understanding with the Charleston news
paper house, we are compelled to present
the Advertiser this week ono column
short; but hope to remedy the matter
heroafter.
?&* We have had any quantity of rain
during the last week. The indications now
are In favor of dry weather.
Negro Ku-Klux.
On yesterday (Tuesday) our. streets
were alive with ten (so-called) negro Ku
Klux from Aiken, arrested and brought
here to have a hearing before R. W. Can
non, Esq., U. S. Commissioner, by Depu
ty U- S. Marshal A. M. Cochran. From
all we can gather it . appears that these
negroes, in company. >vith some ten ofh.
ers, armed with guns and pistols, on the
night of the 31st July, went to the house
of Mr. Isaac Sliellhouse, living some ten
miles from Aiken, threatened the family,
tore down the fencing around the house,
alarmed the ladies, and stated that they
had come to arrest one Porter, accused of
killing a negro ; that they had reason to
believe Porter was tbere, and they intend
ed to have him. Porter was not there
however, but a man by the name of Pe
terson was, and without a shadow of au
"thority, they arrested him, carried him
to Aiken, and lodged him in prison.
. Mr. Cannon-the Commissioner, was bu
sy on Tuesday hearing the evidence in the
case, and expected to have another show
ing at the accused to-day (Wednesday,)
but on Tuesday night the negroes took
leave of absence, and have not yet re
turned. Under the circumstances, what
course of action will be taken, wo are
not advised.
Capt. G. W. Croft, of the Aiken bar,
was here on the part of the defence.
?ST" The communication of " HOW
ARD," in reply to the late article from
the School Commissioner, has been re
ceived and will appear next week.
$32* We would respectfully call the
attention of those in favor of sustaining
an unconstitutional law, to the card
of School Commissioner MCDEVITT in
another column. He is simply in the
discharge of his duty, and District School
Trustees and tax-payers will please give
his card a perusal, and act in the premi
ses as seemoth to them best.
Yellow Fever in Charleston.
There is no longer any doubt of the
yellow fever being in Charleston. Some
forty cases have been reported since the
27th July, but only twelve deaths have
resulted therefrom. All apprehensions
however of an expidemic is gradually
subsiding, and we earnestly trust that
the disease will soon make its exit.
?S?~ Thc great four mile race at Sara
toga, on the 24th, between Helmbold and
Longfellow, was won by the former.

The Augusta and Laurens Railroad.
This new Railroad enterprise is still
creating quite a furor, and from every
one we have words of encouragement,
sufficient to assure us that thc undertak
ing can and will be carried forward and
on to a final success.
In the Laurensville Herald, of last
week, we find the following cafl for a
Railroad meeting at Laurens :
PUBLIC MEETING.-The citizens of tins
County arc invited to meet at the Court
House on next Sale-Day, for the purpose
of taking into consideration the way?
and means of building a Railroad from
this place to Augusta, Ga. Tho people
ol' Augusta and Edgefield aro ready to
unite with us in this enterprise, *ud if
we ar?only true to ourselves wo are now
sure of a way that will lead'us out of the
woods, and liuk us with the busy mar
kets ol' the world. The necessities of our
people are so great, and tho advantages
of this route-so obvious, that wo deem it
xmnecessary to enlarge. We have yet to
hear a single dissenting voice. The "prop
osition sweeps everything before it, us
does fire upon a prairie. Wc hope, then,
that every man who can conveniently
leave home, will attend on the day ap
pointed. Every man in the County is
interested in the proposed Road, and we
hope that every one will exercise his
right, and make his views and opinions
known. Come one, come all, and with
united e?fort at the wheel, let us roll the
car of progress onward.
And a Laurensville correspondent of
the Charleston Neics, says :
As to railroad news in this part of thc
State, we have some little stir, which ap
pears to be steadily increasing, about the
contemplated road from Augusta through
to Edgefield and Ninety six to this place.
