Aa we stated a fortnight or three weeks back, the News and Courier has been.sold to a joint stock company, Messrs Riordan and Dawson still owning a controlling interest and remaining at ihe&head of the conduct and management. See the pro spectos of this great paper m another column. Anti-Stock-Law. In our present issue are two very strong-almost bitter-anti-stock-law ar ticles. The one signed " Barnwell" is from a gentleman well known in Edge field in former days. In writing to us he Bald he was aware that it was very hard j oat now to get anti-atock-law articles published, but that he felt the Advertiser wa3 not of that partisan sort. He is right. We have never in any instance refused to publish anything sent ns from the anti-stock-law side. Never even dreamed for a moment of so refusing. Plenty of Labor. While* at {Johnston on Saturday, we met Mr. Sam Ready and one or two other large planters of the,Ridge, who informed us that they bad plenty of labor, and were already in condition to plant just as much cotton this year as last And we have heard since that the colored men on the plantations of Mr. Tom Bates and Mr. Alonzo Bates, who have been intend ing to still leave for Arkansas, have ?nal ly abandoned that idea.^and are 'again contracting with the said gentlemen. It came oh" on Friday night last, and was gay, and bright and pretty. So gay, and bright and pretty ?that even tertain old and shaky people felt well paid for the perils they encountered in getting to it, mud a million feet deep, and rain in such torrents as wonld have put Noah's deluge to the blush ! It was held ia the Salads department of the two-fold Calhoun Ho tel, all of whose lower rooms were open for the purpose. Aud when you tired of the dance, and the throng, and the merri ment, you had ooly to run across the street and rest you in a bright parlor? with warm carpet, and fine piano, and luxuriooB chairs, and soft lamp?. And Mrs. Willie Coleman and Mrs. Dave Strother, two graceful and dignified young married ladies, were the chaperones, and beamed with equal suavity upon the just and the unjust. And handsome Lew Whatley, and gallant Frank Carwile, and polished Johnnie Strother and hospitable Jake Hardy were here, and there and every where, seeing that people were com fortable, and that things went well. And Mr. John W. Calhoun's all-seeing eye was over all. And our stalwart yoong friend, Mr. Wm. Lott, bore the burden of the music with his faithful violin. And nobly did he bear himself in the fray. And Meeting Street kissed Johnston; aud Mt. Tabor gave forth its sweetoees ; and Batenbug, and Columbia, and even distant Baltimore, sent out their olive branches. Aad, the boys were gallant, and gay, and tender. And we have never " put in'an oar'' on a more auspicious or enjoyable occasion. Boys, always invite os. We dote upon you. A little more than one year ago we were called upon to record the death of Miss Maggie, the eldest and greatly be loved daughter of Mr. Tillman Padgett? of Elmwood section. A few months la ter the father followed the daughter to the spirit land. And now aether, the Ir-vely Miss Claude, has gone to meet the father ind sister. Strange are the ways of Prov idence ! lt seems but yesterday-it is, in truth, but a little more than two weeks tinee Miss Claude was in our town, bright, irivacions, the charm of the social circle; .?he joyous love-light of admiring Iriends. This, but yesterday, aa it seems; to-day, gone forever ! The colored cooperation store which wi announced lately as being closed by the Sheriff, has been opened again; this time in Gain's new building on the 'corner where bia residence form arly stood.
