OBITUARY.
In memoriam.
- Died of Congestion -of the Lungs,-at Liberty
Hill, Edgefield District, So.'Ca., on the 27tb
Apiil lS66,NRcv. ARTHUR WIG FALL,, aged
fifty-eight years.
His ancestor?, fleeing from political persecution
in their own country, settled in Charleston, So.
Ca. ; and there in 'fradd Stroet, on the 21st of
ApriMSOS, wa3 born the subject of this brief and
unworthy notice.
Wheu ho was but six years of ago, his parents
. removed to tho up-country,.and found a beautiful
home on Cheves' Crock in Edgefield District.
Hew, ABTBTUB WIGFALX. was nurtured midst tho
purity and.Simplicity of. country lifo. Tho influ
ence of tho elevated virtues and refined graces
which distinguished this, hospitable home, at
tended him ever through lifo, and clothed his
manhood and ngo with honor, honesty, and un
suspecting faith in his fellow mon.
He was graduated at the Virginia University,
where his high order, of ability, and his literary
attainments, gave him an enviable rank.. Shortly
after his graduation, ho wiSWtaitted to the prac
tice of law and equity in thi* Stato. He regarded
his profession, however, neither as a stepping
stone to political distinction, nor a ladder to am
bitious preferment; but viewed it rather ns thc
protector of tho weak, and the shield of the op
pressed; insomuch that in tho practice thereof,
he looked only to the naked majesty of the law?
" In tho Spring of USS, an only Sister, then IN
ext remit, summoned him to her bedside to "ste
how a Christian contd die :" an? or.tof this.cham
ber of triumphant death, he went forth a changed
and wiser man. And from that hour, all who saw
him might havo said, " I knew a man in Christ."
He was invented with the orders of tbeministry
of the Protestant Episcopal Church in lSSilj and
thenceforth with meek and unaffected grace, he
followed in the footsteps of his Lord'and Master.
And not only with lowliness and grace, but also
with power, might and inflaence. For twenty
seven years, ho was a soldier no less than a priost,
doing famous battle for the faith, however humble
in the spirit. And at tho ondw these twenty-seven
years, ho died in the harness! His li'c was ever
ono of charity, blend 2d with strength and dignity.
Tho vices of thc wickod were forgotten in their
woes, and his words of comfort and cheer fell nat
urally and soothingly by tho bed of sorrow, guilt,
or pain. - "JIo prayeth well-wholoveth well," and
so this good man, both by precept and example,
watching, weopingir-nd praying for all, not only
" allured to brighter worlds, but lcd the way."
Af.or entering upon tho ministry of Christ, he.
. . quitted Edgefield, and lived for fifteen years in
Clarendon, Sumter District, as Parish Priest, and
Rector of St Mark's Church. The latter years
of hil lifo wero spent at Grahamville, Beaufort
District, os Parish Priest, and t?cete; ol' tho
Church of. tho Holy Trinity. The sheep of his
flocks arc scattered by the woes and disasters of
War, but from far and near they send? their tearful
cries of undying lovo and honor. They weep for
tho loss thoy have sustained, hut of their guide
and shepherd, gone before, they exclaim, " Ho
couldread his titlo clear." "Heis forever blessed,"
As in old days, bis ancestors had fled from per- ?
aecutian, so in latter days, be was himself forced
to floe-with tho loss of all worldly goods-the
wrath of an invading enemy. A lurking but fatal
disease had long ago fastened.upon .him, and,
wofully oppressed by the defeat of his country
with Jiie iron in his soul-bo returned to 'die in
sight of thc placo which had known und nurtured
bis boyhood, and amid thc loved scenes of his
early years.
Those who had kno:vn him in brighter dovs,
gave bim a'hearty welcome.
In all his wanderings through this world of
care, in all his griefs-and God bud given him his
share-he proved hinisolf " homo /ttcim uti -wi
ijitt m," and when we add,et ChrtttiuHut, thc meas
ure of mafl ,is complete..
For twenty-seven years, this righteous man, in
sunshino and in shadow, in prosperity and in ad
versity, entered thrice a day into his closet, with
tho toncking prayer upon his lips, "Our Father
who art in Heaven :" and on that last day of sick
ness und piiin, when thc accustomed hour ol
prayer came round, and bi.x lips whispered, lowly '
but audibly, "Thy will bo done," it Kat done!
And he who had murmured so often iu his illness,
"Her ways are ways of pleasantness aud all her
paths are peace," departod tobo forever, among
those pleasant ways, and to- wander throughout j
all eternity along thos?. peaceful paths. Thc lor- !
ing ones who ' sit by' him, saw tho mild angelic '
air that settled upon his face; and when at ll '
o'clock; the light foll on his brow, it was the light !
ft om Heaven.
.. Departed was that g?c;l man's life ;
God's blessing on hi.? soul!"
