How Is It Elsewhere?
Never tn our lives before have we
known auch a severe winter in the South
? -such hard, unmitigated, continuous
cold. And the caprices of the weather
are also remarkable. Within a week
past, We have had snow, sleet, thunder,
lightning, rain, sunshine and doods.
Not a bud upon plum or peach tree is
even swelling yet, and stern winter holds
us as pitilessly as in Alaska.
-Uris state of things fills thin and bony
people-and those who have to buy their
wood-with groanings that cannot be ut
tered.

Homicide at Johnston's Depot.
A difficulty occurred on Saturday eve
ning last, at Johnston's Depot, on the C.
C. cfc A. Railroad, between a white youth,
aged about eighteen, named, Tom Hazel,
and a colored man named Jack Garret, in
which Garret was shot and killed by Ha
zel. Rumors concerning the canse and
manner of this unfortunate affair are
somewhat conflicting. It seems though
chat tho two fell into a violent quarrel
??bout a deb. due Garret by the father of
Hazel, ir. which the latter bore himself
very defiantly, if indeed the two did not
actually come to blows. Young Hazel
having disappeared from that section,
lias not been arrested. No papers from

Local Pick-Ups.
They are pitifully scarce, however.
Everybody seems to be busy, but noth
ing startling happens We have no banks
or railroad companies to declare divi
dends. No lottery schemes. No deba
ting societies. No cotillion clubs. No
skating rinks. No sabre clubs. No tour
naments. We are a slow-jogging people.
But we have now and then a big, hos
pitable frolic in the village, or not far
off. Our friend, J-n R-d, Esq., came
out strongly in this linc a week ago, and
gave the young people and the gay peo
ple such a " turn-loose" as they have'nt
had for many a day. Take our word for
it, that big house-that hospitable man
sion-on the high hill, wa* a scene of
light and life and beauty on the occasion
we refer to. Our friend and his warm
hearted lady and his accomplished daugh
ter evidently know exactly how to give
and manage a M turn-loose." And all of
us-the aforesaid young people and gay
people-beg leave to assure them that
whenever they will do so again, we ?rill
not hesitate to brave the angry waves of
Horn's Creek and the horrors of the
Rocky Mountains. Bah ! what are waves
and mountains to a "turn loose!" Who'll
give the next? We could lay our finger
upon so many that ought to.
We dreamed the other night that our
friend, Ben Mays, who lives down by
the "angry waves," sent us something
that he had shot, which measured five
feet from tip to tip, or from nose to tail.
What is it to be, Ben t for we know our
dreaming soul was prophetic. For the
Lord's sake don't let it be a gray fox.
We hear that the Town Council are
very soon going to repair and beautify
park. ' They must do same little
something soon, or they will depart out of |
office " unwept, unhonored and unsung."
Miss Do bey opens her school on Mon
day next. From all we seo and hear, her
prospect is quito flattering. And very
soon Mr. Broaddus will close the Acade
my, and then we shall have no male
Behool. So much tho worse.
We are all waiting to hear from the
Railroad charters in Columbia. What
new life a real, strong, tangible railroad
prospect would infuse into Edgefield !
A Tery Popular Stable ia Augusta.
A very popular Livery Stable in Au
gusta is that of Murrah ct Co., in rear of
the Globe Hotel. And at this Stable will
be found a young gentleman who is always
particularly kind to Edgefield people,
Mr. James R. Glover, a son of the late

The Annual masquerade Ball ia Au
gusta.
The annual Masquerade Ball of the
Benevolent Society of Augusta, take?
place in Girardeys Opera House, on
Tuesday evening, the 6th inst. The balls
are invariably very brilliant, very refined,
and very admirably conducted affairs.
As in former occasions, we are indebted
to the polite and generous management
for a complimentary ticket.
AB Exciting Occasion in Angn*tn.
A very admirable and a very popular
thing in Augusta, is the " Augusta Sabre
Club." This Club will give a grand
Tournament on tho Fair Grounds in that
eily, on Monday next, Feb. 5th. Out ol
about sixty members of thc Club sonic
thirty or forty will ride on this occasion.
This Tournament of tho Sabre Club
promises to be a noble tiling, and is crea
ting much pleasant anticipation. Ar
rangements have been made with the
railroads entering Augusta to carry por
tions attending the Tournament, for half
fare. Therefore we hope our section of
country will be well represented. Wc
return onr thanks for a complimentary
ticket to the Tournament of the Sabre
Club.

It is calculated that with a sufficient sup

In the course of last week, there came
off in Columbia a grand Cock-Fight, be
tween Edgefield and Augusta, of the one
party, and Newberry and Columbia, of
the other. Out of the eighteen fights
laid down upon the programme, Edge
field and Augusta won Eleven. When
we contrast Eleven with Seven, generosi
ty forbids us to crow or flap our wings.
We strike our victorious spurs into no

CP" A desperate shooting affray oc
curred at Charlestown, Va., on the 23d,
under the following circumstances : Du
ring the war the lands of John Clarkson,
a wealthy Virginian, were sold for taxes,
and yesterday he sued to recover the
property. Dorine; the progress of the
trial Clarkson called the defendant, Uni
ted States Marshal Stock, a liar. Stack
struck Clarkson, and a general melee en
sued, in which seven shots were fired.
The room was small, and more than a
dozen persons were present. Clarkson
was shot four times, and one wound, be
ing in the breast, is dangerous. All the
parties aro wealthy and respectable, and
the aflair has caused great excitement.
The New Democratic Paper in Co
lombia.
Col. J. P. Thomas, so weil known
especially of late-a3 the able, spirited
and patriotic editor of the Phoenix, has
severed his connection with that paper
and set up one of his own. This new
paper is called The ' South Carolinian
the familiar and honored name of the pa
per so popular in our State before tho
war, owned and edited by Dr. Gibbes,
the father-in law of Col. Thomas.
The prospectus of the South Carolinian
stands in another column of the Adver
tiser. We beg for it universal attention.
As regards the South Carolinian prov
ing to be, now and in future, a free, hon
est, bold and unfettered organ of polities
and industry, there can be no doubt
whatever.
