Death of Thomas Payne, Esq.
Thomas Payne, Esq., a representative
citizen and gentleman of Edge field, died
at his home, in the upper part of the
District, on the 12th inst, aged 72. His
was a life trne.to honor and to duty.
An Accumulation of Sadu ess.
Mr. Payne, whose death is announced
above, was followed to the grave, in
nine days, by his daughter, Mrs. J. R.
Tolbert. This beloved lady died on the
21st inst And, terrible to relate, while
the bereaved husband was attending the
burial of his wife, his house was fired
by some soulless villain and burned to
the gronnd. And if it may be allowed
to mention money in this connection, we
would mention the report ? that some
$2,000 in cash was also burned with the
house and furniture.
Still Another Aged Citizen Gone.
Even while we Vrite, the friends of
Thomas Deloach, Esq., of the Harmony
section, are driving out of town to attend
his funeral rites. Mr. Deloach died on
MondayHfci ?5th, After along prostration
from the infirmities of old age. He was
aged about, seventy-f our years, t Another
name which may be held up to the rising
generation as an example of a good citi
zen, an honest' mah, a firm friend and"
kind neighbor. . .
More of the Tournament and Hall.
Only two more days before the much
ant ioipated Tournamen t and Ball ! Every
thing betokens that they' will both be
brilliantly successful. The Tournament
will begin at the Tournament grounds at
ll o'clock A. M.
The banner will be presented by Gen.
John D. Kennedy, of Camden, so distin
guished as a soldier and a leader in the
war.
Tho Augusta Sabre Club, .and the
Dom's Mill Club, under command of
Capt. Orlando Sheppard, will also be
present, to enhance the animation and
eclat of the occasion. -
All goes well. Como forth on Friday,

Local Items.
Tp-day, Mond?y, the 25th, is a beauti
ful specimen of the Indian summer
warm, bright, balmy. For ten days past,
however, the weather has not been sum
mery in any sense of the word; but, on
the contrary, biting cold and pitilessly
windy.
It is to bo hoped this sketch of Indian
summer will last until after the Tourna
ment and'Ball on Friday next. The
preparations for this gala day -are going
on briskly. Capt. Gary and his knights
are busy with the Jousts; Mrs. Boul
ware is busy with tho Feast ; the ladies
are busy with the Ball. To-day we have
seen more ladies in town than" for a long
time past. They are Hitting from store
to store, buying the tulle, tarletane,
feathers, flowers, and all the pretty,
Babylonish things, in which they will
look so charming on Friday evening.
The reign of big Potatoes has begun
and big Turnips, and Persimmon beer,
and "Pinders," and Possums-and all
that sort of thiner. Ournorer-failing and
ever-generous friend, Mrs. Ben. Hatcher,
has already sent the Advertiser corps a
very valuable present of hugely fine po
tatoes. How could we get along without
her?
Mammoth Flat .Dutch Turnips have
been sent us by our friend Mrs. N. R.
Sease, of the Pine House region. They
lay in a big basket with their green tops
still on, and were so white, cleon, fresh
and sweet, as to make al?beholders ex
claim with admiration. Shebas our best

The Hipporhinorrhca (short for horse
disease) does not rage in Edgefield sis
yet, but it will in all probability. We 1
have had, however, several cases of it,- !
and two painful and horrible deaths. :
There is but' little doubt of it having
been introduced herc by Vance's Cana- j
dian ponies. Several of these have been i
sick, and one has died.

Strong Need of a First-Class Hang
ing.

dead!
On Sunday last, in the fork of Horn's I
and Stevens' Creek, the Cotton House of |
James B. McKie, Esq., was destroyed
by fire. It contained seven bags of cot
ton which were consumed with it. Much
fencing was also burned. Loss about j
$600. No insurance. .
And in the same neighborhood, on or j
about the same time, Dr. R. H. McKie,
a brother of the above named gentleman,
had his Cotton HOuse fired several times,
but the cotton being very tightly packed,
was not consumed, and but little dam
aged.

?Sr Robert Hayne Perry, of Green
ville, South Carolina, died in Aiken,
S. C., on the morning of the 18th in
stant. Mr. Perry had just reached his
18th year, and was the son of Governor
B. F. Perry, of Greenville.
At length it is proved that a man has
moro vanity than a woman. This is the
way that it came to pass : A curious in
vestigator watched while a thousand men
passed a looking-glass used as a sign on
thc sidewalk in Broadway. The result j
of his observation showed that nine
hundred and ninety nine men glanced
complacently at their image as they pass
ed. The other man- was blind. Fonr
hundred and fifty-two women passed
during the same hour and a half, and
none ol' them looked in the mirror-all
of them being engaged intently examin
ing eacli other's appearance aud dress.
