The Little People.
A dreary place-would bo this earth, .
vi ere there no little people in it ;
Thes?ng of life would lose its mirth,
Were there no children to begin it.
No little forms, likc-Luds to grow,
^\nd make t ho admiring heart surrender
Notittle hands on breast and brow,
To keep tho thrilling love-ohords tender.
The sterner souls would grow morestern,
tr?Te?ling nature more inhuman ;
And man to stoic coldness turn,
And wonjan would be loss than woman.
Life's song/'indoed; would lose its charm
Were there no babies to begin it;
A doletto* place this world would be,
^cre there no little people in it.
AWKWARD.-A citizen of Eliza
beth, New Jersey, went to the cars
on Thanksgiving Day to seehis daugh
ter off. Securing her a seat, he pass
ed out. of the cars, and w?'nt round
to.her window to say a parting word,
as.ie frequently done on such occa
sions. While he wasp?issing out, the
daughter left the seat to speak toa
friend, and at the same time a prim
looking lady who occupied the seat
with her moved up to the window.
Unaware of the important changes
inside our venerable friend hastily
put his face up lo the window and
hurriedly exclaimed, " One more kiss,
sweet pet." In another instant the
point, of a bluo cotton umbrella caught
his seductive lips, followed by the
passionateiujunction, " Scat, you gray
headed wretch IV. and he scatted.
LIFE OF AN ACTRESS-A SAD
STORY.-Miss Annie Glover was born
in Glasgow, Scotland, became an ac
tress, and was left a fortune of eigh
ty thousand dollars, with which she
came to this country, and married a
man named Barry, who squandered
all her money. She obtained a di
vorce from her husband, and after
ward performed at most of the Wes
tern theaters. She was induced to
remarry her former husband, but was
forced to leave him a second time.
At the time of the great fire at Chi
cago she was burned ont and wander
ed through the streets half clad and
penniless. During the prevalence of
the conflagration, she caught a severe
cold and was subsequeatly taken by
a friend almost as poor to St. Louis,
where, on the22d ult., she died, aged
only twenty-four years, and her body
consigned to the grave at the public
expense.
On circuit, when a counsel was
making a speech, an ass brayed loud
ly outside. " One at a time, gentle
men, if you please," said the Judge.
Soon after, w-hile his lordship was ad
dressing the jury, the same long-ear
ed quadruped again began to give
tongue. " What noise is that?" de
manded the Judge. The counsel re
torted : " Only the echo of the court,
my Lord !"
? - . -
It is an old anecdote, but a good
one, which declares that a son of
Erin's Isle, wandering along one of
the roads of Connecticut, and meet
ing there a pious and solemn resident
of that locality, asked him : " An*
plaze yer honor, will ye be so kind
as to tell me where this road I'm
walkin' in lades to?" was answered
in deliberate tones, " it leads to h-ll !"
and Erin replied, " Faix an by the
looks of tho country and its inhabi
tants I do be thinking I >m most
there."
A BATCH OF RADICAL GOVERNORS.
-There are eight or ten Radical Gov
ernors now before the public who
have been impeached, or who stand
before the country disgraced. Holden
of North Carolina, was impeached
and removed. Butler was impeached
for fraud and corruption in office in
Nebraska. Davis has been disgraced
in Texas. Bullock has stampeded
from Georgia, to avoid impeachment.
Austin, of Minnesota, is now'"charged,
with having taken a bribe of $5,000.
Governor Scott, of South Carolina, is
charged with fraudulently issuing
State bonds to the amount of $20,
000.0J0. Ames and Clayton have
managed to get out of their States
by securing places in the United
Srates Senate. Most of the above
named worthies were instrumental in
increasing the debts of the Southern
States more than $200,000,000, and in
disposing of the money. The South
ern people were impoverished by the
wir. A Radical Congress sent a
swarm o' carpet baggers among them
to mortgage their property and steal
money realized from the same. And
now Grant is capping the climax by
the imposition of martial law, and
the suspension of the writ of habeas
corpus! Read the letter of William
Diflingham, a young man from St.
Lawrence County, now in South Caro

JOHN E. BACON aid W. P. BUTLER, General Agents for the State of
South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia.
As general Agents we take pleasure in presenting this well known and responsi
ble Company to the public and in recommending it as FIRST CLASS in every way.
We might add much more in this regard, but being interested as its Agents, prefer
to speak through DISINTERESTED PARTIES. Therefore, read and-digest the
following notices (among many others) from both Northern and Southern papers as
to the virtues of this Corapanj-.
Sun-Columbus, Georgia, January 27, 1SG9: "There is no better Company in the
land. A comparison with other corporations of a similar character will convince
all of tho superior safety in taking nsk3 with the Brooklyn Life." .
Insurance Times-Kew York, January, 1S09: "Tho Brooklyn has placed itself in
the van guard of insurance reform, and is tho first Company that has done full
justice to the insured," Ac, <tc.
The Sentinel-Raleigh, N. C. : " This great feature of cash surrender value is an
important improvement that signalizes the era in insurance."
Bonton Post-Massachusetts, 18G9: " This plan (guaranteed surrender values) re
moves the sole objoction existing to making an application for insurance. Each
policy becomes a piece of negotiable paper, as easily transferred as a Registered
Bond."
Dispatch-St. Louis, Mo., January 7, 1809 : " A policy in the Brooklyn Life is
thus worth so much in ready money, (fee. This is the only Life Company that has
carried this excellent feature into business," tte., <tc
We call especial attention to this distinctive and advantageous feature of guaran
teed surrender value of the Brooklyn Life, particularly characteristic; and also to
the fact that there are no classes in the Brooklyn Life. All fare alike, whether from
the North, South, East or West.
