The Episcopal Entertainment.
The Dramatic and Musical Entertain
ment of the Episcopal -Ladies will take
place in Masonic Hall on Friday evening,
the 5th of July. On this occasion will
be presented ."The Happy Pair/', al
beautiful Comedietta, and " The Loan of j
a Lover/' a Vandeville of immense popu
larity. In the Vandeville, besides many
other beautiful songs, will be introduced
"Goodbye Sweethart" and the bridal
song from "Puritan!."
Before and between the Plays, certain
ladies and gentlemen-among thom two
of the finest lady piano-players in the
State-will perform a number of musical
compositions of the best style.
Refreshments will be offered on the
night of the Entertainment;'and on the
day following,, at ll A. M., the Ladies
will hold a Lunch in the Hall.
This Entertainment is for the benefit
of the Episcopal Church, and will be
one of rare attractions.

Fine Ralos and Crop Prospects Bright
* cuing.
In many portions of our County fine
rains are gladdening the hearts of the
people, and the crops, well worked and
free from grass, are growing vigorously,
and looking delightfully premising. In '
some sections the cotton is still small,
and stands sorry, yet with good season?
and a late fall, near an average crop may
be expected ; whilst in other portions o?
Edgefield*,-* large belt across the entire
County,-the cotton crop is indeed unu
sually fine, and the husbandmen are.
highly elated with their prospect of real
izing a large yield and handsome profits
in the harvest time. The corn crop gen
erally has been considerably "'effected by
the long drouth, but seasonable 'and re
invigorating showers are now falling
thereon, and this crop too will turn out
much better than many contemplated a ,
few weeks ago.
Hail Irregularities.
During the past week our community
has been annoyed no little by the irregu
larity of our mails from Pine House
Depot, and all owing, as we are told, to
the negligence, or indifference, or what
ever it may be termed, of the mail Agent
on the C. C. <fc A. Railroad, in his persis
tency in giving out the mail for Edge
field in the evening instead of in the
morning, as our mail schedule- requires
him to do, thereby delaying our letters
and papers from Augusta and the South
from one to two days. On to-day (Tues
day) we received our mail in due time,
and trust that we will continue to do so
in future, as we will if the Mail Agent
on the C. C. & A. Railroad gives thin
matter the prompt attention exacted ot
him by the postal department.
A Popular Summer Resort.
The Glenn Springs, in Spartanburg
County, S. C. These Springs have long
been celebrated for the superior medi
cinal qualities of the water, and their
interesting and pleasant surroundings.
Mr. W. D. Fowler, an experienced and
most successful landlord, is in charge of
the Hotel, and will make a visit pleasant
and attractive to all who may sojourn
under his. hospitable roof. See ad vcr

Burning of a Railway Trestle.
A trestle on the Charlotte, Columbia <fc
Augusta Railroad, two miles the other
side of Graniteville, between Vaucluse
Factory and Heard's Mill, was burned
on Thursday. Thursday 'and yesterday
(says the Chronicle & Sentinel of Satur
day,) trains were unable to pass, but pas
sengers and freight were transferred at
the break, and there was no interruption
of travel. The fire is supposed to have
been the work of an incendiary. It is
thought that the damage will be repaired
in a short time.
New Advertisements.
Mr. W. H. Branson has opened " Cash
Tables" at his popular House, and is
selling bargains to every one passing.
And his entire Stock has been marked
down to very low figures. He is keen to
sell-and therefore bargains on every
grade of goods are to be found there.

columns to-day-and means just what
he says. Mr. C. has determined to close
out his stock of summer goods before
1st September, and has' made up his

Disastrous Fire.
We regret to learn that on thc 14th in
stant, the large Dwelling on the planta
tion of Capt. J. S. Coles, near Dyson's
Mills, on the Saluda River, was destroy
ed by fire. The dwelling was occupied
by Mr. Jefferson Reams, who had rented
the place and was working the planta
tion. Mi. Reams lost a 1 a portion of
his furniture and' household article?.
Capt. (toles' loss is" estimated at about

the shingles on fire.

