Capt. George B. Lake as his own clerk. Col. Jas. R Randall, of the Augusta Chronicle and Constitutionalist, was appointed as clerk to Senator Joe Brown, of Georgia. Two or three days before this, Capt. Lake had betn turned out of the positif n be had previously occupied, on account of being a Democrat. The Delinquent Lands. With reference to those persons whoso name3 appear on the Delinquent land list for Pickens and Wise Townships, two are not published at all, two have paid their taxes and have shown us their receipts, and all the others have tendered their taxes and the Treasurer's clerk declined to receive them. These are the facts as to the Townships named. It will be remem bered that the ADVERTISER declined to publish the Delinquent list last year, te cause of divers illegalities. This year there were so many more of such illegalities that the list was. not even offered to us. The Wizard Oil Troupe. From Tuesday night until Saturday night of last week,.the Wizard Oil Troupe delighted oar community. They proved to be quiet, pleasant, intelligent, gentle manly men. They play quite well on one or two instruments, and their singing is really admirable. In choruses, particu larly, they are charming. And as regards Dr. Burt, the spokesman and scientific man of the troupe, he ia a born comic ac tor, and one of brilliant gifts. He would make Job forget his troubles and laugh, and the Mother of the Maccabees, and Lazarus, and Poe's Raven, and all the other melancholy characters of sacred and secular history. Edgefield loved the Wizard Oil men. And the Wizard Oil men departed declaring that they would die clasping the dear memory of Edgefield to their bosoms. To Lawyers. For the Advertiser. Concerning Certain Delinquent Tax Sales. MESSRS. EDITORS : The County Au ditor has advertised, in the columns of the Edgefield Chronicle, for sale, under the head of "Delinquent Land Sales," a certain "House and Lot," described as situated in " Wise Town ship," which said property the under signed, as guardian, had returned, will, by way of explanation, submit the following brief statement: In the month of October of last year, and before the time for the pay ment of taxes had expired, I offered to pay, and tendered in lawful money, to the County Treasurer at his effice, the full sum of all taxes assessed anc charged against said property, as ly ing ?nd being in the eaid Wise Town ship ; that ?B to say, nil State and County taxes. But the said Treas urer refused lo receive and receipt foi the Same. The correctness ul tbi.^ statement, I apprehend, will not Li denied. In view of thn above, will any fair minded man say that said property is delinquent, or that I am in default, as to sa.d State and County tax? Will the executive branch of the govern ment force to sale said propel ty on account of State and County taxes' Has the administration cf the affairs of this State fallen into the hands of men so unmindful of the principles of justice and the property rights of individual citizens, as to permit euch a thing to be done ? If so, then the time to -agitate the propriety, nay, necesfrify, for displac ing those now in authority, basc?me. R. G. M. DUN0VANT-. The Lui heran Church al Leesville H ins an Injunction Case in Court. Hon. Wm. T. Gary received intelli gence to day from across the river of winning au important case, in v,hich he represented in his able, earntst-and eloquent way, the Lutheran church and congregation in Leesville, S. C. The issue was the settlement of the church and school property in Lees ville, school trustees having taken charge of the property and the con gregation having brought a bill of in junction restraining the school trustees in their action. The lill of in junction was argued before Ju-!}.-;" Kershaw, in Camdem, a few days ago by Major Gary and Attorney General Youmans, and after reserving bis opinion the Judge has given hu decision in favor of the church ard con gregation.-Augusta Evening News. The Mexican Treaty. The Senate has rejected the Mexi-. can Treaty and has thus prevented the establishment of reciprocal trade with that countrv. To the Southwest, where a large Mexican trade ia grow ing year by year, this will bs a serious blow, unless the action of thu St-nate is reconsidered and the treaty con firmed, but the vote does not pive much promise of such a result.-Raj istcr. Three homicides .in South Carolina were reported in the News and Cou rier yesterday. One was in Richland, where an old and inoffensive umi was beaten to death, and two were in Lancaster. No one of the accused has been arrested so far ; but, in the Richlaud case, the constables are hunting for the offender, and, in the Lancaster cases, wai rants hav-i keen issued. Nothing lees than the hang ing of some specimen whiskey-drink ing man-killers will put a H op to the bloodv work.-News and Courier. There is eome surprise among Sen ator Butler's friends at his modified attitude on the repeal of the internal revenue laws. He appears to have adopted the views of Mr. Ph I. Thompson, of Kentucky, whose bill is said to be really that of Speaker Carlisle, and represents a compromise that the whiskey men agree to.