Above all, we direct the public attention to the fact, that Polices can be obtained
in this Coin pan v, owing to its careful management and superior advantages, at
LOWER RATES than in any othor Company of EQUAL RANK AND SOLVENCY
in America.

THE CAUSE AND CUBE OF COIfSUKPTIOlt.
-The primary cans? of Consumption fi derange
ment of toe digestive organs. This derangement
produces deficient nutrition and assimilation.. By
limitation I mean that proceas by which the nu
triment of the food ts converted Into blood, and
thence Into the solids of the body. Persons with
digestion thus impaired, having the slightest pre
disposition to pulmonary disease, or if they take
cold, will be very liable to have Consumption of
the Longs in some of Its forms; and I hold that It
will be impossible to core any case of Consumption
without first restoring; a good digestion and healthy
assimilation. The very first thing to be done ls to
cleanse tbe stomach and bowels from aU diseased
mucus and slime, which ls clogging these organs so
tbat they cannot perform their fonctions, and then
rouse up and restore the liver to a heal thy action.
For this purpose the surest and best remedy is
nenck's Mandrake Pilla. These Pills dean the
stomach and bowels of aU tbe dead and morbid
allnieUhat is causing disease and decay in the whole
system. They win clear out the liver of all diseased
bile that has accumulated th pre, and rouse lt np tn
a new and healthy action, by which natural and
healthy bile is secreted.
The stomach, bowels, and liver are thus cleansed
by the use of Schenck's Mandrake Pills ; bnt there
remains In the stomach an excess of add.-the
organ is torpid and the appetite poor. In the bow
els the lacteala are weak, and requiring strength
and support. It Is In a condition into this that "
Schenck's Seaweed Tonic proves to be the most
valuable remedy ever discovered. It la alkaline,
and Its ase wUl neutralize an excess of add, matt
ing the stomach sweet and fieah; lt will give per
manent tone to this Important organ, and create
a good, hearty appetite, and prepare the system
for the first process of a good digestion, and
ultimately make good, healthy, living Mood.
After this preparatory treatment, what remains
to cure most cases of Consumption is the free
and persevering ase of Schenck's Pulmonlc Syrup.
The Pulmonlc Syrup nour isbas the system, puri
nes tbe blood, and is readUy absorbed Into the
circulation, and thence distributed to the diseased
lungs. There it ripens iJl morbid matters, whether
In the form of obsce* <e* or tubercles, and then
assists N stu re to expel ?ll tho diseased matter. In
the form of free expectoration, when once lt ripens.
It ls then, by tbe great healing and purifying
properties of Sehende'? Pulmonlc Syrup, tbat au
ulcers and cavities ore healed up sound, and my
patient Is cured.
Tbe essential thing to be done in curing Con
sumption ls to get up a good appetite and a good
digestion, so that the body wilt grow in flesh and
get strong. If a person has diseased lungs,-a
cavity or abscess tb.ere.-the cavity cannot heal, the
mutter cannot ripen, so long as the system is below
par. What ls necessary to cure is a new order of
things,-? g.iod appetite, a good nutrition, the body
to grow In flesh and get fat ; then Katu re Is helped,
the cavities will heal, the matter will ripen and be
thrown off In large quantities, and the person
regain health and strength. This ls the true and
only plan to cure Consumption, and if a person is
very bad, if the lunga are not entirely destroyed,
or even if one lung ls entirely gone. If there ls
enough vitality left in the other to heal up, there ls
hope.
1 have seen many persons cured with only one
sound lung, live and enjoy life to a good old age.
This Is what Schenck's Medicines WUl do to cure
Consumption. They win dean out the stomach,
sweeten and strengthen lt, get up a good digestion,
and give Nature tho asslsti-nce she needs to dear
tbe system of all the disease that Is In the lungs,
whatever the form may be. '_..
It is Important that while usln? Science's Medi
cines, care should be exercised not to take cold:
keep in-doors in cold -nf damp weather: avoid
night air. and take out-door exercise only in a
genial and warm sunshine. . .
I wish lt distinctly understood that when I recom
mend a patient to be careful in regard to taking
cold, whi 1 o using my Medicines, I do so for a special
reason. A man who has but partially recovered
i .-ora the effects of a bad cold ls far more liable to
a relopse than one who has been entirely cured;
and lt ls precisely the same In regard to Consump
tion. So fons; as the lungs are not perfectly healed,
lust so long ls there Imminent danger ora full re
turn of the disease. Hence it is that I so s tren u- .
ously caution pulmonary patients against exposing
themselves to an atmosphere that is not genial ana
pleasant. Confirmed Consumptives" lungs are a
mass of sores, which the least ch:-.nge of atmos
phere will Inflame. The grand secret or my suc
cess with my Medicines consists in my ability to
subdue Inflammation Instead or provoking lt, as
many of the faculty do. Ac Inflamed lung cannot,
with safety to the patient, be exposed to the biting
blasts or Whiter or the chilling winds or Spring
\ x Autumn. It should be carefully shielded from
?ll Irritating Influences. The utmost caution
should be observed In this particular, os without lt
a enru under almost any circumstances ia an impos
sibility.
The person shonld be kept on n wholesome and
nutritious diet, and aU the Medicines continued
until the body hos restored to lt the natural quantity
or fie-h and strength.
I was myself cosed by this treatment or Ute worst
kind of Consumption, and have lived to get fct and
hearty these many years, with one long mostly
gone. I have cured thousands since, and very
many have been cured by this treatment whom I
have never seen.
About the First of October I expert to take posses
sion of my new building, at the Northeast Comer o?
Sixth and Arch Street?, where I shall be pleased to
give advice lo all who may require lt.
Full directions accompany all my Remedies, so
that a person in any part of the world can ba
readily cured by a strict observance of the same.