Edgefield. has always been distinguish
ed for men who are perfect in all the ac
complishments of a gentleman, and we
predict that this organization will num
ber amongst i' j members good looking
men,-expert swordsmen-graceful riders
-in short, Knights as true as ever noised
a lance, or drew a sabre.

The School Tax.
School Commissioner McDevitt gives
notice in another column to the Boards
of Sob.col Trustees 'of the respective
School Districts of this County,-calls foi*
rheetings of these School Districts,-abd
thinks that each District .should " raise
a liberal local School Tax for the sup
port of its Schools."
Now, with an unexpended State ap
propriation of over $15,000, to say noth
ing of the poll tax, and the Free Schools
of thc County closed, we cannot see the
necessity of levying a Special Tax for
School purposes, which tax cannot be
collected until the next general tas is
paid in November, and at which time
the State appropriation of $15,000 will be
received. Let the State appropriation
first be exhausted, and if that fund is ]
not sufficient, then call the School Dis
trict Boards together to advise as to the
Special Tax* ' . .. .. . .
But is this Special Tax, which Mr. Mc
Devitt wishes the School Districts to
levy, in accord with the Constitution of j
toe State ? That Instrument says : '
"The General Assembly shall levy ai ?
each regular Session alter the adoption
of this Constitution, an annual tax on all
taxable property throughput the State
for the support of pubbo.schools, which
rax shall be collected at "the same time I
and by the sortie Agents as the General I
State levy, and shalt' be paid into the
Treasury of the State." ?
" The school tax shall -be distributed
amonp the several School pistricts of the j
'State In proportion to the respect i v e num
ber of-pupils attending Public Schools.''
If the Constitution is sovereign, and no
one wiU gainsay it, then the threatening
iangiiage of the Legislature contained in
Section 2? of the Act referred to by Mr.
McDevitt, is unconstitutional.
The Constitution requires that the Leg
islature, and not the inhabitants qt each
School District, shall levy "an annual
tax," and further requires that "annual
tax" shall be distributed among the sev
eral School,' Districts, according Jo the j
number of pupils, and imposes no con
dition on the inhabitants to act in any
prescribed way before the appropriation
is distributed.
Therefore we would respectfully urge
the tax-payers, in their School District
meetings, not to levy a special tax for j
school purposes. There is no. necessity
as yet for any special tax, and if there
was, it would certainly bo unconstitu
tional for these District meetings to levy
a solitary farthing for Free Schools.
MOKE ARRESTS-ONE MAN SHOT.
Deputy Marshal Maloney, pf Newberry,
with a posse or file of soldiers? (says the j
Phoenix of the 25th,) made a raid upon |
the residence of Mr. Thomas. W. Blease,
in Edgefield County, hear,Saluda Old
Town, Sunday night, to arrest some par
ties charged with violation of the En
forcement Act. They were mur in all-^

Barr and another. Perry was captured
without injury ; John J. Barr was. seri
ously wounded, while attempting to get
away, and the other two escaped.

met at the Astor House on Monday, at

the following report of Us proceedings :
" Dr. W. H. Tutt, of Georgia, was call
ed to the Chair, and Capt. B. H. True
elected Secretary. The Act of incorpora
tion was presented which was prepared
pursuant to the provisions of an Act of I
the State of New York, entitled 'An Act
to authorize the formation of corporations
for manufacturing, mining, mechanical and
other purposes,' passed February 17, 1848,
and of thc several Acts extending and
amending the same. This Act of incor
poration gives the' company full power to
deal in lands in all parts of the South, to
form colonies and to do a general real es
tate business. After the Act of incorpor
ation was adopted, Col. W. S. Flippen, of |
Tennessee, was called upon and made some
remarks.
