The New York Democratic Convention. * NEW YORK, Joly 4. The Convention organized to-day with im mense enthusiasm. The Convention was called to order at twenty minutes past twelve o'clock by August Belmont, Chairman of"the National Demo cratic Committee. After saying the country looks to you, gen tlemen, by means of th? Democratic organi zation to save the co on try, Belmont nomi nated HenryS. Palmer, ot Wisconsin, tem porary Chairman. The nomination was con finned. Mr. Palmer's speech was received with the greatest enthusiasm. Everything augurs harmony and success. The illinois and Indiana Delegations an nounced that they were instructed to vote for Pendleton as a unit, which was received with applause. The contest DOW seems to be between Pen dleton and Hendricks with the chances in fa vor of Pendleton. The New York Delegation say that they will support the candidate having the majori ty on the sixth ballot Andrew Johnson will receive a large vote from the South. The Southern vote will probably be divided between Andrew Johnson and Francie P. Blair. Lr "isiana supports Hancock. The ocu'hern vote will be given for the candidate showing the greatest strength by the greatest majority. Judge Chase abides by the decision of the Convention. His friends say he will show strong on the 6th ballot. Bets three to one that the Democratic nominee will be elected. Over two hundred thousand strangers are io the city. Pendleton's escott from Cincinnati is two thousand. Chase Delegation from Philadelphia is one thousand. Thomas H. Seymour, of Connecticut, has declared for Pendleton. The Georgia Delegation entered, moved in procession from their headquarters to Tam many Hall, General Gordon, Chairman, lead ing the procession, the band playing Dixie as the Delegation entered the Hall. ? The new Tammany hall is admirably ar ranged for the Convention, and elegantly fes tooned with large American nags, and deco rated with.elaborately painted escutcheons of ail the States. The accommodations, for Del egates is ample. Among the spectators are many ladioj, also Francis JB. Blair, Senator Paterson, Ex-Sena tor Bayard and many men prominent in Southern politics before the war. ?The crowd in the vicinity of Tammany Hall render the. streets almost impassible. Over fifty thousand applications have been made for admission to the Convention. Pen dleton's forces preserve their enthusiasm and ' confidence. Johnson men are few in number, but very determined. Hancock's supporters seem in bad temper. Bumors of a Chase letter bearing strongly on Stale rights excite attention. Southern delegates applaud John son for his amnesty proclamation enthusiasti cally. -r Bules of the Democratic Convention of '64 were adopted. Territories were excluded from a vote in the Convention. Committees on credentials, resolutions and permanent or ganization were appointed, 1 vheu, after read ing the Declaration of Independence, the Convention adjourned until Monday 10 o'clock. General Met 'ernand, of Illinois, is tempo rary Chairman of the Soldiers and Sailors' Convention. He welcomed all true soldiers North and South. Resolution! were proposed declaring the Convention merely auxiliary to the National Democratic Convention. Gen. W. B. Frankliu, of Connecticut, is nominated for President of tho Convention. THE IMPEACHMENT INVESTIGATION.-The managers report of the impeachment investi gation has been nearly completed by Genera! Butler, and will be presented to the House on Wednesday. In the testimony to be pre seated the report gives a detailed account'of a conveisation which took place at the White House between the Pr?sideut aud his Cabinet officers before the final vote on impeachment was taken, when the subject uf gaining Re publican senators was considered. The Pres ident, it is stated, named those whom he be lieved could be induced to vote for his ac quittal. It appears that there was a diversity of opinion in regard to the position of Sena tor Wilson, but the President said he was firm in the belief that it would be useless to attempt to secure his vote. . The managers endeavor to keep all the evidence obtained by them very clo*e. bat the above "is consid ered authentic.-Washington Star. -? ? ? THE SOUTHERN DELEGATES.-As some of the Southern delegates, prominent in the Con federate military service, are concerned as to their reception in the Convention, it is proper to say that they will be regarded as they ap pear, without reference to the past. The Democratic party will do all they can to make the Convention harmonious. If General For rest and General Wade Hampton appear in the places assigned to them, the Convention will receive them as delegates, and show them the same courtesy and respect shown to dele gates from any Northern State. The Repub licans-who received Ex-Governor Brown, of Georgia, a chief nullifier and secessionist, into their own Convention-can hardly make any capital ont of this.-N. Y. Express. RAPE.-Derrick, a copper-colored negro, living in Hope-veil neighborhood, committed rape on his own daughter, a week or so Bince. He beat ber very crael'y sev?ral times b?fore he succeeded. He is now out, avoiding jar rest, and we learn that there is considerable excitement in the neighborhood from the fear many entertain of him. He is about forty years of age, copper-colored, very powerful and a daring villain. On yesterday, a party was in pursuit of Jlim, but we hare not yet hears whether they succeeded io capturing him.-Charlotte Times. - fi?t" Locusts ia Southern Illinois ar? so thick a? to ii y by myriads into the oar windows, and the air is filled with them. ?lf Lieutenant-Colonel P. Martin, United State? army, Uwt a considerable amount at faro, in Savannah .recently, and. thereupon, bad the banker arrested and confined in the barracks. The prisoner's counsel- was denied admirion. The counsel then sued out a warrant to urrcV the Colonel on a charge of playing au J betting at taro, but the military refused to allow the civil authorities to arrest the o liker. The prisoner was afterwards taken, under guard, ta consult bis counsel. Louis Lane, a colored man at Pittsburg, Pa., bas juet be?n convicted of poisoning bi: fourth wife, and it is now found that he served the other three the same way. Masonic Notice.
