In compliance with the call of General
Wade Hampton, the Chairman of the State
Democratic Executive Committee, a Conven
tion, of the Democratic Party of this Slate
met in Columbia on Thursday night, at thc
Democratic Headquarters, (Carolina Hall,) at
.8 o'clock, P. A.
On motion of General Hampton, Ex-Gov
. crnor Milledge L. Bonham; uf ?dgefield, was
called to the Chair, and Mr. F. G. DeFon
taine, requested to'act as Secretary.
On assuming the Chair Governor Bonham
was.greeted -with applause at.d said :
Gentlemen;-I thank you from the bottom
of my heart for *.be compliment, .you have
paid me by placing me in the position of te-i.
porary Chairman. It is not my intentiou to
make a speech, but simply to aunour.ce in ac
cepting the position, what I trust every o? e
will realize-that we are iu thc midst of the
greatest political revolution in thc history of
this country. Although the calTfor this Con
vention has beeu short, I congratulate you
upon tile lact. that the attendance ii so large,
particularly as our deliberations may be at
tended with the most important results.
It is essential that we should act with calm
ness, consideration and fiiinness, io order to
conduct this summer's campaign toa success
ful fruition, and if we do our part as well as
I. a'm confident the Democracy ot the North
will do, no one can doubt the election o? Sey
mour aud Blair. [Applause.]
Let us do our part iaithlully. It is true
that the future is uncertain, and that we do
not now kuow even whether our votes will be
counted, but irom the information 1 have re
ceived from the North I believe that Seymour
?nd Blair will bc the next President, and Vice
President of the United States. To this end
let us contribute our part and whoa we have
done our duty we will have no cause of regret.

passion" and prejudices, have rai-ed their
voices in behalf of our insulted and outraged
section.

canciiS as may occur by death, resignation or
otherwise, in ihe ticket cf ihe Electors for
President and Vicc-Presideut of the United
States, or take such action as they may find
proper to the success of the Democratic ticket.
During the session General Wade Hamp
ton made a speech, in which he emphatically
denied making any speech about unfurling
thc old flag as represented in the Northern
press, and said that all he desired was to en
sure the success of the Democratic, party by
peaceful means alone.
The Convention adjourned at ten o'clock,
