Executive Clemency.
We are pleased to announco that old Mr. AN
DREW MOYER, tried at tho June terni of Court
for the murder of JOHN AUTRKY, found guilty of |
manslaughter, and sentenced to two years impris
onment in the Penitentiary, has, upon a petition
from many of our best citizens, endorsed by
the presiding Judge, been pardoned by Gov.
SCOTT. On Thursday last ho was released from
Jail and returned lo his family.
The Hot Supper and Tableaux.
The Hot Supper and Tableaux of the Methodist
Ladies will take place, ns before nnnoupced, on
rf"riday evening next, in the Masonic Hall. Do

- Gea. O. H. HART, of this, town, has been ap
pointed a Mwgia-cr?rt byT GOT. (JctrrT-?S pro
pared to discharge all Magisterial business with
fidelity and dispatch.
Gen. II. fills the place a" Magistrate recently
occupied by S. HARRISON, Esq., who in May last
was removed so unceremoniously and unjustly by
Gov. SCOTT,-more for the gratification of petty
spleen than the good of law and order. Gen.
HART, however, had no agency in this ignoble and
dirty work. The malicious lies of a certain con
:emptible scalawag, to whom Gov. SCOTT appa
rently delights to givo unbounded credit, had
heir wonted effect, and forthwith tho cries of |
arty animosity and personal vindictiveness were
ppessed by the removal of a gentleman who had
idefivored to discharge the trust reposed in him
?nestly and justly to all parties.
An Ugly Piece of Business.
On the night of the 25th of May last, after the
ic'ion for Coroner at Pleasant Lane, a negro
in, named Reuben Sinyly? living on tho planta
. o of RANSOM TIMMERMAN, Esq., was very se
.i\y beaten by parties still unknown. On
Jnesdoy last, this negro died. A Coroner's
uost was held upon tho body, by LUMUEL Cott
-, Esq., and tho verdict rendered, was, if we
take not, that tho deceased came to his death

i of May. Several gentlemen of tho Pleasant
e neighborhood arc being implicated, by tba

A very vast crowd of negroes celebrated tho
.Uh of Joly at this place on Satur fay last, tho 3rd.
Truly the negroes are not advancing in civiliza
tion. The doings here on Saturday last would
have been perfectly comme ?i faut in Congo or
Ashantee AB idiotic mass of wretched negroes,
sp -ndingthe doy in senseless howling! und inareL
ings. Phil. Eichelborger and party hud provided
for the occasion, a band of music-three drums
and two fifers! Phil. Eichelberger and Realf
were the nagnates of the day. A meeting was
called in tie park. Phil, was made Chairman.
Mr. Leahcj, of Scott's constabulary force, rend
tho Declarttion. Realf spoke abundantly. He
inveighed very heavily against social equality
among whitts and blacks, and his speech, in tho
main, was seductively non-partisan. Kealf is cun
ning, and wants to make fair weather for himself.
But Realf won't do ; that's a clear case ! Prince
Rivers and alothcr negro spoke also. The negro
members of thc Legislature stood afar off, eschew
ing the procession, and not seeming to take pleas
ure in the dirtj proceedings. And strange to re
late, not only tau said Legislators eschewed the
procession, but alsu Eichelberger and Realf, and
tho few white men in our midrl of profettcd Re
publican sentiments. Not one of than marched,
leith the negroes, after the "oldflag" to do it rev
erence. No, not one ! What does this mean? Do
the negroes not notice tbut the men whom they
have elected to office in Edgefield District, avoid
their company, and take n apart in their demon
strations. How do they ac junt for the milk in
the cocoanut? I
Divers burly negro fellows, armed with huge
cudgels, acted as drill-ma .stets ; and' tbrooghout
the day, drilling was ooodtre-ted <*uu Wild delight.
jjEfle. whole thing was tu intensely disgusting and
nncivilizod demonstration. From starlight until
midnight, the foolish legrocs, inspired by Eichel
berger and Roalf, raged furiously together, and
imagining a vain thing. And thus it wa?, and
thus it ended.
Examination in the Colored. School.
On Saturday last, on examination took place
here in the colored school. The teachers in this
school are two colored men, Lawrence Cain ?nd
Robert Green. Their schcol ?3 largely attended
by both sexes, and seems to bc a useful and well
conducted institution. On Saturday last, their
scholars were bright, tidy, and well-behaved.
As regards their proficiency, as evinced in the
examination, it was decidedly admirnble. They
arc evidently well taught in their books and in
their manners. After thc examination, the pupil
and teachers enjoyed a hasdsome pic-nic in a*
neighboring grove.

Notwithstanding tho cxtrem? heat, the past
week bus been somewhat inore lively than usual.
We are living in eventful tim?c ami passively
await the coming of new sensations. The wise
man said " put not your trust in Prince*," and thia
truism ii exemplified daily. The latest ?aovo iii
tho Republican rank? is tho change of Collectors
at this port. Dr. A. 0. MACKAY, who was sup,
posed to be a tower of strength, and a bright and
shining original Unionist, has been supplanted by
Geo. W. Clark our Ex-mHitary Mayor. Tho lat
ter drifted South as a sutler, and after tho war,
established himself in business in this city. Ile
was strongly supported by the white citizens in
the contest with Pillsbury for the Mayoralty.
This brought him into disfavor with the Republi
can party, and his appointment to thc Collector's
berth took many by surprise. His influence at
Washington was not believed to bo great, but he
had an able coadjutor, and firm friend in the per
son of Tim Hurley. Now, who is Hurley, know
oth no man. A waif of the war, ho worked bis
way into thc Convention, and warmly supported
Mackay for President, which was rewarded by
his being almost the only man of note in that
body not placed on some Committee. This was
considered somewhat humiliating, and Tim be
came, from that moment, the active encmv of ?>.?