If Augusta and Edgeneld will come to
us with liberal help, thoy will, I think,
meet with .a suitable response. We ol'
courso do not expect to get a charter from
our mongrel, manipulated Legislature ;
but then we know how to build a railroad
anywhere without a charter. We ask no
favors on that score.
And a Laurens man, away up at
Caesar's Head, writes to the Herald
thusly:
I hear up here the good, glorious news
that we are to have a railroad, right off,
from Laurens to Edgefield. Hurrah for
that !-Catch my hat! Its up! Up fora
railroad anywhere. I pressed on a few
Greenville people the feasibility of a three
feet gange from Greenville to Laurens.
Lets have both. There is a good time
coming for us yet, perhaps. Urge the
railroad in every and any direction.
Augusta sends the cheering tidings
that she is with us, and will give lib
erally of her means.
In Edgefield a rousing Railroad meet
ing will bo held at the proper time, and
our subscriptions will establish beyond
cavil that wo realize the importance of
the road to our inland town, and are
"going for" it in earnest.
Condemnation Should Come after
Guilt is Established.
We were greatly astounded and much
mortified whilst reading the ChiHstain
Neighbor's harsh and unwarranted attack
in its issue of the 24th, against the Land
and Immigration Association of BUTLER,
CHADWICK, GARY <fc Co., and its misera
ble and slanderous allusions to those
gentlemen. Astounded, because we had
ever regarded the able Editor of the
Christian Neighbor as a high-toned, in
teUectual Christian gentleman, and a
pious good man who would not wanton
ly asperse the character or impugn the
motives of any one claiming to be a gen
tleman, without being weU assured that
his grounds for condemnation wero as
clear as the noon day sun. And morti
fied to think that so prominent a Caroli
nian should be the first,-in his imagina
ry license of the press or his position in
the ministry-to exhibit a willingness, if
not desire, to detract from the fair fame
of our own honored BUTLER and GARY
a hard-earned fame they had nobly won
in Legislative halls, and later by gallant
ly bareing their breasts to the leaden
storm-up as it were to the very jaws of
the cannon's mouth-and bravely lead
ing where none but the brave dared to
follow-and all too for the honor and
glory of South Carolina,-that Carolina
which the Christian Neighbor would lead
as to infer BUTLER and GARY'-" South
ern gamblers," (to Use its own words)
"burning with ambition and avarice,"
would, for their own selfish motives,
sink into "disgrace and iniquity.''
Shame! Shame! Shame!
No, no! If South Carolina is never
sunk into " disgrace and iniquity" until
done through the instrumentality of
Generals M. C. BUTLER and M. W. GARY,
her honor wiU ever be pure and unsul
lied, the pious slime and would-be holy
defamation of the Christian Neighbor to
the contrary notwithstanding.
And the scheme of fie South Carolina
Land and Immigration Association, if a
success, will prove of material advan
tage to the Immigration interests of
South Carolina, because Gen. BUTLER
has said-and CALBRAITH BUTLER never
proves false to his word, recreant to his
country, or forgetful of his honor,-that
" after the expenses are deducted, wc are
pledged to give ?10,000 to the State Agri
cultural and Mechanical Society, under
whose auspices we are proceeding, and
every cent of the balance to the intro
duction of immigrants."
Therefore, we bid God-speed to the
Land and Immigration Association, and
trust the noble end aimd at by BUTLER,
CHADWICK, GARY <fc Co., may be fully
realized.
Another Explosion.
MOBILE, ALA., August 28.-The low
pressure steamer Ocean Wave exploded
her boiler at five and a-half o'clock Sun
day afternoon, at Point Clear wharf.
About two hundred excursionists were on
board, from fifty to sixty of whom were
killed and wounded. A portion of the
bodies were brought to the city by the
steamers Fountain and Annie last night,
and others will be brought to day. Ef
forts are being made for the recovery of
the drowned. The cause of the disaster is
not ascertained. An investigation will be
made. One creole family, consisting of
seven persons, had six killed. The cap
tain, engineer and pilot were killed. Only
three officers escaped.
