' IiOcal Items. We went one day last week to try the new Baptist orga^; It is of the Melodeon family, and very . good. In tono, it is quite sufficient fpr the building ; and in touch,- it ls most excellent. In fact the touch and action aro so good that one can play sky-rockets upon it almost as easily as upon the piano. It strikes us, how ever, that the price given for it was# abso lutely enormous. The crape trees this season surpass all ? they have ever heretofore done. Those in the front yard of W. W. Adams, Esq., are the most beautiful we have ever be held. They look as if fifty million wagon loads of watermelon meat -had been thrown upon their tops. The Sabre Club meets for its first pa rade and drill, on Saturday next. Knights to the front! Maidens, prepare your heads for the crown ! Grand Lecturer B. Rush Campbell, of the Masonic fraternity, is present in our J town, and the Masons seer < to be* having J quite a time cfit. If we mistake not, they hold meetings in the forenoon, in the afternoon, and at night, and the work of the Chapter is being exemplified to the Companions, -and several have received j the Chapter degrees. Col. Campbell is a bright and shining light in Masonry, and is in high esteem w"th his brethern of ? the mystic tie in Edgefield. And speaking of the Masons reminds us of tho fact that the new-fangled Radi cal society of United Brethren, now hold their meetings in the former rooms of j the Odd Fellows, in the third story of the Masonic building-just opposite the Ma sonic rooms. Verily this is a meeting of | extreme*-a society on one side of the; j passage, founded by Adam almost ; and one on the other side, founded by Prince Rivers. Bah! "what fellowship hath Christ with Belial?" And apropos of watermelons, what a feast of them we are having ! And how fear ful they are in sise ! And how inimitable in flavor ! The Fine House region is, be yond all cav il, the finest in the world for watermelons. And peaches likewise, although the finest are not yet ripe. And as to okra, tomato, cabbage, green corn, and Lima beans, the rains have caused them tobe-magnificent in quantity and quality. Indeed we do not remember a season when the fruits of the earth were in fuller hey-day. And thank God for it ! Our young friend, Mr. James Bonham, son of Ex-Go v. Bonham, is just back from the Military Institution at Lexing ton, Va. And our. young friend Mr. Ben. Bettis, Jr., son of tho veteran of | the Fine. House, has recently arrived from the Washington and Lee College, of the same place. We have not had thc pleasure, however, .of shaking either of j these young gentlemen by, the hand. We would be delighted if they would step in, and; as the old-time people say, tell us " their explites." One of our sweethearts' (their hame is legion !) has sent us a jug of sweet cider. Think of a nice girl who plays on tLe piano like Rubinstein and sends a poor old editor sweet cider!- We drank until we ' become quite jig-joggy. Perhaps some people will imagine we are so now. We would like another jug. There will be no service in the Episco pal Church on Sunday next. The Hov. Mr. Walker goes to the Sand Hills of j Augusta to preach for the Rev. Mnweed, of the Church of the Redeemer. The Baptist colored women have had pnother Hot Slipper for the benefit of | their Church. It was quite successful. Some cake sent us from it by our friend, Margaret Lowe, was fit for a queen. Bet ter was never made. Mr. Barney Ballent*:*3.aid others, now in our jail, seem to be filled ever and anon with holy fervor. Every day they, shont ont certain old revival tunes until the very square reverberates. What a comfort it is to sing! In the depths of j woe it lightens our burden. The loafers haye found ont a bran new loafing place. We see them th?s after noon, in full force, on the cool pavement in front of Mr. H. A. Gray's shop.. Fruits, Vegetables, and Crop Stuff*. A young former, who is making his mark, Mr. U. Brooks, sends us a stalk of | cotton-a wide-spreading cotton tree ! with 160 bolls and squares upon it. And Tom Jones, a colored tenant of the same gentleman, sends, us a stalk of corn that would positively reach upto the heavens ; that if?, it is 15 feet high, and bas several very fine ears. Three cheers for Turkey Creek! , Mr. Walter Reynolds, living two miles' | West of this town, sends us a Collard whrcb is an actual roof tree-at all events an umbrella !