The split in thc Republican party has apparontly
been healed, and thc lion and the lamb have laid
down together. Pillsbury and Mackey are now
pulling in the same traces, and there is a fuir pros
pect of some pretension to a municipal govern
ment. The scramblo for offices which has been
long delayed will soon take place, ana the distri
bution of the spoils will soothe all contentions.
The recent announcement that thc interest due on
City Stock would bo paid this month has created
a better f soling, and ic is now firm at 62, a con
siderable appreciation on its value when Pillsbury
took his seat. Thc celebration of the approach
ing Fourth or rather Pifth is engrossing tho at
tention of the Party. From the experience of
the post, it will be a grand fizzle, as none but.thc
b'licks, and a few degraded whito men will par
ticipate in the august ceremonies.
The State Court now in session has decided
some important cases during thc past week. Mr.
Jacob Barrett, the owner of the French Coffee
House, (now the ATcics office) sued Mr. P. J. Ooo
gan, tho lessee, for $7,000 rent duo during the
war, when the building was unteunblo on account
of the bombardment. It seems like a hard case
that ti lessee should be compelled to ray for what
it ie impossible for bim to use. Tho French Cof
feo House was on thc lower part cf East Bay in
the shelled district. No one lived there, and few
ventured to extend their walks in that direction.
Coogan could not usc the property, but ho was
unfortunately bound by a lease, and the Judge
charged the jury that some one must lose, either
tho owner or the lessee, und they returned a ver
dict against Coogan. Another and more in
I tercstiug case was when Mr. W. Lawton sued
Mr. John S. Ryan, an ex-Cou federate Cap
tain and Commissary for damages done to his
property on James Island, when used by,
the latter as a commissary depot. He placed hu
damage at $5,000, and spoke of the cedar and,'
.?range graves ruthlessly destroyed. -- *

is still in session, and under the new judicial

Although Charleston Is one of thc most quiet
cities in the union, we ore not without our celeb
rities. The boarders of tho Charleston Hotel were
somewhat surprised last Tinter at the advent of a
humpback who wore long hair, tucked up with a
comb, and was in every respect ono of the oddest
specimen* Cf ?iuekoity over seen iu this section

one, and was a Diogenes wii-hout a tub. Madam
Humor was at lait aroused, and reports were cir
culated of his enormous wealth, bow be owned a

with greenbacks, and, though a &yc!ea ha3 been
known to spend them most generously. All that
is knowu of the strange creature is that his miine

him to the new world is not kuowp, butbujsolici

State. His first appearance was at Camden,
where be astonished the natives by dressing a la
Turk, shooting pistol--', and performing sundry
uncivilized antics. The landlord of thc Camden
Hotel, having pressed bim for bis bill, he became
offended, went to Charleston, raised some money,
and returning to Camden, bought the Hotel from
over the landlord's head, and ejected him. This
is the only Investment tifi is known to bavo made,
and ho invariably turns a deaf oar on all who
seek to divert his greenbacks into specHlation.
He does not seem to mind the hot weather, and
can be seen n,ty aftprnoon on tho Hotel porch
with his bunds in bis pr?0c)}ca pockets, und bis

a god-sei(d for torne enterprising showman, and
it is a wonder that somo gliii-toiigucd Yankee btu

js a mystery none who have seen him can doubt,

Tho wp titer for the past few duys has jieuu al
most unendurable, ty ith a clear sky, a hot sun,

is at a discount. We can only endure, aud suffer,
trusting to the coming of cooler days.
Our Opera House project bus fallen to the
ground from the unwillingness, or inability, of
tho Charestonians to contribute their quota to
its erection.
The town talk is now tho Reading Room and
Merchant's Exchange proposed by the Board of
Trade. The necessary collections have been made,
and thc enterprise may be considered a certain
success. Tho site bas not b*cu determined upon,
but it is thought that tho Mowry IIouso, in Moot
ing Street, a short distance above the Pavillion
Hotel, will be purchased, and transformed to suit
the purposes intended.
The Bocotitl number of thc " Nineteenth Centu
ry" has been issued, and favorably received. It
it somewhat on tho same stylo as the June number,
h iving an abuudance of light and heavy reading,
learned saws from the Sanscrit, and pleasant his
torical incidents of tho lost cause. Tbe sooty
graphs aro Cicellsnt, and 113 Ibero il a vein of
humor and truth underlying them, they viii bp
generally appreciated. Those In the June num
ber have been copiod in many of ibo Wostern
papers. It is up bili work to run n magazine in
Charleston, and the publishers oT the " Nineteenth
Pejitjtrv'-' deserve all the succ?s they may achieve.