-H} feet in circumference, j And Mr. Ben Hatcher, who of all the farmers and fruit-growers, is the most j constant and profuse to the Advertiser, sends us three Watermelons, weighing, from 32 to 40 lbs.-more delicious than was manna in the wilderness to the hun gry Jew ! And last, but not least-on the contrary, largest and longest !-Mr. Sam' Marsh, the Harry Bassett of the Watermelon world, sends us a fearful and beautiful monster weighing 42 lbs. From the Columbia Phoenix, of Fri day, we gather the following in reference to the late Federal arrests in the upper portion of Edgefield : "United States Commissioner Boozer had before him on Thursday the follow ing citizens or Ed ?erleid, arrested under the co called Ku-Klux act: Thomas W. Blease, Dr. W. B. King, George Turner, Williani Terry. J. O. Hamilton, R. S. Towles, J. L. Terry, James P. Merchant, Mack Smith, Sumter Turner, Jesse Bid dle, D. A. J.-Bell, Wm. Wheeler. The Srisoners were represented by Major ames M. Baxter, of Newberry, and Maj. W. T. Gary, of Edgefield. Waiv ing an examination, they were bailed in the sum of three thousand dollars each, to appear at the special term of the Uni ted States Court, which convenes in Co lumbia on the first Monday in August They were confined in the 'jail at' New berry on Wednesday night. This was particularly galling to at least one of them, ~Mio was for four years a Confede rate soldier, and bad never seen the .in side of a guardhouse. Tho charge against I them is a violation of the enforcement ?ct, on the 31st of December, 1870-near ly two years ago-the actual crime, as is asserted, being the riding on a rail of a j disorderly colored man. Commissioner J Boozer, we are assured, acted promptly and consistently in the matter. The Srisoners are under obligations to Mr. I R. Franklin for courtesies. It is un derstood that Judge Rives will occupy the bench with Judge Bryan during the . pending trials." The Phoenix is mistaken in saying that the cause of tho arrest was the rid ng on a rail of a disorderly "colored mon." The party ridden on a rail was'one Heck Harris, white-an extremely miserable and vicious renegade, whose unprovoked vileness BEFORE and active- malice since the deed (October 1870)-helped oh by the unprovoked vileness and active mal ice of others of his ilk-have led to these arrests. White men in South Carolina, when they take up with the Radical par ty, and fraternize with the negro asa ; o?an and brother, ' straightway fair to ha ting ali other white people who will not do likewise. They feel that they have degraded themselves, and their children and grand-children after them, unfath omably and irredeemably ; they secret ly hate themselves; and their intense, revengeful and unreasoning bitterness to their former friends and equals, knows no pity, no bounds. And this very thing it is-aided and stimulated largely, by the State and na tional administrations, for party ends which has caused the arrest, persecution and imprisonment of so many good and true citizens of South Carolina. Our fellow-citizens above-named, are good and trno men-true to their State and true to their race-and God grant them a safe deliverance from the suborned witnesses .and packed juries to whose tender mercies they will soon be exposed. The Big Railroad Meeting. Let ali concerned in the building of tho Greenwood and Augusta Railroad, bear in mind that a big Railroad meeting is to held at Greenwood on the 1st August,. and let everybody attend. Messrs* Hour H. F. Russell; Hon. H. K. Evans, John M. Clark, Esq., Colonel J. jp'. Smith, John L. Stockton, Esq., Dr. R. H. Lt?nd, Henry Moore, Esq., and Captain O. N. Butler, have been appoint ed by Mayor Estes, of Augusta, a dele gation to represent that city in the rail road meeting. A Suggestion. No name has become more rapidly famous within thc last two or three years than that of Albert Guerry, thc young South Carolina artist. Mr;Guerry isa native of Sumter'District. As a'po'rtrait painter he stands unrivaled in our State. We do not speak from hearsay ; we know him personally, and have seen a number of his pictures. He has lately returned froin Richmond, where he sojourned some months, painting a portrait of Gen. Robt. E. Lee, for the Town Council of | Greenville. This portrait is pronounced by the Richmond papers to bc a ?superb- j master piece in this line of art. Spartan burg, following the example of Green ville, has ordered of Mr. Guerry a copy of his fine picture. A?.d now, why not Edge field f We call tho mutter to the attention Of our town authorities..
